USPPA Reno players, did they get paid?

Recently, I have been doing some research on mythology for a work-related project in an attempt to get the correct spellings, and I came across a "Griffin." A Griffin is a Greek legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the Griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature.

Here is the coat of arms for the House of Griffin. The Griffin also happens to be my Irish coat of arms, as depicted in my avatar.

Griffins are cool!

JAM,

Thank you for your kind words - to me and about Lyn.

And a brief history on Griffin - a mythical creature. Mark is really proud of his family crest and he too says, "Griffins are cool".

I would think at this point one of those who are owed money would be making a direct call to him. And maybe then we'll have something for news that means something.

like I said before as of yesterday, I talked to someone in the top 3 and they were not payed yet.
They didn't mention anything about plans.

Lyn,

Thank you seeing it from my point of view. Although you may have written your reply with different intention it had come across to readers with different interpretation.

Your apology to me isn't necessary - but I do appreciate it.

Thanks and hope to chat with you in Vegas.

S.

Sunny,

Just the fact you were offended means an apology was necessary. I've valued Mark's friendship since I first meet him in Vegas. Hope to value yours as much. See you next Wednesday or Thursday. Know Glenna likes Iced Chai Tea. What's your favorite?

Ain't What It Used To Be

hello all. im new to azbilliards but i have been wonderin about the usppa payouts also. i reside in marysville ca and i work and play out of a local pool hall there where we are startin up the usppa. was wonderin if im gettin into somethin i probably shouldnt be. please let me know everyone. thanks

I remember going to the earlier USPPA Reno events and how incredibly exciting it was to be able to play with the Pros in a handicapped event and then afterward watch and later play in the Open. Check out this link for the 5th Sands Regency event in June 1987 (23 years ago):

A friend of mine was a 37 rating and had to play Allan Hopkins; Allan had to give up 5 games to 8; my friend won the break and snapped in the 9, then broke again and played a combo 9 in on his 2nd shot which put him on the hill. He still lost the match, but the excitement was incredible. I remember seeing EZ Wadsworth having to spot a 12 yr old girl 5 to 8 and how the crowd did everything they could to help her win - EZ Won. And the guy from LAX that use to yell out Hubba Hubba. And, Bucktooth coming in with a briefcase of CASH wanting to bet ANYONE! It used to be exciting to do the Reno events.

What happened to all of that? Why did that go away? When did it go away? Why did many of the Pros stop coming to the Reno events?

Too bad because it was so cool!

Of course, now that I've been to Derby City (17 days and counting), that's even better for the Pros and action. But, it would be nice to have something BIG again closer. Something you can have TRUST in.

I would wait until this all plays out before making a decision. The USPPA system has been around for along time and great for developing players skills.

I know and have been friends with the players and Tony for a long time and believe as the winner of the tournament does, it will be settled soon.

I don't want to put you on the spot here, because I know you have nothing to do with this situation, but since last week's promised deadline was obviously missed, I wish someone who knows Tony would find out what's holding up the payout and what the chances are of the players receiving their money in say, the next 30 to 60 days.

Dead silence is the worst thing in this situation, but it's also the clearest explanation that the answer is not a positive one..

My assumption is there are cash flow issues - but if so, where is the cash held up and when, if ever, is it expected.

In other words, is the money coming, or is it just spent? Is USPPA planning on continuing their operations without paying the prize fund? Is it going to close up? Is it going to continue operations and tournaments with hopes to re-pay the prizes in the future?

A reasonable explanation fgrom USPPA top management, no matter how bad the news, is the responsible thing to do here. I have had to deal with many negative issues in my business career and never once did it occur to me to hide from the public or my customers with no explanation. I have had to explain some very nasty things in the past and have found that people are generous, compassionate and forgiving when they know you are telling the truth and doing the best you can, but the same folks can be downright mean when lied to and avoided.

Maybe Helfert can explain, how he was the TD at the last tourney that destroyed the mens pool tour and ended the Upa in Arizona, when he guaranteed the money, and the entire tour got siffed and not paid. How about he explains this, his envolment in this this, and why this happens.

Watch him run like a jack rabbit on this one, and wiggle like a worm..

