What do you guys drink while shooting pool?

Anyone who plays better while drinking alcohol is not practicing enough (I'm not sure where Keith McC. fits into this theory).

I think that Keith McCready has been playing pool for so long that the beer he drinks does not affect his game in a negitive way.
I am sure he knows what his limit is and uses beer to help relax and calm himself. After all ... He is playing with the best pool players in the world and he is smart enough to know he needs every skill he has.

I guess it really depends upon your personal make up as to how you shoot after a few beers. I like the relaxed feeling I get from a drink or two and it helps me to focus on the shot and not be so uptight about the game.
I think it helps relax and smooth my stroke and that is a good thing.
Then again the drinks might just be fooling me into thinking I am doing better. :p

Anyhow ... I dont play for money very often and the beer makes pool and the social interaction with my pool playing friends more enjoyable.

If winning is not the bottom line ... set e'm up.

I drink mostly water, in small cups by the Bottled Water Cooler in our community pool room. As no beverages, food, smokes are allowed in the pool room.

Post play I like an Amber Bock (dark beer) occasionally. :D

Wow, I'm a bit surprised. There are two variables that effect my game in a bad way - one is if spanish music is playing on the jukebox (I'm from Miami) and two is if I'm completely sober. I need at least three or four beers to really get going in my game.

LOL, I understand if you are playing a tournament or something - but just hanging out with friends or a few chics, you guys are always sipping water and soda?

Well, I drink corona or amber bock. Some times I'll have a few pinches. But I guess that makes me an alcoholic amongst you guys! :)

Im only 16 so im a minor, in canada, but i have seen peoples cames do into the craper when there drinking, on the other hand my dads girlfriend shoots 75% better when she has had a couple dry ones. JMHO

At home I'll have a glass of ice tea, then water after that.

If playing elsewhere, a Pepsi, then 7-Up after that.

Just started playing pool and just started drinking. Just curious :)

What are your pool goals?

I ask, because those are what will determine what you drink (or don't drink).

If you want to become the best pool player around, leave alcohol alone. If you want to have fun then maybe alcohol will add to that.

Since you're just starting both, I'd advise you to rationally examine the effects of BOTH activities on your happiness. Pool can be just as destructive and addictive as alcohol, if you let it. Or both can make your life better, if you let them.

Drug use is a personal choice, therefore a personal responsibility. Deal with it carefully and with reason. Note those who abuse either/both and ask yourself if that is the type of person you want to become.

IMHO,

Wow

I'm a bit surprised too. I think a few other players may also drink one or two beers while matching up other than Keith. I'm thinking Pagulayan... Am I wrong? I don't see how two beers would affect one's game... Anything after that, though, will take its toll. After the first two, better stick with seltzer, or coffee, depending.

I am really proud of my fellow pool players. You can see here for yourself that the image of drinking and shooting pool for money is a more or less a myth. Pool is like any sport - you need your delicate sense of balance and feel. You need good judgement. You need to be alert and energetic. Pool takes brain power. Alcohol in moderation is fine - that's a personal thing, but alcohol and sports just don't mix.

Sometimes with drugs things get out of control. Please use your good judgement when drinking. You can certainly see we do.

In many bar "money" tournaments I go to, I would say the majority of players (especially the better players) drink coffee, soda pop, or water. We actually "clean up the bar" for a while! Many of the regular drunks seem to vanish and the bartenders like the break.

One time a person who the bartender thought was with the liquor control authority came in (fines bartenders for overserving, etc.). She thought is was good timing because not one person in the bar was drinking an alcoholic beverage!

With those players who do drink, they really cool it on tournament nights. Seems like they are not drinking at all. I've seen them on non-tournament nights and they can barely stand. So they can booze it up, just don't do it when playing serious pool...

Chris,
I found it a pleasant observation too. Most who responded to this post do not drink and play pool. Some images are worth getting rid of, and drunk pool players is a great image for us to get rid of.

In my experience, it isn't the real pool player who drinks, it's the casual player who does. You know, the ones who are taking a date out on a Saturday night, or the college kids looking for something to do - the people who don't play on a regular basis, and for whom pool is definitely just a social exercise. I see the same thing in league play - those who are serious don't drink, those who are not serious do. Unfortunately, guess which stereotype is prevalent pertaining to pool?

Someday, maybe all the negative stereotypes of pool (drinking, smoking, drugging, gambling, hustling low-lifes with no education) will go the way of the dodo. I think as long as those stereotypes are perpetuated by Hollywood, we'll always be fighting an uphill battle. It's so good to see, though, by these posts, that reality is so totally different from the movies.

BTW, I drink either Mello Yello or water, depending on my mood. I never drink alcohol, even when I'm not playing pool.

Well, thanks for the replies guys. I've been playing like three to four times a week for the past three to four months. But I play strictly for fun/social reasons. I love the game but I'm not planning on being a pro. I'm already a professional athlete - for me playing pool is something of a stress release I guess.

When I asked about what you guys drink, I didn't mean for tournament competition or anything, I mean just hanging out. But I now understand from these posts that you guys just don't hang out when playing pool, you guys are in training :) Which is fine :)

Once again, thanks for the replies :)

There is a old corny joke about the country bumkin that always heard about going into town, playing billiards having a good time, and drinking. When he became of age he went into town. The bartender ask him what he wanted to drink? He said I am here to have a good time so give me a glass of billiards. The bartender realizing that this was a bumkin pissed in a glass and gave it to him. The bumkin drank it down and said "If I wasn't a long time billiard drinker I would swear that was a glass of piss"

Sorry guys

What do I drink? I don't drink anything stronger than pop; and he will drink anything.

DAMN kid...I didn't realize you were such a stud and had the savoir faire (look that up in the dictionary, I'm trying to help your verbal skills for future SAT's)
to lure that many young chicks to you.

I better not hear of any beer or joints in your life, or the big arm of Thor (mine) will come down on your head!

I drink diet coke mixed with soda water. Otherwise it is just too sweet and not refreshing. I prefer pepsi but coke is what they have in my home room. Also like iced tea if I need extra caffeine. Rarely drink beer or alcoholic beverages unless I am not really being serious about the game.

sweet tea or water ..
