Here is a recently completed cue for what is without doubt my finest customer I've ever had. Sir, I can't express enough how much I appreciate your patience...I told you I'd get it perfect. After several errors on near finished cues and a couple of start overs...here is the finshed cue. Everyone take note that this cue has metal ringwork & this will be the only Varney cue ever you see with this type of ringwork. :)

How come? Any reason?

I just prefer not to use these style metal rings. I've seen way too many cues...even those from master cuemakers, where the rings expand and damage the clearcoat. Therefore I'd rather not use them and take any chances. There is a reason you've never seen a SW with any metal.:wink:
This cue was promised with them so I guess this makes it truly a 1 of 1.

I'm the owner of this cue. Glad to see it's finally done, and I hope it hits as good as it looks in the pics (if not better)!

Yeah, watch out for those magically expanding metal rings!WTF

Nothing magic about it, its a commonly seen problem on even the finest of cues. Metal expands at a different rate than wood or phenolic which causes it to pop or lift the clear. Next time you see a cue with metal rings then run your finger over the rings...good chance you'll feel them sticking up. If they are then look close and you'll see the finish lifting with the ring...or even worse and maybe cracking around the ring. I would not have to walk far around a crowded poolroom to find a prime example. My buddy has a $2000 Nova cue that is absolutely horrid...and the Nova was an excellent made cue.

Very nice, thanks for sharing this unique Varney!
But sorry for a little kind of nit-picking: IMHO the slots of the back ring should face symmetrical to the other rings of the handle. Or is this beside the point...?

I always thought the issue with metal ring work was from the movement of the wood, expanding and contracting. I did not know that metal could move / expand... did I learn something today?

But I think we're getting a fruit salad of mixed properties;

metal moving from variation in temperature, and wood expanding or shrinking as it takes on or give up humidity.

That being said, a really nice looking, very "warm" cue.

:thumbup:
