...who do not put their location on their profile. Do they owe money to someone? Are they on the lamb? Are they too lazy?

It's kinda nice to be able to glance over and see really where they are coming from! :D

I suspect that some cases it is due to being a Chicken Shit:rolleyes: . Many of the people who do not add their location like to talk a great deal of sh!t, and I also suspect that they think because of this no one can find them.;)

By the way... what's your social security # ???

That sounds close to right manwon. :)

Could be a big chunk of paranoia mixed in..... like someone's gonna track down their personal info and empty bank a/c's, apply for their social security benefits and buy 43 Herceks, Searings and Cogs from Cue Addicts on their VISA.

I know that on a few forums I own / admin I do not put my location. I for one know how easy it is for someone to find you with the right tools. However if I've been there a while, or it's a forum like TAZ or AZ I'll put it because I'm not here to make a rucus, as they are more "Mature" forums...

My 2 cents...

It's not paranoia when they really are after you. But they ain't gettin me... I listed a flase location. THAT oughtta fool'm. ;)

I think I'll have to agree with jigger that Manwon hit the nail on the head. I say, Man Up on this posters and grow a pair!!! :D

Now the women on this site always have that info on their profile. They know it is what it is. Just a little geographical reference for all of us ponder.

I'm beginning to think maybe these posters in question lead double lives. You know, probably twisted individuals who collect the mints from the bottom of urinals in their spare time or something! :D

Or maybe these accounts are rushly (is there such a word?) made second accounts used mainly for flaming and other stuffs.

If I accidentally insult someone, you're all free to look me up and visit me. Insults on purpose count too, you lazy bums ! :)

I would bet that they could be identified in public by the Sh!t Eating grins on their faces:eek:  :D

Because it really shouldn't matter. But it does to many people because in the end the internet is not the great substitute for personal interaction. In other words people need to be around people and having a geographical reference to attach to a onine personal allows others to attach some form to the substance of a "person" online.

I personally think that there should be no personal information at all. A contributer to the forum ought to be judged solely by the merit of their contributions. OR there ought to full disclosure with no screennames and verified identities.

Another group I participate in only allows users to participate with the real names. Obviously some people in that group are going to use ficticious names but the general feeling is that most are using their names and it feels good to discuss things there with "real" people.

Not that any of you are less than "real" :-)

In a group like this I prefer to have the ability to choose to be "myself" or to be anonymous behind a screenname. Sometimes you just don't need your real world identity to be on display and open to scrutiny. And this is for a host of reasons not related to the actions of other board members towards you.

On the internet content matters more than place.

John, I really do not understand, when is it necessary not to be, and why would anyone ever want to be something they are not, unless they have something to hide, unless they are not proud of who or what they are, or unless they are afraid of open confrontation when others will know who they are?

Thanks in advance for your answer!!!

I 'm a cop. We try not to have any internet info out there for the obvious reasons - no unwelcome visitors to our homes.

i can not speak for anyone but myself here but i am not hiding from anyone. if you feel the need to know where i am from (and this is most likely a strange concept for some) but you might try reading some of my posts sometime as i have not been shy to say where i am in them.

Well, for example, you might want to participate in this group but not let anyone in the real world know you are doing it because you don't want other people to be able to track and comment how you spend your time. You might be in a sensitive job or some high security thing and not want to provide any clues to your job or location. Perhaps you don't want to open up the option for people to impersonate you. (this is a very real issue and has happened with bad consequences). Perhaps you don't want to be personally attacked for your views and an online identity shields you from that. I'd hate to talk about the good times smoking dope and get "outed" to people I don't want to know about that. We all know how the pyschostalker works when they go into overdrive to out someone.

I, for example, have been viciously attacked on a very personal level on other boards in the past - ashamedly I also responded in kind - with people going so far as to drag my wife into the fray. Had I been anonymous in those flame wars then the ONLY thing people would have been able to use would have been what I wrote with the rest being pure conjecture.

Those are some things which are reasonable for someone to want to keep their identity private.

I am also not talking about being someone you aren't. I don't see you as Manwon or Craig. To me "you" are the sum total of your posts that I have read on this board. I don't care what your past is, what you do for a living, where you are located, I only care about what you say on this board as relates to my interaction with topics we both comment on. If what you say has validity then it's good content, if it doesn't then it's useless content. What is useless to me may not be to someone else. The only time I might ever care to know anything more about you would be to know your experience level on a particular topic but I wouldn't need to verify that unless we were doing business together. Other than that all you need to do to be "you" is to post. No one but you is doing it so it's all you.

There are valid issues such as privacy and other issues such as schizophrenia that lead people to not divulge their "government" name online. It is really up to each person to decide for themselves and up to the community to decide the value of that person's participation.

How do you know that I am really John Barton?

In a pool forum...

I don't have a problem showing who I am here. In fact my avitar is a picture of me -- albeit photoshoped by a peer on a babys head. (it's titled "Baby Tim") I don't care here... We're talking about pool and billiards. What kind of trouble can I get into since I don't play for money?

Having said that, if I'm on a stock forum or something that is personal and/or intimate, like medical/health/relationship/money forums - I'm going in under the cover of the internet.

Having said all that I don't pin-point where I'm from, but "north of NYC" gives y'all an idea.
