I'm about to purchase a new break cue, and I have choice of getting a shaft with a phenolic tip, or upgrading to a predator shaft (314 or 'Z') and have them install a Tiger Everest, Tiger Sniper, or a Moori tip.

I've tried phenolic and I really don't like the hit, but I like the fact that you'll never have to replace the tip. And since I never (or rarely) do jump shots, I don't need a phenolic.

So my question is, "What tip would you recommend that's the next best thing to getting a phenolic"?

Mezz Press Ingot tip doing great for me. Hard hit but softer than phenolic to have a better cueball control

First of all, you don't want to DOWNgrade your breakcue with a 314 of Z shaft. The second, you can try Tiger Hard. Moori Q is also a good choice.

I also like to break with the LePro, but these are not made consistent (vary from hard to soft), and it's a personal preference.

dip any tip in thin superglue. works really well

I've done this (for friends who liked super hard tips). Great initial results but it seemed to soften up over time.

If you want to stay with leather, you could try a Milkdud (pretty much what Varney recommended with the soaked tip).

But, I recommend taking a look at the White Diamond. It is hard than leather, but has less of a ping noise than phenolic. I am still pretty suprised how well it breaks.

I second the White Diamond. Gives you phenolic power with almost leather accuracy and much less of a "glass on glass" sound...

Mezz pressed ingot or white diamond. if your wanting a leather tip i like the tiger break tip.

The White Diamond is the stone cold nuts, it holds chalk about 50 times better than phenolic and breaks like a motherfather

are you sure this is a break cue your talking about? you really don't want to be using a 314 or a Z for breaking. they don't have the stronger taper that the BK shaft does, plus they are hollow in the front. in addition the sniper and everst tips are medium tips for playing, not breaking. should double check your info on that. if its just a normal cue your going to be using for breaking, then stick to the standard shaft and go with white diamond.

Muellers tip section has hardness ratings. The Talisman Xhard is about as hard as any leather tip and they play great. I like them for breaking and/or regular play.

I like my White Diamond as well, it's really efficient.

For me, the sound took some time to get accustomed: Even from a moderate break, the sound is like cracking a whip. Definitively noticable throughout the hall ;-)

I'll say this...I haven't had the opportunity to really try a bunch of different tips. But I wanted to have my Mace that I had at the time retipped, and I asked my local guy what was the hardest leather tip he had. He said he had Hercules Hard.

Again, I don't know how it compares with all the other stuff out there, but that sucker was HARD. I had people ask me "you're sure this is leather right?" My Mace was a cannon with the Hercules tip.

another vote for white diamond, also a water buffalo HD tip would be an option.

I know most people don't like them but I have recently switched break cues I had a stinger (made in the uk) and changed 2 days ago to a bunjee with a phenolic tip/ferrule, and this sucker breaks like a monster and I love it.
