Walnut

I've seen a few cues with beautiful, I mean gorgeous walnut wood used in the points or just as the entire forearm. Is walnut an expensive or difficult wood to use? If not any thoughts on why it isn't selected more often?

Some of the highest figure Walnut goes to stocks for rifles and shotguns, and the exhibition quality does command a premium price but in my experience it's not as expensive as many other exotic woods and burls.

Easy to work and smells great. Density is less than a lot of other hardwoods commonly used in cues. Some Titlist cues were made with it. I've used it in some cues over the years.

I've got some premium Curly Walnut that actually has a blue streak running through it. 3 full length solid butts worth of it in production. Because of the lesser density weight has to be added either by marrying it to heavier woods or adding a weight bolt. My experience, YMMV.

Walnut is a little prone to splitting, so I think after some forearm failures and the ease of getting Rosewoods that were prettier and more suited for cues, I think it just lost popularity. With the modern coring methods and the fact a lot of Rosewoods are no longer easy to import we might start seeing Walnut being used again more often.

I like walnut/black walnut especially fiddle-back. What you can't see in this picture is the chatoyance - it's easily as impressive as the maple. (Cue still needs final sanding)
The stuff I have is lighter than maple, so it needs cored, but it's gorgeous.

wood attacks toe

i'm looking for a piece of wood among one of the 1/2 dozen stacks of wood i have, and NOT paying attention, and going too fast, and not wearing shoes, this piece of granadillo, 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 by 18 inches, does a couple flips, and like something out of a road runner cartoon, slow motion, lands straight down on my big toe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

photo next morning, yes i do have a limp.

I have a 8 point with walnut in forearm and Butt sleeve . Going for stack leather wrap .

I like the look of walnut in a cue, but I really like the highly figured stuff...This is a cue I made to sell, but liked it too much and kept it. It's my daily player. It has a few battle scars Unfortunately and some finish lift (I no longer use that finish) Too bad the pictures don't catch the color well, or the shimmering effect that walnut has.

Beautiful. I especially like the match between the fiddleback in the walnut and maple.

Thank You Kindly.

The very first cue I made I cored a piece of claro walnut for the handle to go with marble wood. The 3d chatoyance is really sweet to the naked eye and hard to capture in photos.

JC #1 is my every day shooter. When I get rich and famous it will be in great demand:smile:

Thanks, Chris. Out of Tom Reed's shop, but not one of his TR Custom cues. I hang out there a lot and he let me piddle along and make it myself. I made him watch me pretty much every step so I didn't waste the wood-he was super patient! Both the walnut and maple were cut locally.
