Varner vs ?? All around.

I saw a thread talking about having Nick Varner play an all around on TAR against someone. Well Not sure if any of you remember but I was trying to get Scott Frost and him together for just such a match. In the other thread I saw alot of names that people had suggested some are possible and some are not. I had also mentioned this recently to Darren Appleton while on the road with him and Nick, I asked them what they thought of playing an all around against each other and Darren was pretty excited about it. He said he would love to see how he would do. We all agreed that some of the games would go to Nick and some would go to Darren. However both conceeded that winning any of the games could be hard.
Anyway, I am currently working on something to get the sponsorship for an all around match with Nick Vs ???? So my questions are A) Who (realistically) should we try to get as his opponent? and B) what games? below is my list of games.

0ne pocket

Straight pool

8-Ball

9 or 10 ball

Banks (I am not sure how popular this would be and so I have my concerns)

Not sure on what the races will be to but it will be a weekend event obviously. I would love to hear your thoughts.

How does Varner play these days? Are there recent videos of him around?

And maybe Buddy Hall for that matter? Those are two players along with Efren that I have never seen play in person that I really wanted to.

Varner vs one of the older guard may be a good match, Sigel, Hall, Rempe and such.

Nick can still play especially when you talk about games like Banks, 1 Snatch and 14.1. I have seen him recently win sets against very good players. Just like everyone though he can have his bad days but the knowledge and experience is something that will give alot of people a run for their money. I think the 9-ball would be his weakness but then again in an all around I would probably say that about anyone depending on the rules. As we all know 9-Ball can be a pick'em sometimes whoever he plays will be able to run out at any time.

I would love to see Nick play an all-around match. It's hard to pick an opponent without knowing how Nick is playing these days, I think he will be turning 65 in May.

I had the privilege of playing Nick Varner this last weekend in a team tournament and it was pretty sweet. We got crushed. lol. He is a super nice guy.

Efren is in the country..and he has mucho respect for Nicky.
They are both past their prime....
...but between them...they possess 97.08% of all billiard knowledge.

Remember that Nick went to the home of Efren and beat him in a long race...
...when they both played well...I can't think of any other American who did that.

Efren is very good idea , but I think Shannon Daulton or Jerremy Jones is closer than you might think.

Nick and johnny came to my home room about 8 months ago on their southern tour...i would definitely say hes still got it...he had to play in a caste due to an accident that had happened the previous day at his hotel...played lights out. If i had to guess i would say his accu stats rating would have been well over .900 through 22 racks

Nick Varner vs.

Archer (Nick would LOVE to get in one pocket game)
McCready (fan favorite)
Schmidt (Probably best all around excellent 14.1)
Harriman ( Strong in all games excellent 14.1)
Efren (best player I have ever seen...period)
Landon (fans really need to see how this youngster has progressed)

VOTES FOR NOT;

Earl - Ugh, he wears me out, tired of his $hit.
SVB - Over exposure, need a break.
Frost - One pocket specialist, and misses the point of an all around.

As far as games.

1.) One pocket
2.) 10 ball
3.) Banks
4.) 14.1 (would be nice as this is hardly EVER seen, and Nick was a WORLD CHAMPION, which is why I would think Schmidt or Harriman would make a great choice)

Best of rolls,

Ken Strain

Bfdlad , I met you and the guys at high pockets last year and really enjoyed it. Please ask Nick what he thinks about playing "Efrum" in all round (banks one hole and 14-1.

I'll sweat it...

Make it any three out of Straight Pool, Banks, 8-ball or One Pocket, and you can probably put up just about anyone you want and it'll be a good match.

This is from the 2009 Galveston World Classic 8-ball. A (then) 60 year old Nick Varner didn't fare too bad.

He beat Shawn Putnam, John Schmidt, Francisco Bustamante, Rodney Morris, Lee Van Corteza, and (I heard) put a 7-pack on Mitch Ellerman.

Hey Todd, I will ask him on Efren. Actually as someone else posted Nick has always done well against Efren and I believe has a winning record against him.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am just working on raising the funds to b e able to put this on. I don't need alot but we shall see once the $$ is there for the players who he will be playing and where. I have a couple of places in mind that I think would really enjoy seeing this live.

Seriously, he and Mike Sigel had one of the biggest rivalries pool has ever seen and seeing them do battle one last time in an all around format would be awesome. Sigel is one of the greatest all around players ever.
