What pool cue to own if you just wanted to impress...

I never bought a cue to impress others, I bought cues that impressed me, both in playability and looks.

Oh I agree whole heartedly Brian, in fact some seemingly made for just aesthetic appreciation alone apparently. Saw a beautiful cue at a show that weighed a whopping 23.5 oz due to the amount of ivory & when I commented on this to the cue maker he replied it didn't matter, no one is buying that cue to play with which left me walking away scratching my head in wonder.

My comment was aimed at the premise of the OP, not buying a cue to appreciate its art but to IMPRESS OTHERS, I can't wrap my head around that motivation. Perhaps it's because I can't understand why people care about impressing others, to each his own.

Do like I did. Buy one of these cues and tell people that it's a real Balabushka.
I showed my girlfriend one and she said. "Cool, when do we eat?"
I also told her that today was 'National Have Sex With Balabushka Owners Day', and she said. "Cool, when do we eat?"

I think pros are most impressed by the cue you just beat them with. Bangers quiver at the sight of a Schön. It's the middle ground that's confusing.

I don't think anyone quivers at a Schon. I think for an impressive cue it would either be a level 5 Tim Scruggs, Mike Cochran,Bill McDaniel or Black Boar.

It is difficult to impress others with a cue.

As one user already stated, most players know little about cues and can't tell one from another.

I play with my cues and never worry bringing them to the hall because nobody knows the difference between one of my PFD's and a $150 production cue.

Even if that was not the case, players have such varied tastes that what is beautiful, desirable, or impressive to one person, is unattractive to another.

Probably 80% of the cues I see, I would not own and I know that to some, not one of my cues is attractive.

I'm only impressed by how a person plays with a cue. Not how it looks or how much it costs.

If I see you running racks with a house cue I am IMPRESSED.

If I see you banging with a Szamboti, I'm not IMPRESSED.

There is a top player at my local room who always shoots with a house cue. I love to watch him play.

Okay, Okay, let's end this now
Want to impress the top half of the spectrum? Get this and head down to Derby wearing a "Vince" T-shirt and get into all the action you can with the heavy hitter for some large paper. I GAA RAN TEE everyone will be talking about you and this cue for years
Or
Want to impress the lower half of the spectrum? Get this and head to the Expo or Reno or where ever you can find the largest congregation of banger/jump by lifting the ball/why did he just roll the ball there (after the break)/WHAT DO YOU MEAN FOUL, I TOUCH THE BALL! And jump on ever empty table you can find with this line when someone comes "oh you guys are playing here? My bad I was just warming up, I thought I was playing here". They'll write songs about you my friend and those songs will be sang at ever taver from Scandinavia to Valhalla

Wrong. 99% of pool players have never heard of those "wonder cues" you speak so highly of.

I am impressed with a custom cue from a cuemaker I have heard about but havent had a chance to play with yet.

I lived in Memphis and one pretty strong player had a Dennis Dekmen (sp?) cue.

Obviously, he let me play with it and I liked it, but I always like trying out different cues.

I have seen tons of Southwests, and Schons, and Meuccis, but seeing something out of the ordinary impresses me.

WTH...You cant post that and then dont leave an explaination.....

IM IMPRESSED

Ken

Thanks.
Here goes. For years I strugg with hiw to design "my" cue, I have nothing against regular cues but felt that for the most part they kind of all look the same or similar with the linen wrap and the points. The only difference being dropping some serous bread on something like a samsomora (sorry forgot the spelling, on my phone, blah blah blah).

I not only wanted a cue that was "mine" but also captured something. So with my love for pool I came up with this "or that, lol". A tribute to the classic cue makers, the butt is a Palmer and the top a bushka, then instead of little pieces of wood making up vaneers I wanted blocked of it so that anyone looking at it down the road can see the exotic types of woods that went into a cue. That's the finished product with two shafts one maple and one laminated, and one with an ivory ferrel.

Well that speaks loudly on the current state of pool then. A travesty.

Except for this pool forum and a few mags that are not for sale anywhere. Where would the general public receive their information on the contemporary pool scene?
