i bought this cue without seeing it in person. when i finally got it in my hands it was beat up bad. the butt was 1.40 and just .86 near the joint end, so i decided to take a pass or 2 to see what i had. after the first pass i thought i had a winner. photos are at .84 and 1.26 with just a sealer, and i will ad black fiber rings and elk antler 1 1/4 inch at the joint end and 1 1/2 inch at the butt to get the length desired.
NOW for the big question what is the wood? i have cut many of these and never seen this much curl on a titlist.

Chuck,
Looks like curly walnut to me. When you cut it, what did it smell like? That is a nice surprise, especially if you couldn't see that curl before.

Hi,

I don't think this is a titelist. Look at the crotch area of the joinery. Brunswick came to a V like Burton Spain and Davis.

Nice cue though. Because it is big, you can take a few passes and make it new.

Very cool.

the wood was so dry it had no smell to me, and yes you could see nothing trough all the crud it had, but this cue has curl on every side from butt to the end of the points. its gonna make a nice conversion

Well walnut has a very distinct smell when you sand it and cut it. Same with cherry. Hard to describe unless you use a lot of it. Anyways, looks a like good piece with nice figuring.

Look, you got taken, it was not what you expected. I feel your pain. The only fair thing to do is send me the butt as is and I will mail you a check at a later date for 1/2 of what you paid. Than it will not sit there all ugly reminding you of your loss.

The other option would be for a 20" wrap, maybe a nice Nylon.

Almost looks like curly redwood. Not sure but it is really nice.

Very Good pics of all types of woods and their known figures

Hello everyone,
There are many posts and threads that ask what type of wood is seen in a picture of a cue, etc...

I am not a CM, but this is a very good resource for wood ID issues.

I have attached a link to a nice site that has very good information and thousands of pictures of most or all species of woods, their known aliases, and figure patterns, etcetera.
I thought that this site would assist folks in figuring out what types of wood they like when ordering a cue and also assist others in "unknown" ID's of a specific wood. I was going to post this as a reply in the "Ask the Cuemaker" section, but I thought it would be of more use here (and I am not making cues yet).

Regarding the OP and the response for Curly Bubinga, that looks like the same wood to me seen under "figured slabs" towards the lower third of the page seen here:

Thanks for reading,
Jeremy

I think we should all go out to the shop and take a picture of our curly redwood, maybe some quilted too, and some curly walnut and some figured bubinga. side by side, and then it should be easy to decide....

Post em up.

IMHO...

It is most def a Titlist - from the 60s - the 'Rear' points were blunt in them.

It is not Bubinga, nor is it Redwood or Walnut. My best guess..

Jatoba(Brazillian cherry)

YMMV

titlist for sure

The cue had wrap, right material, Willie Hopper signature, had to cut it to get the cue straight, and a Brunswick bumper. I have never seen a titlist with real sharp points in the back, most were like this cue.