Watch this one, every one, points the finger at the other one, nobody did nothing wrong, right.

John is always the voice of reason, and then there's Kentucky :D;). Happy New Year, John & Bill.

Dave

Where Kentucky? There Kentucky! This may be my last Derby. I hope to see you there. My back has never gotten much better and even with huge spots, I can't get it done anymore. Happy Festivus and have a great Year 2011.

The Derby can't come soon enough. But this year LuLu is NOT invited to go to dinner with us in L. There is a great place I used to go too in the old days, Cunninghams, and I heard they moved down to the mall downtown. If you insist Lulu goes then he will have to agree to Mum dinner. It's like Mum pool, only if you lose at Mum dinner, that includes the tip.
Your tournament did real well at C B's. Why not get a 10 day event going out here? There are plenty of convention halls in the SJ Airport hotels. While you are at the Derby, talk it up and see what the response will be. The thing about
the Derby is, Louisville is so close to so many places. Chicago, NY, Nashville, Atlanta, NO. In four hours driving you can be there from a lot of states. Having
it in San Jose has one great advantage over Indiana, no grits with your
coffee.:grin-devilish::grin-devilish:

Now here's an intelligent post by someone who is obviously well informed. Definitely a candidate for the Jerry Springer show.
Wonder what other great conspiracies he can enlighten us on? Perhaps he can tell us how 9/11 was a CIA conspiracy or maybe how the Moon landing was faked. This is a man in the know! :kma:

Sad to say Chris, just one more black mark for pool.

I have never seen you right so many words at one time!!!!!!!! Must be feeling good tonight. Bobby is in town, lets get Al to step up and play that 10/6 $5000 game he thought he liked.

I would much rather play pool, have fun and let someone else handle all the planning and promoting of pool tournaments. The only reason why I started doing tournaments was because I missed what we once had going in Reno and I didn't see anything else on the horizon. There was just this big void. Al (lulu) felt the same way and offered to help; and, things just sort of fell in place. In just a year, nearly 500 other pool players also agree; many of these players are brand new to 9ball, some left years ago frustrated and now see new possibilities and are excited.

I welcome, with open arms, the opportunity to help anyone credible, responsible and able to listen as well as talk about possibilities of having handicapped and Open Reno/Las Vegas tournaments, like before...
The players in this region deserve a nice bigger tournament where they can experience the camaraderie of friends getting together year after year and having fun.

Gee Rory,

Are you referring to the event in Phoenix where the promoter abscounded with the proceeds of the event? Perhaps its the same one where the TD didn't get paid? Or the one where Mark Griffin stepped in and made sure the players got at least some of the money owed? The UPA? You're joking right? Perhaps it is you who need to explain where your information comes from. Lets see. Jay Helfert / rorywayne. Jay helfert / rorywayne. Sorry, in my view the balance goes to Jay everytime till YOU can show otherwise:angry:.

You have obviously never seen the majestic Griffin in flight. Statues don't do them justice. They can look at heighrts beyond our gaze with a spirit that can soar. I think they are quite beautiful!

BTW I am known as the biggest mouth, snark, snark, not the most prolific writer. I did offer to take Lulu to dinner this year in L if he ate mum dinner. Last year we went to a Bar B Que joint on Bardstown road. This year I have plans to go to Illinois and Lexington and to eat lots of Hot Browns. Then at 11pm each night, the ice cream joint at the entrance to the tournament site. Other than that, I'll just be playing one pocket 24/7. Say, is that a bulge in your pocket or do you want to play some one hole?

Big Black Mark

Sad to say Chris, just one more black mark for pool.

It is definitely a big black mark but considering the same party in question had some questionable things happen at the end of the Cue Club reign in SF it isnt really surprising is it?

Sticky ?

Maybe this should be a "Sticky Note", at least until payment or some sort of response is officially received? Once there's a resolution it can be removed....

I agree.....this thread reminds me of the marathon thread about the IPT not paying on time (so long ago)........I would like to see everyone get paid and have some closure to this debacle......Obviously, some explanation should be given and even if one emerged, I think the USPPA might suffer for future credibility...
