Any help would be greatly appreciated..


I bought a cue a couple months back from a very respected cue maker. I have no complaints. Its as advertised. When I ordered it I had to choose the shaft size/weight etc...I'm pretty new to the game and have only been playing seriously for about 6 months so I relied on the cuemakers recommendations. He suggested a pro taper shaft 12.50mm/19oz cue. The cue has an Irish linen wrap. It also has a SS joint.

Recently I read a thread about preferences to a wrap or wrapless butt. Out of curiosity I played that night with one of my house sticks that has no wrap. Its also only an 18oz cue. It has a normal shaft and not a pro taper like my main playing cue. Results- I couldn't believe how comfortable it felt. I liked the lighter cue. I much prefer wrapless, and the shaft is at least 13mm if not bigger without the pro taper-which also felt much more comfortable. The house cue is made by Players. I'm not suggesting its a quality cue...nor am I alluding that its better than my playing cue.

My questions are: Does anyone use a cue this light (18oz)? Is this just a case of maybe a different mindset because I'm thinking more due to using a different cue? Also does anyone know what type of joint a Players cue has? I definetley like the hit better than a SS joint? How do I measure the shaft to find out what size this cue has?

Krell, there is nothing wrong with your new cue. All the things you've mentioned are only personal preferences that one developes over time so don't read too much into the stuff you see on this forum. There is good information here, to be sure, but if you're not careful it can run you in circles. Play with your cue, get used to it, and down the road you can always get another one and use this cue as your breaker. :smile:
 
Yes, I play with an 18 oz. cue and my break cue is also 18 oz. I had my cue made by Mike Gulyassy at baby's pro shop and my specs were to be able to adjust the weight up or down a 1/2 ounce but I kept it at 18 oz. All my specs are based on personal preferences. I have tried many cues with different weights and shaft diameters and with this recent purchase I feel this is the cue I have spent many years searching for. But once again it is based on personal preference. It has a 3/8 by 10 pin with black phenolic joint and the shaft is 13mm with a super pro taper. All these specs are personal preference based on trial and error over the years. If I had a redo with this cue I would have ordered a 30" butt, however I have never been more satisfied with a cue. Tramp- I know there is nothing wrong with my cue. I struggle with consistent grip pressure. For some reason the wrapless cue seemed to just melt in my hand. I'm not obsessed with buying another cue. In fact this house cue(Players) seems to fit me better. Does anyone know what kind of joint they use?
 
u can copy Earl, he had glove on both hand....lol

House cue normally steal joint, I think u feel ur house feel better coz u have been use quite while.....that's why u feel comfortable on it, if u really want to find out the difference, u purchase the predator then u will find it out more information....

After playing with this "house cue" for a while, I'm going to bet you that your cue will feel even better than before as well. Let me know if I'm right.
 
Btw...

You can adjust the weight of your new cue. There's a weight bolt in the butt, under the bumper. You can do it yourself if needed.

The house cue may indeed suit you better at the moment, may suit you better always. However, what I have found is that different weight cues, different balance cues, and different shafts and tips suit my game at different stages of my game. The cue maker recommended and built a very middle of the road cue. It will play very well for the vast majority of people and anyone should be able to play fairly well with it. Having said that, there may be a better cue for you right now and it may indeed be the house cue. Some cues are more forgiving of small errors, some are more demanding but also make it easier to move the cue ball around once you can control the stick.

What may mean more to you than the weight is the balance point. Try just balancing both cues across a single finger held out over the table. How many inches from the butt cap not counting the rubber bumper to where the cue balances on your finger? Adjust the weight on the custom so the balance matches the Player and it might please you better.

I have made radical changes in cues a handful of times over the years. Each time it took me months to play 100% my best game with the new cue. The cue you are most used to will often play best for you. Once used to the new cue it may take your game to an all new level though.

I'm on a kick playing with house cues at my local pool hall right now, pretty much the first one I grab off the wall. Straight or crooked, if the tip is half decent and it is structurally sound I play with it. The last trip I found myself playing with an 18 ounce cue. It was two to three ounces heavier than my favorite superlight cue and a little lighter than my wrapped cue I use when using a slip stroke. It played very well. Much to my surprise it balanced at 17.25" from the butt, two to three inches behind my usually favored forward weighted cues. I'll have to work more with this, I may have to readjust weight on my favorite cue to move the balance back.

The weight of a cue comes down to personal preference and don't let anyone else tell you any different. The balls have no idea how much your cue weighs. If you're comfortable with a lighter cue then so be it. The cue maker was correct in steering you to the 19oz though because 19 seems to be the standard/average weight for a cue. Pro taper seems to be another standard but I'm a little surprised he recommended a 12.5mm tip because 13mm seems to be the base. Sure, there are variations all around but I'm talking about a basic cue spec.

I think you'll appreciate that linen wrap when it starts warming up and your hands start sweating more. You gotta give the Irish linen a bit of break in time. It's probably really really smooth and slick right now. It'll get better as the dirt and grime settles into it. I prefer leather on mine. That's another thing you can do cheaply if you're interested, just have the linen changed to leather.

Good luck with this. I'm sure that custom cue is world's better than that house cue. You'll grow into it. And as someone else said, be patient with it now and in the future when you know more about cues and have more confidence in your personal preferences you can order another cue and use this one as a breaker.

Wow I think I bought the same cue as you! I am also new to the game (about a year). Its is a Players 19 oz with a black irish linen wrap. came with a Le Pro tip hard tip. Is yours brown with black points and white diamonds? Also, I paid about 120$
