What TIP TOOL(S) Can'tchya Live Without?

1) Name it.
2) Who makes it/where can you get it?
3) What does it do (if not obvious)?
4) Why can'tchya live without it?
5) Street price.
6) Anything else you feel the need to add.

Thanx! -Z-

Lol here is my piece, true story:

1) Willard Dime Shaper
2) Willard, most billiard supply place carries it
3) Yes, it does do the obvious lol
4) Because I have no talent in shaping a tip into a dime, if I use a sander, my tip might look like a knuckle lol
5) for a dime? lmao  $5-less
6) I can't live without it, I am addicted to it, give me a dime

How about you answer it as well and participate homie!

Happy shooting! :)

Chalk.

I haven't touched my tip with any kind of tip tool since I put on the tip a few years ago. I dressed it on the lathe a week or two after I initially put it on, and I think I may have dressed once last year for some odd reason.

The Cue Shark. Just picked up at the SBE. It has a dime and nickel shaper, a tip tapper, a container for powder, and holds a piece of chalk on the inside. Perfect all-in-one tool. I spent $50 on it and love it already.

:eek::eek::eek:

I have never seen or heard of it, sounds like I am going to spend $50 haha. Care to post a pic or where I can get one other than the expo? Thanks

Most are kind of goofy and contrived. I just use sand paper and occasionally a file.

i keep it simple

willard dime shaper for shape,
q-wiz for its rewashable 2-grit sandpaper purpose for shaft cleaning and light tip scruffing

Tip pic

See tip pic, Willard Shaper, and others here:

http://www.billiard-zone.com/accessories_cue_care.htm

Also available at just about any other billiard supplier (Mueller's, Seyberts, etc.).

Press the tip pic into the tip with just enough force to help the tip hold chaulk. You're not drilling for oil, just giving it a little tickle. I also have a Willard Shaper, but I rarely use it, especially on layered tips.

Only one tip tool:

Willard's Nickel shaper.
Available wherever Willard shapers are sold.

Well, maybe I do have a Tip Tapper around somewhere, but I can't find it.

I'm similar to Fred on this one. I try not to touch my tip as long as it doesn't turn glassy on me. If I've miscued a couple of times or it just doesn't seem to hold chalk as well as I'd like, I'll run some sandpaper over it to rough it back up, but that's about it.

That said, talking to Mika Immonen at the Mezz booth at SBE this past weekend, he pulled out a tip tool that he said he picked up in Japan. It was about a 2x3 inch piece of wood with a very fine microfile surface on one side. He took it out to rough up a tip on one of the demo cues, and I was thoroughly impressed. It roughed up the tip, but didn't seem to change the shape or take much material off at all. I never got the chance to ask him how I could get my hands on one. If anyone on here can hook me up, I'll buy one for you when I buy mine!

1) Dave Bollman
2) His parents made one years ago/Virginia Beach, VA
3) Shapes my tip on a lathe
4) Because he does it cheap and professionally
5) $0 if you catch him on a good day
6) If you get your tip shaped on a lathe (they press in while it's spinning I guess, no cutting involved) it's uniform and even. I was told to have my tip shaped by a cueman since scuffers aren't very friendly with layered tips. I only shoot with snipers.

Ive used an ultimate tip tool for years, but I heard the company that made it went out of business. I think it cost me like 10 bucks when I got mine. It has a nickel and dime shaper, mushroom burnisher, tip tapper, and sandpaper to try to sand mushrooms off, but that part is useless.

I agree. The only tool needed is a lathe. If you can't afford or have no room for one then very slight use of a tip pick. I feel that sandpaper and scuffers have no place in ones cue maintenance kit. They do nothing but wear off a month or two worth of tip on each usage. Tips shape themselves to your style of playing. Why try to change it? If you use a lot of English your tip will be very rounded, if you use little English, your tip will be flatter.

To not lean to one side, you'll need to put something heavy in your other pocket

www.cueshark.com

Let me know what you think. I love it, it does everything I need to do on a tip.

metallicane:

Hmm... with that thing in your pants pocket, you seem to be leaning to that same side. Here, let me help you... <slips an unopened can of Campbell's soup in the opposite pants pocket> Ah, there you go! Now that the weight on both sides of your body has been equalized, you appear to be walking perpendicular to the ground again! And, you now look symmetrical again -- like you're carrying two cans of soup, one on each hip! :D :D :D

Sorry, couldn't resist!

metallicane - glad you like your cueshark - good to hear.
and,
Sflein - thanks for the new slogan... 'MMMmm mmmm good for your tip'. HAHA...
Just FYI - the cueshark is not THAT big, and is designed to fit comfortably in your hand.
