What is it with people...

I think it adds to the forum if we know where you're from. Customs, traditions and rules on a bar box are different depending on where you're from.

As an example: I'm from suburban NYC... I'd love to hear what the "bar box culture" is like in the St. Louis area since I have in-laws out there and visit often.

Well, for example, you might want to participate in this group but not let anyone in the real world know you are doing it because you don't want other people to be able to track and comment how you spend your time. You might be in a sensitive job or some high security thing and not want to provide any clues to your job or location. Perhaps you don't want to open up the option for people to impersonate you. (this is a very real issue and has happened with bad consequences). Perhaps you don't want to be personally attacked for your views and an online identity shields you from that. I'd hate to talk about the good times smoking dope and get "outed" to people I don't want to know about that. We all know how the pyschostalker works when they go into overdrive to out someone.

I, for example, have been viciously attacked on a very personal level on other boards in the past - ashamedly I also responded in kind - with people going so far as to drag my wife into the fray. Had I been anonymous in those flame wars then the ONLY thing people would have been able to use would have been what I wrote with the rest being pure conjecture.

Those are some things which are reasonable for someone to want to keep their identity private.

I am also not talking about being someone you aren't. I don't see you as Manwon or Craig. To me "you" are the sum total of your posts that I have read on this board. I don't care what your past is, what you do for a living, where you are located, I only care about what you say on this board as relates to my interaction with topics we both comment on. If what you say has validity then it's good content, if it doesn't then it's useless content. What is useless to me may not be to someone else. The only time I might ever care to know anything more about you would be to know your experience level on a particular topic but I wouldn't need to verify that unless we were doing business together. Other than that all you need to do to be "you" is to post. No one but you is doing it so it's all you.

There are valid issues such as privacy and other issues such as schizophrenia that lead people to not divulge their "government" name online. It is really up to each person to decide for themselves and up to the community to decide the value of that person's participation.

How do you know that I am really John Barton?

John, you have made some good points, and I can say that I would agree with some of them. However John, while you do seem very calm, at the same time, you also seem a little paranoid. As far you not being John Barton, I suspect that is most likely true, however, by your own words that would not be out of character for you any way.;)

You see for me, I do not like to communicate in the anonymous, in fact I do not even really like to deal with people who are not open about who and what they are.

Being in the US Army for twenty three years, I had to live under a shroud of Secrecy due to my Military Occupational Specialty. While I maintained the required cover of my activities, and did what was required under those conditions, I never liked and still do not like being deceptive with others.:(

Last of all John, I find it very hard to take a person at face value when they have no face. To take this a single step further, I really can not take some one seriously who openly chooses to hide their identity, this forum or any INTERNET forum in my opinion is a place to met new people, possibly start new business relationships, network yourself, to learn new things / gain additional information about subjects we enjoy, and above all to make new friends, however, how can any of this be accomplished through deceptive behavior.

John on this subject we will have to agree to disagree.;)

Have a nice night, who ever you are!!!!!!:D

How is Washington State any how!!!:D

Curly,

It is hardly cold here in michigan.

Although!!! 3 years ago i was up visiting my mom in Big Rapids during the winter, and I knew it was cold outside cuz, her car barely started! and the thermostat said -30 outside!!! @ 6am and with no wind either.

I'd rather it be cold out anytime over it being HOT outside.

I find this amusing. People complaining about others hiding their identity or location.

"I find it very hard to take a person at face value when they have no face. To take this a single step further, I really can not take some one seriously who openly chooses to hide their identity, this forum..........."

All this coming from a few people who have Agent Smith from The Matrix and a picture of a dog as avatars.

Well everyone is allowed an opinion. It's just not really cool to accuse people of cowardice and imply that they they are hiding because they choose not to reveal their identity on the net.

The deal is this, on any given topic there are comments, you either agree with them or you don't. If any of those comments affect you in the physical world where you need to act on them then that's the only time you should really care whether the person behind the comments has any "validity" or not. I.e. If someone comes on the forum and begins to trash your business anonymously. That would obviously be a case where someone is hiding behind anonymity to attempt to harm you. How you personally deal with that is up to you. Some people say, no problem, bring it on, but I guarantee you that if someone were to get really nasty it wouldn't be so easy to ignore. Now, this is where community comes in. If you hve a good rep with the community then the community will defend you and the troublemaker will usually be dealt with. But this is only because you have earned the respect of the community not for who you are in real life nor for what you do, but for who are online to your group.

No one has a face here. I don't even know what your "avatars" look like because I don't load them to save bandwidth, nor do I care. Your face is your personality. If it's ugly then that's how people will think of you, if it's respectful then that's how you are viewed.

Like I said before, no one cares about being taken seriously unless they are in some kind of transaction with another person. Otherwise it's all ego and center of attention preening. If someone needs to be serious then they will choose to reveal their identity in order to get the validation they need to transact as they wish.

I was in the Air Force. You could have opted out of whatever your MOS was if you weren't cool with it. I was assigned to become a cop. I didn't want to become a cop and so I didn't. Many of friends over the years also elected to retrain in other fields. I can understand your attitude as relates to your experience. I think it's a little harsh to project deception onto people who choose to remain anonymous in internet forums. As long as the anonymous person is not doing anything that harms another person then there is no deceit in not stating who you are and where you are.

If someone's intention is to network here then they will rightly choose to disclose who they are. Some people come here just for entertainment, they don't care to do business with anyone else on the board. They just want to goof off and make funny comments here and there without disclosing who they are. And that's fine too. Again it's pretty harsh to accuse everyone who chooses privacy of deception.

How to make friends, learn about new things, and do business while anonymous? Try reading about Second Life. There are people in that world who do all these things without ever disclosing to anyone who they are in real life. They have deep friendships, they build cool stuff and learn new things together, and they do business in a fantasy currency that has real world value. How do I know this? My ex-wife was a part of that world, almost fully immersed. I dipped in now and then. Those folks take that life and each other very seriously.

I don't know what your experience level is in internet forums. I have been on them since 1996. You have probably never had the pleasure of being cyberstalked by an unrelenting troll. I hope you never do. One of those experiences is enough to regret sharing your real name with the world on the internet. Most boards these days are moderated so trolls are less of a problem but there are still plenty of reasons to protect your privacy. And, also, for a lot of the reasons you state, plenty of reasons to use your real name.

So goes the famous cartoon, "on the internet nobody knows you are a dog." They only see if you act like one.

As a deadly CIA operative and desperately hiding from an Anna Nicole paternity suit I have my reasons to fly under the radar......:p

PS - I'm late with 3 books at the library too.

To Manwon...

Craig...John is a VERY well known person, both here on AzB, and on other pool forums, and in the billiard industry at large, and has been for many years. He's been involved in the pool biz for more years than most of us have been playing, and has never shied away from anyone, anywhere. I've known him personally, as a friend, for more than 20 years (can you believe it's been that long John? LOL). He's very upfront about his opinions (which are nearly always backed up with facts to support his posts), and most of the time they are right on target...like in this thread. Anyone who really wants to know, like was posted by someone else, can merely reread old posts and threads, and know exactly who someone is, and where they are from, as well as where they 'hang out'. Just thought I'd add my thoughts...and btw, he really IS John Barton! :D

My father used to tell me that the reason that people wear beards is to hide behind them. :D :D :D :p

I dont care who anyone is but it would be nice for everyone to list their general location just to get A better handle on the 'pool culture' in their area and to put things said in the proper perspective.

Many times someone will say something like- "Well around here we never play 3 fouls" or "I pay $18 HR table time" ok that should be clear enough.
