What happened to gambling during tourneys?

I am looking to start a regional 10 ball montlhy event fir bigger money. The splitting crap is one thing that makes me hesitate. It isnt fair to room owners or the people there to watch.

Some rooms have it in the rules that the final match must be played to receive added money. Something like that will do the trick usually. I always offer to split if I am in the hotseat. Most of the tournaments I play in though the semi-finals is played close to closing time so it makes sense to split it up.

Oscar Dominguez says he never splits. He said "How in the world am I supposed to learn how to win if I don't even play the final match of the tournament?"

I have NEVER split and never will..... Why give up some of my cash??????? That's Crazy Talk

How long does it take to run a few racks off????

Action at tournaments is ALIVE and well. If there's none where you are, get something going. It's fun.

In my experience when I ask someone I don't know to play for cash they think I am a shark or something. Even if I offer low sets they think I am setting them up. I usually play in bars though and not a pool hall.

Heck most of the guys that play where I play often, offer to play for a beer at least, they will buy me a beer if I let 'em win.... I guess it makes 'em feel good or something.

I've had the same experiences in bars, they always think someone has this elaborate plan to con them out of their money. I don't bother with it unless they offer to play for a few bucks. Usually it's just kept at playing for a beer at the bars for me. But every now and then...........

This caught me off guard because he basically had a free shot to beat me

I would say that 75% of the finals are split here. I refuse to doit. Isnt a tournament meant to find out who the best player is?
I have played for it all in the finals, really makes a fun set for spectators and players. I stopped asking because people get offended if you even ask.

I noticed this when I came back on scene, players don't want to play the finals anymore. Now it's common place for the finalists to "split the money," especially in the smaller, local tournaments.

The first time I had someone ask me I said "no, but if you give me 60% I'll make myself do it".....he gladly excepted. This caught me off guard because he basically had a free shot to beat me....and still didn't want to pay because "that's how they do it these days"....brutal.

Its not a move, if you dont want to gamble, no big deal, but no one should be offended if someone ask them to gamble in a POOL HALL???

90% of this fourm talks/brags about action, so if your asked and you dont like it, just say I dont gamble.

To your question, it just does not happen anymore. I think the fact that so few big name players match up hurts the game. I like what TAR does, but I have been to many tournaments and pool halls and watched as players just sat and waited for easy action and avoided each other.

Thats way there are so few American players that can compete with the players from other countries.

If just saying no is all that it took than that is fine, but why do so many gambling pool players consider us "Nits" if we don't want to gamble? I'm a single father with a mortgage and other expenses. I don't gamble with my money. I have better things to do with it.

Personally, I find the players that want to split the finals match money and not play it out more of a Nit than those that don't want to gable at all.

I like this post.
I've always liked action but I didn't bug people to gamble that didn't gamble.
If they don't want my money, I don't want theirs.

.and yeah, lots of players that don't play the finals ARE nits.....
...being guaranteed second money is not enough?

I don't see the harm in asking your opponent if they are interested in a small side bet. To me it makes the game more exciting. They can either accept or decline the offer the way I see it.

I knew there was something I liked about you.:clapping:
Many players get lost in the 'how to' aspect of this game and forget that
pool is a war game...like chess or boxing.
You fight your opponent...the correct shot is the winning shot.

SEND IT!

Very well said..I needed to remember this..thanks

I agree completely. I did this once at a smaller tournament in St. Louis of about 36 people. I had to be double dipped and the winner of the looser bracket was in the looser because I had put him there. He offered to split with me and I countered with winner takes 1st and 2nd place prize money.

He backed down and lost the match and was pissed that I didn't split. Ridiculous.

Were you in the tight bracket?

small tournments killed gambling

Years ago there were no small tournaments or leagues. Unless you
wanted to play for fun you gambled. The Hustler was still fresh on
everyones mind. But once little tournments started to pop up people
could play for a small entry fee and get their play out. If they won a
few matchs they could be there a long time, and not spend $10.
Before L&T's people that couldn't run 3 balls gambled. Who would
want to just always play for fun. Red Fisher an old scuffler from
Dallas used to say the big scores put the money in my pocket, but
the little scores keep it there, and there's thousands of em going
to keep it there.

A question for you guys who like to side bet on your matches in tourneys. Do you ask before every single match you play? Do you ask people of comparable skill or anybody you draw?

Gambling

Some on here say they can remember everyone gambling in tourns.. But can they remember when guys went threw the crowd getting bets offering odds and waala. the guy won who was the underdog. it was uncanny. they made more money in gambling than the tourny payout. If the tourn. cant get over limit the field, play one set longer race final, lower the races . I make everyone play it out if you spit its in the parking lot after the match. I guess these guys calling people nits have a tushhog with them. That sounds good to say i cant play if i aint gambling but its bull****. If you cant play you cant play.I played this weekend no handicap races to 8 10 ball was a blast . The kid that won CHAD Vilmont played super.Didnt ask me to gamble (i didnt ask him).

Just got back from the Western BCA 8 ball tournament and I can assure anyone who wants to know that gambling is alive and well in pool. It may take getting together a few hundred hard core degenerate gamblers and reams of tables to have action but it's out there.

My guess is that with green fees instead of $1 a game the BCA nationals in Vegas will be a much improved environment for such. It's funny. Even if pool players are rolling for 500 a set they still seem to hate putting in a buck for the game:)

Honestly,if I'm gonna gamble,I'll go to the casino and play craps.I love pool and play for the love of the game, and to challenge myself. In tournaments,I'm too focused on playing to think about side distractions like bets. Some people love the extra incentive, I'd rather not be bothered with it,as I already have a paying job.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting to gamble, just don't think everyone who wants to bet is out to rob someone.
BTW, my odds are way better on the pool table than at any casino. I'd rather see a return on my investment of time I've spent practicing than place a bet and hope.

Somehow funny that players who dont like to gamble are called out as nits......

Ever heard about respect for someones personal Opinion?
