Want Respect in Pool? Be a Man.

All those "why is pool this or that" threads. This is why. To most people perception becomes reality. This is a steaming pile of uselessness.

In that article in the OP it talks about the “gender pay gap” and laments the fact that “top male pros” made $84,*** and top women made $15,800 or similar. Well I think 1 top male named Shane May have made that number but either way were talking about pro pool here where you get paid based on results alone. Pool players don’t get a salary where some misogynist could decide to pay the women less. It’s all based on your performances.

^^^^^drops mic, walks off stage.

Emily hurt the game/sport that gave her a steady paycheck. Never bite the hand that feeds you. I lost most of the respect I had for her.
How so? I'm actually curious. I saw it by accident and I already said if those remarks were made to any lady playing in the South there would be a stern lecture in the parking lot.

I've never seen anything but respect to the gals.

I will say any of my players went up a ball if they were playing a lady. The ribbing if they lost to a gal was most entertaining!

Do folks still "rib" when you lose to a woman? Eh,, who cares. If they outplayed you, congratulate them and move on. And if you are the folks doing the ribbing, why? Is it beneath you to think a woman can play as good as you? Even for one measly game on a particular night? Eh, the horrors, the horrors. LOL

I'd rather lose to a woman who is at least a decent shot than some APA 3 who is a dude. AT least I didn't dog it ;)

I'm not sure how this is a response to my statement. I was not saying that these staged television performances highlight a problem with pool. I was commenting on how the idea of pool, which will never be seen as anything other than some glorified game of tiddlywinks to the general public, can easily and believably be used as fodder for the easily gullible, without any care for the damage done to the perception of that game. It is utterly meaningless to people. We are the only ones who actually care at all.

I'm glad we're finally talking about this. I think the show has gone completely ignored by the forum.
You were doing an ok job of giving us the synopsis. As soon as you went from Cliff's notes to your opinion things go awry.
"While some might argue this is the standard jeering and one-upmanship in a sport heavy on braggadocio, pomposity, and intimidation"
Really dude? Making a "rack" comment is standard? I can assure you, it is not. So while you maybe drinking this BS Kool-Aid this program served you, real pool players aren't buying it.

Maybe it was just unwatched because it was uninteresting and not so much ignored.
I think that for many members here, if there is a show about pool, then the game needs
to be the main focus, not an aside to what goes on in a bar. We all pretty much know that

Wrong! There are a lot of people - millions, that play rec pool, if I was a woman and saw this shit show I would never go to a poolroom and just keep playing in the crappy bars.

What woman would go to a poolroom if this is actually how they act? Zero

That means less date nights etc. Let's face it, it's not "us" who keep poolroom open, it's the rec players.

Quit putting this shit on TV

What’s that quote from “The Hustler” I’m thinking of... oh yeah:

Bert Gordon: Look, you wanna hustle pool, don't you? This game isn't like football. Nobody pays you for yardage. When you hustle you keep score real simple. The end of the game you count up your money. That's how you find out who's best. That's the only way.

Pool has paid very few people in the US well in the past 3 decades. It doesn't generate money so the payday opportunities for players are limited. Women's pool generates even less overall so the pay is going to be less. It's really not that complicated unless you decide you want to spin it as a discrimination, sexist or conspiracy issue.

If you want your children to get rich then tell them to focus obsessively on golf, baseball, basketball, football, video gaming, or rapping. Maybe some math and science as a backup plan is a good idea too.

Pool is what it is and it's not likely to change any time soon. If it's your dream to get rich at it, well there are zero signs out there telling you thats even remotely likely. Don't blame the zebra for having stripes.

I sometimes grab the last thing said as a quote more out of habit ;) and since I was at work it can often take 15 minutes to finish my post lol.

I was in no way whining about gender inequality or problems with pool, just summarizing a bit of the idiocy (sorry op dude) in that article. I don’t have any delusions of pool getting big again but I’d also (along with you) rather not have people trashing it and making it harder for us to recruit, especially pretty women.

Did I read she's a professional? How is that determined?

Because in pool all you have to do is pony up the entry fee to be in a pro tournament and your a pro.

