what type of wood is this?

I have a couple of oak Titlists and I agree that it's probably oak, although better pictures could remove all doubt. The other possibility is ash. Here are pics of one of mine to use as a reference.

I just came back from a long weekend, so I didn't get a chance to take high resolution pix, these pix are from the auction, hope they'll show better.

Do you guys know what was the story behind the "Hoppe" signature? It's different from my other titlists.

Thanks,

This is a first edition signature. Note the differences in the 'W' and the 'H' specifically. Not exactly rare, but not nearly as common as the ubiquitous "other" signature type.

I remember seeing a website with all titlists described in chronological order, do you happen to have it?
Now I need to find purpleheart and ebony.

I think you're talking about this site. I haven't been there in quite a while, but I seem to recall that the information presented is not entirely correct. Specifically in the area of dating the labels IIRC, but it's a good guide.

My understanding is that would mean the wood is oak.

Do you have info to verify?

Hi Dale. It's still possible that it's ash. I have 3 oak Titlists and one ash, and all four have the first edition signature.

Ok, I know how much everyone loves pictures, so here are some pics of my 3 oak Titlists on the top, and my ash Titlist on the bottom. Ash grain tends to be very straight, while oak can have some "character." You be the judge. There's a lot of history in these cues. If only they could talk . . .

What a amazing collection you have there, Mr.Hoppe!
How many titlists/hoppe cues you have in total?

Is ash harder to find than oak?

What's the order of rarity? ebony, brazilian rosewood, oak, purpleheart?
