I Got Lucky

Now granted I play in an 8 ball league where all of the games are played in bars and drinking is part of the game but on evenings when I am completely sober half way through a game I move to the table for my shot and I can't remember if I am solids or stripes. I now am going to keep an old poker chip in my case and label it solids and stripes and have to keep it out when I play.

Does this happen to any one else?

Happens to me when I'm not paying attention and not in the game at all, like socializing.

Are you not watching your opponent?

You need some sort of "counting" system like in Blackjack. My suggestion would be to have a beer in ONE hand if you are solids, and have a beer in EACH hand if you have stripes. That way you won't get confused....

P.S...that is an old hidden hustler trick....don't tell anyone I told ya!

Sometimes I don't remember my suit.

I ask my opponent when I can't remember. Once in a while, I'll shoot the opponents ball, and the opponent will let me shoot it, then call foul. I love it when that happens, cuz I get pissed, and run rack after rack after that for the entire evening!!!

Some of my best play is when I'm really torqued at myself...and embarrassed, cuz I get super focused. Gotta love this game.

Yeah I have done this a couple of times. I learned the best way for me to combat this was whenever I went back to my chair I always keep my cue in my hand and if I am solids the cue stays in my right hand and if I am stripes the cue stays in my left hand. It took a little bit to get my body trained, but now it is second nature.

I usually stay very focused and watch his shot but I swear to God sometimes as I see him miss and the balls stop moving I may grab my chalk and look back at the table and whammo.

Well I'm not really much of a beer drinker but since I am in the Philippines playing in bars, maybe I can change it from beers to bar girls.

On second thought that won't work since I like to have one in each hand so I'll always think I'm stripes. :grin-devilish::grin-devilish::grin-devilish:

I found the best way to remember is to refer to spots as spots and stripes as stripes and then remember which group I am on. :D:D:D

In English Pool and Snooker, if you are not sure what group you are on, you can ask the referee (or your opponent when no ref) and they must tell you.

Late in a set, how sure will you be that you changed the chip at the beginning of the game?

Look in the ball return tray you know who shot first you can usually figure it out.

Last night I was shooting a match missed the 14 hung it in the corner. I walk back to the table, set my cue down and take a drink of my beer. When I turn back to the table my opponent had already shot one of my balls in and was pulling the trigger on my hanging 14. I couldn't get the words out to stop him before he pulled the trigger. I felt bad about it and offered a sincere apology, even though he obviously wasn't paying attention. and played the CB where it lay foregoing ball in hand. It seemed the fair thing to do. I didn't want to further capitalize on a stupid mistake in a "have fun meet friends" league. We were evenly handicapped and I won the match anyway.

Classy move...and smart...there's a good chance he would have lit you up if you'd taken the ball in hand, when u played it where it lied, you retained honor, and you actually cancelled your guilt, which enabled you to play it out strong. I like the way u handled it.

There were a couple players in my hometown that played one pocket everyday.

I would go and watch them occasionally.

They would break, make a few balls, then accidently start shooting at the wrong pocket.

Neither would notice.

The other guy would start shooting at the wrong pocket, so they switched pockets mid game.....

It gets even better. I wouldn't say a thing. And sometimes they would switch pockets twice and finish the game in the pocket that they started with when the game began.

I just sat with my mouth shut and enjoyed the circus.

You couldn't do this on a coin-op table but on a standard table you can take the first ball you make and put it on your chair or your table as a reminder.

Where I play they still have chalk cones by each table, although they aren't used. One gentleman would put his ball on top of the cone. Now this is hilarious, there would be times that he'd be racking and looking for a missing ball. He and his opponent would have to be told that the missing ball was still sitting on top of the cone.
