I was wondering about the pool and billiards in Virginia. Billiard rooms and tournaments. I am looking at a possible job in that area and would like to know about the area.

Hi bullshooter,

Depends on what part of the state you're talking about. I can tell you that Richmond VA has a pretty active pool culture, as John Schmidt mentioned (good to see you John!). We have 7 pool rooms (actual pool rooms - not just bars with tables) within about a 30 minute drive of each other, active APA and BCA/ACS leagues in many of them and the Richmond Pool Tour is a twice a month tournament program that works it's way around the city with 8 Ball, 9 Ball and I think he's getting ready to add 1 Pocket, too. The State 9 Ball Championships have been held here 5 years in a row as a qualifier to the US Open which is held in Chesapeake. We also hold the Richmond City Championships once a year and there's a 14.1 event in that one.

I grew up in Northern VA, just outside of DC, which is about 2 hours north of here. I know of at least 6 or 7 rooms up there, too. There's a regional tour that is primarily in the DC area and plays a number of events in the rooms in VA.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions and I'll do what I can to help. I've lived in the state for about 40 of my 51 years.

Anything near Roanoke? I may be moving there shortly.

Guys and Dolls on Williamson Road is the only place I know of to get action. And, it is the only pool hall. BTW, it is a REAL pool hall. No jupe box, no TVs, just the clacking of balls.

The old timers there play one pocket all day long. They have some old timers in there who have been working in pool halls for 50 years. They can really tell you some old timey stories.

The owner is John Joplin. He gambles on everything. Years and years ago I heard he missed a 2 foot putt on the 18th hole and that he shaved his head completely.

You will really like the place I believe.

Whatever happened to "Roanoke Red"? I met him when on the road in the '70s.

I decided to do a little search for his name. I am sad to report that he passed away January 2007: Lewis C. Terry, 72, of Roanoke, a local and nationally known Billiards player, also known as "Roanoke Red", died Sunday, January 14, 2007.

Q-Masters in Norfolk is probably my favorite Virginia pool room.

Up north in the D.C. area, I think First Break in Sterling, Virginia, may be a good pool player's room. It is action friendly too.

As said, depends on where in VA you are talking about.

We know all. Except where in VA you are talking about.