She’s a really nice women and her personality is great for the women’s game but when I first saw her play it was obvious how she got sponsors. She beautiful and looks great in yoga pants because she had the same chance of beating the top women as an Apa 3 does. To her credit she has worked hard over the years to get her game to the same level as what she’s calling herself.

As for the show I have 0 interest in that channel or the crap they put on it.

LOL no shit, right?

I know a guy who has a facebook page, pretty much calling himself a pro. He somehow conned a cuemaker into being his 'sponsor', and he goes and donates to high level tournaments as often as he can.

At my top gear (which I havent been at for 6-7 years) I was playing around 625-650ish fargo.

The last time I played the guy was a handicapped tournament, I had to play him 6-2.

I beat him 6-0.

He aint no pro.

You want to know what sexism in pool REALLY looks like? Donny Mills coming back for seconds against Siming Chen, and the dudes on here insisting she's not REALLY a 790 Fargorate, because.... And then they invent every reason in the book. But I never heard a woman explicitly belittled at the table.

agreed. this is a much better example of sexism than that show can ever hope to be.

I'm not sure how what your saying is an argument against what I'm saying. There is nothing wrong with anything I said. There are tons of rec players playing, but most of them don't actually care about pool as anything other than that game they play whilst drinking beers with friends.

To be certain, I think this show is a steaming heap of garbage and doesn't reflect any typical real world scenarios. I fully agree that putting this crap out there will influence people who don't know any better. That is why they put it on in the first place, they are pandering plain and simple.

Pool is easy pickings. A long as they keep using it to highlight the ills of society, without anyone offering it up in a positive light it will continue to be.

And actually, although not for the same events, some of the top women's earnings have been as high as the top men from time to time.

Siming Chen is sitting at 47k and is in the top ten right now for 2019. And that is the real problem. The pros, in general, are not earning that much compared to the amount of travel they have to do for the money.

It is very important to note that the female players are not ALLOWED to play in a lot of the same events as the men so the performance vs. pay topic is skewed. And conversely, men are not allowed to play in any women-only events.

Pool is a sport that should be 100% genderless. There is no physical reason why a woman cannot perform as well as a man in pool that I can see.

I feel that at this point having separate events is holding them back. Maybe it's too early though. Maybe we need another 5-10 years to get more women in the top 100 in the world in order to finally say let's treat them as humans regardless of gender and have all tournaments be open to all genders.

I've been saying this for about five years now. There are at least a dozen women who can play with the top men in a tournament format and have a good chance to win matches, right now! My opinion is that if Pool is ever to gain the attention of a wider audience then this is the way to do it. Maybe start with a 32 player Invitational and invite sixteen women and sixteen men to compete, matching up a man and a woman in all sixteen first round matches. Let's see how far a woman can go in a field like this. When there are women who can progress through a field like this and maybe win a few matches (possible right now!) then it becomes very interesting from a television perspective.

There is no sport doing anything like this today! There is one pro golf tournament at the end of the year where PGA pros play alongside Senior and Women pros, but they are handicapped off the tee on every hole, so they are not really playing even.

The bitter truth is that the majority of women pool players are not competitive against an open (read: male) field.

There is the occasional outlier, like Balukas, but otherwise, most of them cannot get there, whatever the reasons.

Sorry, man, but...... I haven't seen the episode yet, and your review made me especially never want to see it. You treated it as if this were some sort of REAL thing that happened, and it was all just pure hokum. I have played pool since around 1993, and never saw a woman treated in the way described in your review, but yet... You took the show somewhat seriously????

You want to know what sexism in pool REALLY looks like? Donny Mills coming back for seconds against Siming Chen, and the dudes on here insisting she's not REALLY a 790 Fargorate, because.... And then they invent every reason in the book. But I never heard a woman explicitly belittled at the table.

That's about as far as sexism in pool goes, and that show probably hurt our efforts to integrate more women in pool, quite frankly, and you never even touched on that.

I 100% think she plays exactly like a 790 Fargo. I have no clue what makes you think this. After playing her 3 sets I watched her play a lot. I’m convinced her 790ish Fargo is accurate.

I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time...but....if there was only truly "open", genderless, pool events that, IMO, would be, for all practical purposes, the end of women's pro pool. Except for an isolated case, they would barely cash enough to cover their entry and eventually they'd all become league players. I don't know the cause, but I've seen it, except for the isolated case, they come up short.
