What is the greatest compliment someone has given you?

A good friend of mine who is 78 and I'm 35 play a lot of 1 pocket on the weekends for a few hrs! Any way, this past Sunday I was playing pretty good and I've been practicing my 1 rail kicks into my hole!!! So, he says to me, ya know Eli, you bank and kick as good as earl heisler,(forgive me if I misspelled), and he said with such a serious face!!! I never got a nicer compliment:)

Earl Heisler could play quite well, so it was a very nice compliment.

I won a junior snooker tournament when I was 13 and the winner got to play a 1 frame exhibition against Steve Davis.

I broke and got lucky leaving the CB right up behind the green. Steve says "well you've got me in all kinds of trouble here kid, well played".

He gets out of it, I play another safe but fail, and he proceeded to knock in a 147. I was 13 playing my idol and I got 2 shots, what a heartless bast...! Ha.

One of the best moments of my life, even if I did only get 2 shots.

Pidge,

That reminds me when I was about 15 & playing my Dad. I had been playing for about 2 years & he had to basically run out to beat or he'd lose. So I was shooting this corner to corner shot & I rattled it. I was chalking my cue & when I looked up he had not moved & was just looking at me with a bit of a scowl on his face. I asked, 'what?' He asked me, 'Did you do that on purpose?' I said, ' No Dad, I missed it. I do mis you know.' He didn't say anything else but he had made it clear that he did NOT want me doing that. Just like he did not do it when he beat me all of the times before.

Thanks for bring back a memory of my Dad.

Best to Y'a.
Rick

I've had two people that I beat in league so bad that they told me the match gave them nightmares weeks later.

Also played a few games with Bob Jewitt in Des Moines who told me if I fixed my stance I had potential to be a great player :)...probably was just being nice lol.

My biggest compliment?

#$@&*&%$# POOL HUSTLER!

When you're being sweet-talked by a gambler....
...it's cause your money is in his pocket.

Dont know if it was a compliment but ,
" Seriously?...I dont know if your the best bad player or the worst good player ive ever seen." Kidwill

I guess the best compliment i actually got from a pro Player was, and only once...
"gee Tron , Your really learnin this game" Pete Fusco, after i rail first 2 rail kicked a ball away from my opponents pocket after his break (in 1 pocket)and made it off the back of the pile into my pocket ....with perfect position.
Other wise he hasnt said a word about my game in 5 years.:embarrassed2:

President Bush was in Reno, NV for a Safari Club Intl. show and went out of his way to shake my arm (No Right Hand) and thank me for my service and pet my Service Dog, Steven. At an awards ceremony in 2007, General Colin Powell, US Army (RET) Shook my arm, thanked me for my service and pinned my Purple Heart onto my Chest along with the Postmaser General John Potter. For the Introduction of the $.41 Purple Heart Stamp.

Equally as memorable. A group of people took the time and pooled their resources to help a complete stranger reconnect with Pool. I can't thank you guys enough here at AZ Billiards. You really know how to make a guy feel appreciated and welcome!

Thank you,

Also, Several people have asked me. 11Bravo was my MOS (Job) in the military. It's the designator for the US Army Infantryman.

Robert,
We're glad you joined our little group of pool players.

Do you still have Steven?

Yes, Sir.
He's a Golden Ret. I received from Americas VETDOGS. He's getting older (10), and he has some bone spurs in his spine, so he's about to retire. But a better friend and companion one cannot ask for.

Robert,
I wanted to apologize for being coy with you when we spoke on the phone. I was trying to keep the surprise a secret.

Also, since you are new to the forum, you may want to check your "REP". That can be viewed by clicking on "User CP" in the upper left corner of your screen. Then go down the bottom portion of the next screen where it reads: "Latest Reputation Received". There will occasionally be little notes sent to you approving or disapproving and relative of a particular particular post. I'm sure you already know about the PM (Private Messages).

Stay in touch.

she said Fats immediately stated "I can still beat any of them - except that one!!!"

