Wednesday Open Thread: Efren v. Jose. Who do you like?

Efren breaks the same cut break and pockets a ball. He has a tough leave and asks for an extension. Not sure what to do. He banks the 1 ball to snooker Jose, leaving the 1 ball down table on the cushion.

Jose evaluating the table. Doesn't see much here. Looks like there will be a cat-and-mouse game here.

He leaves Efren a shot on the 1-ball, lot of green, though, and Efren dogged it.

Jose can't get to the table fast enough for the 2-cushion kick. Oh, man, Jose scratches. Oh, no!

Efren gets ball in hand. BIG ERROR by Jose. Efren looking at an open layout. this is what Efren is all about. He's been doing this for years. Hitting balls in the heart of the pockets. Good speed, good position, good run-out. Efren takes a 2-game lead, 4 to 2.

Efren breaks dry. Jose pushes out, leaving Efren long and dirty on the 1 ball in the opposite corner pocket.

Efren goes for it, and now Efren scratches.

Jose finally gets a decent roll. Jose pockets the 1 and leaves himself horrible on the 2. He can see it, though. So it leaves Efren, once again, long and dirty on the 2. Efren can see the 2, though. Efren counters with a snooker for Jose, leaving the 2 on the end rail.

Jose can't see the 2. He kicks at it and makes it, leaving Efren straight in. Jose returns to his chair shaking his head.

Here comes Efren. Bada Bing, Bada Bing. Efren in the driver's seat and is now in turbocharge. Oh, man, he hit the 5 ball a little heavy and left it in the jaws of the pocket. He used bottom draw instead of bottom left, and that could have been what caused him to miss it.

Jose relaxed as can be, just strolls to the table, rolls the balls ever so softly. Jose makes the 9, closes the gap. 4 to 3. Efren still in the lead.

These guys really want to beat each other. Even if they don't go far in the tournament, they just want to beat each other. They are very familiar with each other's games. There's a lot of pride here. Not hatred, just pride. Ego is on the line.

Jose comes up dry with the cut break and leaves Efren straight in on the 1. There is a 5-9 combo possibility. Efren stroking with authority. 2-ball down. Straight in on the 3, no problem. Straight in on the 4. He glides that cueball over to make the 5-9 combo, and the 9 slides on it. 5 to 3, Efren winning.

Efren breaks this time with a power break. He wasn't getting results the other way, but at least now he can control the cueball without scratching. He still comes up empty.

Jose to the table and shoots and easy 1-ball in the side. Makes the 2-ball in the corner, goes two rails and gets snookered behind the proverbial 8-ball and can't see the 3. He makes a good hit, but leaves it wide open for Efren.

Efren makes the shot, but his draw stroke doesn't work. He tries a safety on the 4.

Jose counters aith another safety by leaving the 4-ball on the end rail. Efren makes a good hit and leaves Jose snookered. The crowd erupts with applause.

Jose doesn't even flinch. Studies the layout, walks around the table twice. Asks for an extension. Jose has to come up with some magic here to keep this a close match. He makes a masse kick shot and almost makes the 4 and leaves a duck shot for Efren in the corner. The crowd sighs in grief for Jose.

Efren makes the duck-shot 4-ball, but he doesn't get a good leave. Efren stumped, not sure what to do. Walks around the table, where he wants to land the cue-ball. Leaves poor Jose with nothing.

Jose can see it, though, makes the hit. Man overboard! Jose scratches. OMG!

Easy Mickey Mouse runout for Efren, and he pulls out ahead even further, 6 to 3.

Efren goes back to the cut break, comes up empty yet again. These breaks are brutal.

Safety battle in progress between Efren and Jose. Jose is kicking at the 1, hoping to tie something up, makes a foul, bad hit. Efren gets ball in hand. Jose goes back to his chair, scratching his head.

The table is playing nice, is dry. The balls are wide open for Efren, and he runs out with ease with no problem. Efren has 7, Jose 3.

Thanks again for the updates...

With the 9 being on the spot I'm thinking Efren may have a chance to make another deep run here. I guess it all depends on how the other players are doing with this break. Just judging by the scores it looks like the Europeans are feeling right at home with these break rules.

I just had a business interruption. Dag nab it.

Game in progress. Both players missed the 1-ball. Jose finally spins it in. The balls are laying just terrible for Jose. Oh, man, Jose slow-rolls it and misses the 2.

Efren goes for a wild shot trying to go three rails and misses horribly with no hit.

Jose gets ball in hand. He makes the 2-ball, but he's misses the 3, leaving Efren a little elevated over the 8. Efren has been getting most of the opportunities, much more than Jose. Efren is raised up and misses, didn't even threaten the pocket. Wow! Both players are falling down.

Jose makes a traditional cross-rail bank in the side and gets bad leave, leaving the cueball on the rail. Sheesh! He tries to roll the 4 in the corner and misses.

Efren makes the 4 in the corner and makes a nice shot with great leave. Still a little work to do. Efren barely makes that 5 ball, as it rattles the pocket going in. Down goes the 6. Tic, tac, toe. Efren at 9, Parica 3.

Speaking of...
How does Shane seem to be adjusting to it? I haven't been able to watch so I am curious to see if it affects him at all.

.839 for Efren and .649 for Jose on the Accu-Stat scoring system so far. Poor Jose. He is getting all the bad rolls. :(

Only one person sittinign the VIP seats.

They look like two punch-drunk players relying on instinct and experience, says Mark Wilson, but he hopes Jose gets the score closer, so the match goes longer.

The balls are not laying well. Efren makes a no-hit trying to kick at the object ball, giving Jose ball in hand. Jose now moving forward, pocketing the 1. 2 laying on the rail, and Jose slides it in. Jose tries for a safety, leaving the 3 haning in the side, hoping to snooker Efren, but he did not.

Efren makes the eash 3-ball duck. He then makes a nice cut on the 4 in the corner. If the shot and the safe is both difficult, go for the shot. And that's what Efren does, makes a three-cushion shot on the 5. He's moving now, folks. Getting ready to stand on top of that hill. A rough day at the office for Jose. :embarrassed2:

Efren on the hill. Jose has 3.

Efren breaks with the cut break, not much of a result. Once again, not one ball falls in the hole.

Jose way overcut the pocket for the 1. He makes it but leaves himself bad, poor fellow. He makes a masse kick on the 2, looking a little like he's disgusted. Not a true effort by Jose. All pockets stand by, but nothing happens, leaving Efren an easy run-out.

Jose concedes the game when Efren gets straight in on the 9.

Efren closes out the match 11 to 3. Efren wins. They both smile and pose for a picture. Game over.

.853 for Efren and .628 for Jose on the Accu-Stats scoring system for this match.

It was sad to see Jose not playing well. They both seemed to be still waking up when the match started. Both played kinda loose on a bunch of shots. The cut break wasn't really working for either player. It was good to see playing against each other tho. Doesn't happen that often. Next match should be interesting tho

That is as bad as Jose can play.... .628?????
But when you're in your 60s, every year you're older is significant....
....Efren is a few years younger.

I see Jose is still dying his hair...Efren is starting to let the grey show.

Even if Jose goes out in 2, the trip is still a success....HOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
