What colors and inlay materials go well with Tulipwood?

Hi guys, new here.

Based on photos, I find tulipwood beautiful and interesting, but I haven't seen a cue with it in person. I'm thinking of having one made and, while probably great by itself, would like to enhance it some with added colors and personalize it a bit with some inlays. What do you think works well with tulipwood, for joints, points, wraps, etc? Does turquoise look good with it?

Thanks for any replies and photos (should you include some).

Dave

Personally, I also love tulipwood. I find that it best works in contrast. Like Ebony. As for inlays, that is subjective, and should be based upon what YOU like.

Here is a BCM (Bryan Mordt) Ebony/Tulip with silver ringwork.

^^I was just going to say ebony. I know a guy that has a Bobby Hunter with ebony, tulipwood, and silver and it looks really cool.

Tip toe...

I'll chip in... Tulipwood, with ebony, silver rings, pink iv**ry...

I remember a Ginacue called "The Pink Lady" that was so ornate, just crazy.. tulipwood, pink iv**ry, rose gold, eight points up and down.. just too beautiful to play with... like a presentation pistol you'd never fire.

definitely looks great paired with ebony wood.

For inlays I think I'd look into blacklip mother of pearl.

Ebony all the way.... Ebony forearm, tulipwood points, white/black/white verneers.

Just make sure they are coring the forearm/butt, as it will be heavy.

Here are a couple pics of my Cocobolo/Tulip wood southwest. It's pretty.[/ATTACH]

Here's a matched player and b/j cue of mine. They are both heavy woods, as you've already been told. Pete worked hard bringing down the weight and they are still close to 20oz

I like tulipwood into highly figured birdseye... no veneers or inlays.

My all-time favorite Southwest was a plain tulipwood into maple.

FYI the tulipwood stock selection makes a large difference in the final outcome. Avoid washed out, faded looking tulip. Look for decent color and contrast. See good and bad examples below, bad being the upper image.

most of the time, do you use closed bridge or open bridge? do you prefer draw shots or follow-through?

a cool TS with tulipwood points into maple front and even a tulipwood joint, rings and butt sleeve.

Love this cue!

best,

Wtf? Can we not event type ivory now?

Did I miss something?

Guys, thanks so much with your replies! It's awkward having no personal experience with the wood, so you have been quite helpful. Especially with the comment about the weight of the wood. Still, does anybody think turquoise goes well with tulipwood?

I once had an early Steve Klein cue that was ebony with turquoise ring work and an ivory joint. A simple but beautiful cue that I unfortunately had to sell (at almost double what I paid for it). I've developed a fondness for turquoise and would like to have another cue with that material in it. Ebony is certainly a good choice, for so many things, but I was hoping turquoise might work with tulipwood, for something a bit different.

Tom, of Triple Cross Cues, says he doesn't think it does. I'm inclined to trust his opinion, but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask for others.

Also, while a "custom" cue interests me greatly, I've seen some great cues with turquoise from McDermott & Mezz that I thought looked quite appealing, though with no tulipwood.

Thanks again for all of your input and photos!

Dave
