What to do with this cue?

Just recently after letting my mom know I would be with my dad's side of the family for Christmas her and her bf state that they want to give me my gift ahead of time since I won't see them the day of. Since they don't know much about pool at all they think those cues from stores like Walmart and swap meets are generally used cues. I can clearly appreciate the thought of it but would feel horrible telling them the cue isn't worth much to me after seeing their faces thinking they had bought me something I really liked. Even my cheap $40 cue is better though and I have no idea what to do with the cue they gave me.

I'll admit just the butt is cool cuz the light when it gets bumped but I don't see how functional it really is

You keep it because
#1- it was a gift from your mom.
#2- it was bought out of love. From your MOM.
Just saying.

I used to play in a weekly tournament in a crazy dive bar in Espanola New Mexico called Red's Steakhouse. One of the other regulars in the tournament was an ancient biker named Old Man Henry. He was a pretty sporty player and had a silly old budweiser cue with balls floating in the butt just like yours. It was kinda awesome how well he played with such a crappy cue. Were I you I would have someone replace the shaft or just the ferrule with something playable and use it as a prop when you go out to places where no one knows you.
 
It can make for a great hustler cue .
Blow torch the joint screw.
Core it with rosewood. Install a new joint screw.
Replace the shaft with an ugly looking unmatched no collar hard maple and a good ferrule/tip combo.

Take it out, play with it, get some photos of you playing with it. Send photos to your mom.

A few months from now, it gets stolen when you go to the bathroom and everybody is happy.

Agree 100%. Also I'd like to add that taking pictures of yourself using the cue is an excellent idea. Post it on facebook or whatever. They will love it.

I think it's a fun challenge as well, to see just how many balls you can run with a cheap cue. I've been looking on Ebay for one of those 5 piece, carved cues, because I thought it would be awesome to run some balls on video with one of those. Really stick it to the cue-snobs:D. Run 50 and post it in the 14.1 forum, put it in the cue gallery forum as well!:D

Come on. That's a nice gift. I agree with those saying pics for your mom and keep it.

It could have been worse. When I was sober 90 days (19 years ago) my parents took me out to dinner. Dessert comes and they got me a cake to celebrate. A RUM cake!! Hehe. True story.
 
i would take mikes advise if I were you. he is one of the best cuemakers around. a gift from mom, maybe you will have a kid to give it to someday. hi mike, hope you are doing well. cue is just beautiful. jim and sue
 
Yep, keep it even if you don't play regularly with it. Send pics to Mom of you playing with the cue.

Someday in the distant future that cue will bring you fond memories of your mom and her love for you!

Put a hard tip on it and use it as a break cue.

It'll play no worse than any other cue once you put a good tip on it, except maybe for how it feels to you. You might come to prefer it!

First off, we have to award points to Mom for trying. She knows pool is an interest of yours and wanted to get you something for that. Gotta' grade on a curve here. Last year as a stocking stuffer I got some of the Mizerak screw-on tips with ferrules.....for my Joss. She didn't know and I didn't say anything derogatory. They're still in my desk drawer. I'll never use them, but I wont give them away either.

Lastly, I'm blown away the Minnesota FATS (Why this is in all caps is beyond me) line is still in business considering the dude died over 20 years ago.
 
When I was about sixteen, what I really really wanted was an Acushnet putter, and my mom got me one for Christmas.

I gave up playing golf when I got a serious job that took away my free time. Naturally, I gave away my clubs over the years and, naturally, I threw away the Acushnet. YEAH! You can bet on that! I threw it into the fancy stand that holds my old squash and tennis racquets and fishing rods and is next to the fireplace in my study, and it lives there happily even today, near me every minute that I spend at my desk. And that Christmas was a long, long time ago.
