What shoots like the old Meucci's

Back when I first joined the Navy in the early 90's I bought a Meucci Original from the local pawn shop in Charleston, SC and held my own, then got married had a family and spent the next 20 years going to sea. Fast forward to a year ago, I retired from the Navy, kids are mostly grown, decided to start shooting pool again. I have tried several lower end cues, in my price range, and can't seem to find anything that compares with the old Meucci. I hear that they don't make them like they used to and don't want to waste that kind of money on something I won't be happy with either. Currently I'm playing with an older Player's sneaky(without butt cap) with a straight shaft new ferrule with a Tiger Everest tip, I play "OK" with this setup but I can't control the White ball like back in the day. I have spent a BUNCH of time reading on here and would like any recommendations of a cue that will play like my old Meucci Original and last awhile, and not cost an arm and a leg.

Welcome to Az! Go to the for sale section and you may find an old Original. They are out there somewhere. Good luck.

I think it's not the cue stick that causes this problem. Can you describe a specific position shot that is far more difficult for you now that it used to be 20 years ago?

chillipepr,

Welcome to the forums and THANK YOU for the many years of service you gave in protecting my freedoms!!!

The Wanted/For Sale section should help you find either an old, original Meucci or something that plays very similar to one.

I tried a few cheap McDermotts and found they played close with a soft tip. I came back after a 20 year layoff and discovered the game had changed, though.

One of the reasons your cue ball control may be off might be because of the different equipment being used now. The faster cloth and plastic balls react differently than the old, slower wool cloth and mud balls. I switched to a stick that wasn't as whippy as a Meucci and regained the control with less stroke effort.

Years ago, pool used to be more of a contest of power and who could get the best position by having a stronger stroke. Today, the fast cloth and live rails allows the cue ball to travel with little effort. The livelier balls play differently and learning how to hit them again will take some time.

Nothing like an old Meucci on a bar rag playing ring 9 ball...

Best,
Mike

Contact poolguy4u. I was going to buy an Original from him but decided not to get a Meucci Original. He has alot of them and his communication is great.

The closest I have found is a Judd cue....More money though...Efren use to play with this cue...

FWIW only because I haven't seen this posted yet. I would avoid any newer meucci's at all costs. I have a 336 and it plays like ass. It doesn't hit a ton. It doesn't even hit half a ton. Extremely whippy hit it's just not my thing. Opinions will vary though. It just feels like im shooting with plastic.

I have two for sale on page 13 of the wanted/forsale forum.
Meucci origionals MO-1 1/2 & 84-7

A little more than I am looking this spend at the moment, and the cues are a little fancy for me, mine was the plain Jane type. Just would like to know what to be on the watch for as I'm out at the local pawn shops and eBay...
Also if I put a new shaft on my player or have my shaft modified would it make a difference?

As far as im concerned there is nothing that plays like a
Meucci Origional so dont waste your money on anything
but a real Origional. Good Luck :thumbup2:

My advice would be to forget the past. Get the best cue you can afford and get used to it. Everything you once knew and could do will come back. It justs takes time.

Yes, put an OB shaft or other LD shaft on your Player and it will change your pool game for life. Time to step it up and use the best you can... which is a LD shaft imho........
