What is up with the BCA's & Desrimination?

just because they are slow, doesn't mean they are at a lower level. that is a pretty broad assumption on your part.

This was not really my assumption but the assumption made by a few posters earlier in the thread. I also believe, this is the original assumption made by the BCA and the reason for the shorter race in the first place. For what other reason do you think Women play shorter races in this or any event? My entire point is that this is no longer the case...that overall the level has risen.

When people on this thread have talked about women playing slower, I thought they meant, because they see the skill level as being lower (some have said this) not just because of "slow play"...In my experience actual slow play has nothing to do with gender.

Forgetting about gender for a moment, if two true skill level 3's played a race, it would most likely take longer than say two skill level 6's or 7's playing the same race...I think most would agree to this. This is what I thought we were all talking about?

I am sorry if I did not make myself clear. Please keep in mind, I am just responding to the comments, so if I repeat myself, that is why. Sure, I am passionate, that is just my nature... I am just not one to sit around and hope something that is broken fixes itself.

Women's races

When we decided to have the "QLYMPICS", we said we were going to try and "just do what we do in May" - meaning the races and entry fees and all of that would be the same. This makes it easier to see if the teams are qualified etc. Remember - most of this event is on 9' tables.

We expect all of the matches to take longer than they do in May - after all, May is on 7' tables and most of the Qlympics is on 9' tabales. The goal is to create more 9' leagues and 9' players, and still support the 7' players, too.

When we took over the league, the women raced to 8. We immediately increased that to 10 - and have now increased it to 11. The men go to 13. I have always supported longer races for the women.

This is an experiment (although a very expensive one). We are guaranteeing at least $20,000 added money (up to $64,000 with full fields) in the US Open events. And there will be another $32,000 added on the amatuer side (with full fields). The entries are just starting to come in - after all, it is pretty early in the league year.

Bottom line, I do not think we can change the May races from 4 to 5. There are many women (and some men) who just play slow. However, at the QLYMPICS, we won't have those large fields and we can possibly try longer races. If there is enough time and if the women agree, we would consider extending the races. Remember, QLYMPICS has 9' events and a 7' event (on the last weekend).

This event will have somehting for everyone. I am hoping the players come out and support it. We are relaxing the Scotch Doubles requirements - you no longer have to be from the same league. Hope to see everyone there.

i have been vocal about my opinion on this matter and won't put anymore energy into it after this response. the one thing to keep in mind is that the tours and organizations have no idea people are unhappy with them unless you voice those concerns TO THEM DIRECTLY - the forums are great for discussion, but if the powers that be are not aware of what is happening, you have no resolution.

you mentioned in your last sentence that you are not one to sit around and hope something that is broken fixes itself - if you do not direct your concerns to the appropriate persons, you are spinning your wheels. the tours/organizations don't know people are unhappy unless the players share that information with them. the only way they know of a problem is if they either had lower turn outs at an event or a complaint was sent in to them. the advantage you have had in this instance is that Mark Griffin happens to be an AZ member and can address you directly and for me, his comments are appreciated.

I guess I'll give another female opinion. I do see all sides of this argument, but I can't see a problem with us having the same race as the men. Lord knows that I want as much play time as I can get. It is easy for me to say that though, because my style of play is not slow. I think that there are slow players in any tournament, and if it becomes a problem then a shot clock should go into effect. I realize that that could be hard to do, but maybe it should just be unspoken. A ref isn't called over to look at his watch every time someone calls time out in the team event, right? No, the teams just know better and keep up with it on their own.

Sorry, but your the one who is not getting it. Sure, some of the women's matches take longer and so do plenty of the mens. But lumping ALL women into the same group, because some may be at a lower level is just plain wrong. Just as I would not judge all the Mens seniors by the ones I watched while waiting for my table, who's first game ran over 30 minutes.

My first entire match, only took 30 minutes. I had one hill-hill match and we were still done in under an hour. I would bet one of the reasons Melinda sat around waiting, was because she finished early, not just because the others were behind....? Maybe OMGWTF or Melinda could chime in, with there actual match experience...how long did they take, just out of curoisty? Aside from that, the entry fee has nothing to do with the time spent on tables, we pay additional green fees, via dollars in the table for every game played..

Which brings up another point...adding even just the 1 extra game on the winners side (which could be 2 in a H/H match), would also bring in increased revenue for the BCA.

Well, I didn't around waiting because I finished earlier... I would go down to my table at the time scheduled and would be waiting for an opponent. Obviously, this didn't happen for every match, but did occur sometimes.

Hey Mark, I'll play as your partner as long as you don't wear that flourescent orange polo shirt that glows, even in daylight! :D Or maybe that would be a good shark tactic... Hmm...

Glowing shirt?

That might be one of the best offers I have had. Funny, I had MORE comments on that shirt than ever before. Dr. Cue tried to bribe me out of it!!! I am really color blind - and now everybody believes me.
