What wood for a 1 piece, solid butt???

If you were to build a 29" one-piece butt out of a solid piece of wood, which would you pick for stability (least chance of warpage), weight (for a 20 oz. cue), balance (18.5" from buttcap), and your preference in hit.

Joint will be flat faced w/ steel collar and steel 3/8x10 pin.

If a rosewood, what species?

Purpleheart but I'd have a maple dowel the last 5 inches.
Thin SS collar, brass or ss pin, fat forearm and skinny handle.

To get that weight without a huge weight bolt I would use cocobolo and as far as stabilitly goes make sure the cue is cut very slowly like over at least 1 year.

I'm looking for a medium brown wood. I dont mind using a weight bolt to achieve the desired weight and balance. Would pau ferro or goncalo alves be a good choice?

I reccomend shedua. It's medium brown with a gold shimmer. It's super stable, tonal and will require only a little weight if any. Curly shedua would be even better. I'm actually working on one now.

Bocote would be a good choice. East indian rosewood is always great for this kind of application.

I've made dozens of these Qs using BACOTE. the lighter colored pieces are generally also lighter in weight. You do have a problem, in that you have a joint bolt that weighs an ounce & a joint collar that weighs a little over an ounce That is going to make it hard to get that weight(20 oz.), with that balance point. I would use an aluminum 3/8x10 joint screw & then weight the back, til you get the 20 ounces. That way the balance point will be close to where you want it...JER
 
Any of you cue maker ever tried ebony and can a full solid ebony butt achieve a 21oz? Would it be stable? tks

Again, if you are stuck on this screw & joint colar will have a large amount of weight at the front. It will be hard to get the cue to balance at 18.5" from the butt cap...JER

Thanks for the responses. As far as the joint collar and pin are concerned, the collar could be one of those super thin ones (i.e schuler cues) and the pin material could be whatever material would achieve the desired weight and balance. I just like the look of steel.
 
i have one that is solid Curly Maple and one that is solid Macassar Ebony sapwood.the Macassar has a grey streak that looks like a butterfly splice but it is the natural wood.both cues play great.the Maple cues weighs 18.5 with a 1oz weight bolt and the Macassar cue weighs closer to 20oz.both are also for sale for $300 shipped.the Curly Maple cue is a beautiful piece of maple and made by Brian Fischer and the Ebony cue is made by Ned Morris.

Is the ebony cored? any pict? tks
 
Bubinga, Yellow Heart, Indian Rosewood, Shedua, Pau Ferro, Purple Heart, Wenge, and light colored Bocote all make nice stable one piece butts.
 
no pics but it is a dark piece of solid Macassar Ebony with one greyish colored streak at the butt which is the sapwood.3/8-10 pin and an olivewood insert in the shaft as most all of Ned's cues have.dark tan phenolic collars and butt cap.Moori medium tip an dthe shaft is 13mm.the cue was bought here at AZ about 6 months ago so a search may result in some pics.
