Hello Everyone; My name is Bill Smith for those that don't know. I'm primarily a 3 cushion player for the past 45 years. In 3C the TOP players in the world all have a certain way they AIM at the first object ball, in pool I'm sure it's the same.

I'd like to hear from some of the GREAT players of the past and present, like Buddy Hall, Mike Siegel, Efren, Nick Varner, Johnny Archer, John Schimdt, Shane Van Boning, Dennis Hatch, Dennis Orcallo, on what thier theories on AIMING at any shot and WHY they do it a particular way.

If for some reason some people don't want to snitch their aiming system off to the public,(belive me it's for my own reference and comparison), you can PM me your answers.

I hope to get many and ineteresting responces from all!

Can you describe some of the ways that top 3 cushion players aim? Do you think aiming at the first object ball in 3 cushion is as exacting as aiming to pocket an object ball in pool?

Thanks,

pj

So just to be clear, you expect several of the players you name (only one of which has ever, to my knowledge, posted on AZ) to chime right in and explain their aiming technique? Just wanted to be clear about your post.

I'd prefer only TOP players respond to my questions too. But thanks for your response anyway.

No offence Patrick, but, I didn't see your name on my respond list! Sorry I didn't know you were a TOP player in the Chicago area since I only lived there for 59 yrs, I don't recall your name.:o

Bill; I'm not aware of eveyone that does or does not participate in this forum. I was just looking for my own interest from the TOP players if they all had a simlar methods to how they AIM and what they're LOOKING at when they AIM, that's all!

I'm not a TOP player, Bill, but I watched you play many times at Chris's when you hung out there. You were one of the best at Chris's, but if you expect all these TOP players to respond to you because you're also a TOP player, you've got a long wait ahead of you (no offense :)).

Out of the "top players" you have listed, only John Schmidt posts here with any regularity.

You might catch Dennis Hatch posting here right before the Mosconi Cup begins. This is when the pool public takes a vote on who they think the Americans should send. Dennis then posts on this forum quite frequently. His forum name is "Hatchetman," I think.

Though Johnny Archer and Shane Van Boening -- that's "Boening" with an "e" -- have posted on this forum in the past, they may have only posted a few times in a several-year period. :p

The other players you mentioned do not post on this forum at all. :frown:

What a shame you have limited yourself on replies. You might get some qualified answers from forum members here. Though some may not be "top players" in your eyes, there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained from reading what other members have to say. ;)

Good luck in receiving replies from the "top players."

I will let Keith know for sure.

Hey, Bill, Mike Howerton, the owner of AzBilliards, just posted up an article written by Samm Diep, an interview she did with Nick Varner. Nick gave some tips that I think you might enjoy reading.

Here is the thread about the article: Thread about Samm Diep interview of Nick Varner.

Here is the article on AzBilliards Main Page: Nick Varner: The Art of Comeback.

Happy reading, Bill!

Bill,

Can you explain how the 3C players they aim at the object ball? This might prove interesting to pool players.

My experience is that pool players visualize the path of the OB to the pocket and aim accordingly. I imagine billiards players visualize the CB path off the OB using more tangent lines and so forth, so their mental focus is different.

I imagine playing billiards is more like how pool players play position.

Bill, you are probably not aware that aiming methods is the topic that has created the most heated and frustrating exchanges on AZB. There are many that believe in particular systems and will argue for them to the point of putting up their dukes against those that feel it their scientific duty to poke logical holes in these systems. Aiming threads create a lot more heat than light, though they are fascinating in a way, kind of like how it is difficult to avoid looking at a car wreck.

Few top players post here and those that do, like John Schmidt, would probably prefer to avoid making enemies and getting mired in the muck on this topic. Your best bet is to go to the Derby and ask these guys in person.

Fargo or Coleman?

There is an article published in one of the printed pool magazines answering your exact question from the TOP players of the time the article was written (mid 90s I believe). The article has been scanned and is online. I don't have the link, but I'm sure someone here does.

A 2 sentence summary of the article from my own memory in my own words is:
Few, if any, of the pros interviewed aim the same way. Many of the pros can't describe how they aim.
