What is the greatest compliment someone has given you?

Re:

I have had a few people tell me over the years that my stroke reminded them of Efren. Too bad the rest of my game doesn't...:)

Sorry for the delay

Jude,

That would be the best compliment ever but it was from one of our posters here on AZ...I was playing him in a tournament and he was staring at me the whole time...couldn't keep his eyes off me....and then says "you look like Brad Pitt"...but he said it in a old Swahili dialect, and I am rusty with my old Swahili dialects, but I said back to him "thank you"..so I thought... .but since I speak broken Swahili....turns out I said "Your momma said the same thing last night"...anyways a fight ensued, he got his own blood on brand new cloth and then I proceeded to run a 5 pack and out on him...

Worldison2, sorry about the broken nose....

Christian

....Spent all afternoon at the plastic surgeon's. Don't worry about the nose. It was a misunderstanding. You are truly amazing! How did you get Jude to post a non-pool related thread?

Taylor and Wimpy liked my game

As a favor to a collector, Eddie Taylor autographed and commented on most of the pictures in one of Eddie Robin's 1st One Pocket book. Under my picture Taylor wrote, "Here's a kid who knows a lot about bank pool." It dont get no better than that. Thrill #2 was when Luther Lassiter told me he would never play in another bank tournament after watching me beat One-eyed Tony Howard at Joe Burn's Forest Park, Dayton bank tourney. Wimpy said he had thought he knew the bank game until he seen the brutal amount of oil I leaked onto Tony to beat him. And he never did play in another bank tournament.

I think mine was from Johnny Archer in 1992. He said "nice shot" when I was playing him. That isn't much but considering he was the world champion at the time it meant a lot to me.

During Desert Storm, we had stopped during the ground invasion to check our vehicles. During our stop I was assigned the responsibility to check out some structures that were very near us. While checking out the structures we found a group of children who were hiding because they had seen our movement through the area. The oldest child was maybe 12 and the youngest in the group was around 7 years old, these kids had been left on their own for sometime. It really broke my because all I could think about at the time were my kids, and here were some children living like this dirty and hungry. We could not take them with us due to the on going conflict, so we gave them some blankets, enough food and water for around a week. As we were leaving every one of them were smiling, and saying good bye in their language.

About 24 hours after this event the Iraqi Government agreed to a Cease Fire and all Hostilities ceased. I contacted a faction of the Red Cross and provided the location of these children. I later learned they had been picked-up and moved to a refuge camp.

The look on the children's faces that day, went from utter fear to thankfulness was the greatest compliment I have every been paid, and nothing will every compare to it for me.

one of mine came last weekend in a tournament that is handicaped..i will admit im a bit underated in it but it was my first time playing in it. well i had to play one on the top players here in Richmond.. Dave the Dentist. He had to give me the 6 and the breaks..it was a race to five and i had him 4 to 1...but i soon found out why he is one of the top shooters here in Richmond..it soon was 4 to 4 and i had the 7 8 9 on the table.

i got on the wrong side of the eight and just plain missed the shot.. and he ran out. After is was done he said. Tony ..it is a pleasure to finialy meet you..i have heard you name alot around the pool halls...people are saying you are playing strong..and i will tell you i dont like giving you the 6 at all nor the breaks..you break like king kong..(considering i made the nine once and the six once)

Having a top shooter tell me that people around Richmond are talking about my game and that he wouldnt give me the six ball in a match really made me feel great. Dave is a great guy and a jam up shooter. he is a huge credit to the game of pool. Also he wanted to check out my Varney Break cue..hahah

twice in pool

the two I remember with a smile:

One night I won a tournament match, and my opponent said, "no way I could beat you; you were shooting like God".....to me, that's the ultimate compliment....

Once, I went over to Dave Piona's house (God rest his soul), to help him with some electrical problem, and afterward we shot a little on his table....He hadn't seen me shoot before, and when I made a tough cut shot along the rail, he smiled really wide (like only he does) and said, "Gee, Marv, I didn't know that about you".....That, to me was a genuine compliment....

Playing Gary Pinkowski in the Saturday tournament in Binghamton, NY. I'd just three-rail kicked for a return safety. "Look at this guy, I put him in the trenches and he still hits 'em!".

Owner of the place I was playing in a bar table tournament: "He don't say nothin before the match or after. He just goes out there and beats 'em!".

Willie Mosconi told me that I "had potential" when I was like 16. I don't know what the hell happened to it, but I guess I might have had it at one time. He was probably just being nice.

Hal Mix told me the same thing around the same time. Heh. Another sucker with no vision of the future! :D

Maybe they saw my potential as a software developer and they were really telling me to hang up the pool cue! Now that I think of it, they never really told me what it was that I had potential for.

When I beat Johnny Archer in a tournament and he shook my hand and said "good shooting," even though he did follow it up with that he "gave me too many chances." Both statements were true that day. But, winning that match made my day.

Anybody ever here of a guy named Mark Tadd?

I 2 rail kicked into the tightest safety ever during a tournament last year. Mark was playing next to me and said, "that was a real strong shot!"

This was an excellent compliment because Mark was/is the coolest pool player ever.

A friend tell me after several racks....

"Can you play with your left hand for the next set?"

Wow, Tate's comment about applause reminded me of something I haven't thought about in years.

My family owned a pub in England when I was a kid & that's where I started playing. One quiet Monday night there was a group of German tourists drinking in there & watching us locals play. Every time I won a rack they'd start clapping, I really didn't know quite what to make of it!

My dad was less impressed when he discovered they'd stolen all the coasters & ashtrays from their table on the way out!

My First Answer Was MUSTARD..... ( I thought it said 'condiment )'

What is the greatest compliment someone has given you?

When I leaned over to make a shot, someone in the crowd (maybe Jude Rosenstock) whispered, "he was SO fat in the stomach, but that's all behind him now."

Doug
( at least I 'think' it was a compliment )

Buddy Hall told me "you'd be tough to beat on a bar table if you'd wait to till the set is over before ordering drinks to celabrate":o Johnnyt

Or, "You Are The MOST Annoying Person I've Ever Met"

She said something like "OH GOD! That was incredible, my legs are still shaking!!"

:p

That's very similar to my greatest compliment, "get off me, I can't breathe"..... imo
Doug

Now that's a real compliment!

Youre right. That makes all other compliments pale by comparison.

one to remember

It was back in the latew 60's, Whatever year John Shupett (spelling?) otherwise known as omaha john won the BCA masters. We were playing 300.00 and up a game bar box last pocket eight ball in wisc. The session lasted about eight or so hours until the bar closed on sunday at midnight. I ended up a couple of games and John remarked that if there was a way to win I found it. A nice complement coming from a very good player and good guy. Not to long ago EX best player from minnesota told me that I beat him in a trick game - is this a trick game ????? the only rules were that if either of our last balls were made by accident or on purpose we were able to select any pocket on the table as our last pocket. Any thoughts on these rules?

Not really a compliment but....

When I thought I was real good, the local pool room pro told me if I practiced hard I had the potential to be the best out of my group of friends, so I better study hard and go to college
