What is Irving Crane doing in this video?

At 37:39 he was considering going rail fist, cutting the first ball, instead of playing the throw.

At 52:24 he was checking to see if the two striped balls interfered with each other, so he could shoot them in the other corner.

At 55:33, I think he pressed the cue on the rail to brace himself from moving beyond where he was (Whoa Nellie, this is where I get down).

At three points in his run it looks like he is using his cue stick for measurements of some sort. Does anyone know what he's doing at the following times?
A)37:39
B)52:24-52:30
C)55:33

At 37:39 it looks like he is looking at the two-cushion path and where he wants to hit the second cushion. This is a common habit of 3-cushion players.

At 52:24 I think it's just a mannerism.

At 55:33 he seems to be thinking about where he's going to send the balls he hits.

Interesting thoughts, guys. Thanks.

One thing about B) is that he seems to be tracking his cue with his eyes to a point on the rail.

A) He was just pointing at the balls on the rail he wanted to run into and as he was pointing at those balls he looked at them. Unfortunately he didn't open them up as good as he wanted to. The subsequent shot at 38:40 was a fantastic shot - playing shape cross side for the first ball in the combination and landing perfect on it. It might not look like much to some people but if he had gotten out of line he would have a tough time getting out with a break shot.

B) It is possible he was calculating where the cue ball would hit the short rail to figure out how much English to put on the cue ball. He really spun the cue ball to get on the next ball.

C) He moved a ball near the side pocket, it is possible he was looking at where he wanted that ball to stop.

Thanks for posting the question, gave me an excuse to look at that video again.

Bob: I have to disagree with you on the first one. He checks to see if they are frozen, then if they are lined up to the pocket.

From the way the balls moved, he hit the first ball on the nose. It didn't move to either side, and the called ball hit the facing on the short rail.

If they were frozen, he would have tried to throw the ball towards the center of the pocket. He took a gamble the line was close enough that it would go as is.

Not frozen, so his first look was at the angle needed to play it as a combo, to cut it into the center of the pocket, which required a rail first hit.

...
Later on he checks for that but at close to "37:39" he is checking to break them apart. I think you're looking at the shot after the one I was talking about.

Bob:

Oops, I WAS talking about the next shot. Never mind. :)

I think you are correct. He hands off the bridge to the ref, then walks back with his eyes focused on the two balls, checking the two rail path to hit them.

Is this past the time of the slow cloth?

Do you see the size of those side pockets? I believe they were over 5". Johnnyt
