Want to start making some cues

Alright so don't flame me too badly but what is the overall start up cost for beginner equipment to make some pool cues? I have been thinking of setting up a shop in my garage and wanted to know if it is realistic for me.
 
It all depends on how deep you want to get!!
I think realistically you can drop between 10-40k ( depends on equipment and wood stock )
 
I think CueJo is being kind. It will suck you dry the first year or two. Best of luck if you are prepared for it. Please keep my ID handy if you start and did not believe us, always looking for wood and equipment.
 
Another thing,
I think it's a great start to do repairs
For me.....
Repairs is profitable, building is........fun :)
 
If you start with the bare necessities, you *might* get by only spending about $5,000. Maybe. But you'll undoubtedly get sucked in like the rest of us! :)

Talk with Chris Hightower. He can get you started in the right direction, tell you want you *have* to have, what you *might* want, what you can wait to buy a little later, and what you don't need.

Welcome to the addiction, and no there is no cure, just saying. You might want to start with repairs then build it gives you a base to grow from. IMO

Some where between $10,000 and $20,000 will get you are started buying equipment and materials. It could cost less or more based upon doing some research and based upon the time you take to do it.

Cue making is not cheap, almost every cue maker to a single man bought things they did not need when they started building cues.

I know I bought about 3k worth of stuff I didn't need in the end. If you can get a used cue building lathe or even a new one you can put together a cue for around 3-4k. Now its not going to be anything fancy but it will be a cue none the less. You just need to know where you want to take it in the end.

If moneys going to be a big deal though you just might wanna hold off till you have more available to you.
 
I'm over $10k invested so far and I've made about $700. Lol. I have lots of cues in progress and at different stages, so I know I will eventually make most of my money back, but it never fails, I always end up "needing" something else. More wood, new tools, a new machine, etc. If I were you, I'd start with a Chris High tower Deluxe lathe. His lathes are proven and well tested. There are many guys on here that use his lathes, and after using my friends a while back, I see why. Not all taig lathes are the same, by no stretch of the imagination. The price might seem high, but really, for what it can do, its well worth the money. $5000 should get you started and going. I'm a rookie at this, but I've got enough wood to last me a couple years. Lol.