The greatest compliment I ever received was in the Bicycle Club in L.A. although I really didn't hear about it until years later at my house in Dallas Texas.

I was playing at the Bicycle Club warming up for the Pro Tournament and in the room walks Minnesota Fats and his wife, 'T Bell'.....they sat down and were talking among themselves. At one point I saw 'Fats' point over in my direction and for a moment wondered what he could be saying to his wife..... I quickly brushed the thought aside.

Years later, after Fat's passing 'T Bell' came through Dallas and I invited her to stay at my house in Lake Highlands.....she agreed and my wife prepared the guest room.

That night we were talking and she brought up that night at the Bicycle Club and what she and Fats were talking about. She said "I ask Fats if {he thought} he could still beat all these professional players in the tournament" .... she said Fats immediately stated "I can still beat any of them" as he scanned the room... he saw me, stopped, and pointed "except that one!!!"

This was, still to this day, the greatest compliment I've ever received, especially when T Bell said "That's the first time I had ever heard Fats compliment another pool player and admit he might not be able to beat them".

Thanks Fats, you inspired me as a young boy watching the 'Wide World of Sports' and how could I have possibly known someday I would be in the position that you were watching me play...RIP Rudolph Wanderone Jr....I'm was truly Blessed on that day - 'The Game was my Teacher'

I haven't seen T Bell in many years, if anyone knows her, please tell her "hi" for me and I hope she's alive and well in Nashville if that's still where she's living. Godspeed .....

I've had two memorable ones, and each time this thread comes back I wonder why I didn't share.

First one I was at a biggish annual tourney out of town and I was down 7-1 going to 8- and miraculously I came back and won the match. It wasn't pretty by a long shot, and especially towards the end I gave the guy some chances that he missed, but I got there. I was so focused on trying to win that I didn't notice anyone around, but for the next few days random strangers would stop me and congratulate me on The Big Comeback.

Second one was at the same venue, a few years later. I had to play someone who had routinely beaten me senseless every time we'd ever drawn each other. I pumped myself up full of fear, adrenaline, and the desire to play my best game and go down trying- no regrets. I got a huge lead on the hill- but I actually took a short break in the middle of the run, right before the last 9 with a slightly tough leave. My hands were sweating and monkeys were going nuts in my mind. If I missed, that player would run a few racks immediately and I'd never, ever see the object ball again. I washed and dried my hands, shook it off, came back, and made the winning 9. I went to shake my opponent's hand and they stared shell-shocked at the empty table, slowly shook their head, and said: "I never got a chance."

That's about ten years ago now, but that one still means a lot. A little embarrassed I had to take a break, but there it is.

After being double steered into Steve "Snake" I-forget-his-last-name (Smith?) from Dallas by someone I trusted and respected till that point, we played a set to 11 for $200. He walked in with a 1-piece Dufferin and ran the 1st two racks then totally dumped the next 7-ball shot to stall around, I somehow got it to 9-9 then played two unbelievably lucky safeties to win the set.

Even though I was outclassed by far I wanted to offer him good courtesy action and asked if he wanted to play another set, he replied "no thanks!!" then gave Jim Ward the stinkeye before stalking out the door.

Jim Ward, whereabouts was he from?

Music to my ears

Every time I hear someone say......."You just don't look like a pool player, I'm gonna' have to try you again in a few days".
That delights me to no end!

Played in our end of season tournament ($10) so anyone in the league (16 teams) can play since it's our party night (free food) and open pool. it's a TOUGH league. Most teams have at least one master, some have many more. There is no limit... it's ACS.

I get paired up in first match with one of the top shooters in the league, Marvin. It's 9ball race to 3. He's a master level player even if he does not have the "official" ranking yet ;)

I beat him 3-1. Someone asked me how I did, and I said I won, but I know if it were a bigger race, he would smoke me, not a big deal.

I heard him telling his buddy, "the guy never missed". I liked it because being as good as he is (monster) he didn't resort to demeaning losing to a lesser player, or make excuses.... he lost because they other guy shot better on that particular day.
