What would be the ultimate 1 Pocket match?

None of the players of yesteryear could compete with the current top one pocket players. I have seen them all including Ronnie Allen in his prime and the old guys just couldn't run the balls this new group does. Just look at how the top 20 or so bank, move defensively, and run balls. It's simply amazing. Now there is one old player who I did see play who might be able to stay close with this new crop and that would be Bugs Rucker in his prime. He could bank out of trouble better than anyone I ever saw and this edge would keep him close. But in the end even his banking abilities couldn't stop the barrage of ball running this new group possess. Look at what Shane just did to Efren in their TAR match. Come on, really, he just dominated Efren in one pocket. There are several others who might do the same in match play. If were are talking about playing on the current tables, balls and cloth I just don't see any yesteryear players coming close.

This is rubbish. You're talking about a primed Shane Van Boening against a seasoned 60-year-old Efren Reyes. Gimme a break. Do you think Shane would have beaten a primed Efren Reyes? Or in the alternative, do you think a seasoned Shane Van Boening will beat the lastest pool flavor in 2044?

I don't really care who beats who, but your post is flawed big time.

There are several differences between the players of today and in the past. Efren is in the top 10 right now and he might beat any player in match play. But I think Shane just plays better RIGHT NOW. He is actually learning the game while he's winning and his game is going to improve each time out. Same goes for Alex, Dennis, Busty and a host of others. Scott's game is down right now and probably if he took up pool seriously again it would come back and he might be the best player again. But the original post had to do with the players back in the day and I still think this crop of players are the best.

Amazed that no one mentions Shannon.
Shannon vs Efren at Galveston is a great match.

Shannon,Jeremy,SVB ,Frost,and Alex.
Round Robin.2 play the other 3 commentate.{With or without,Mr. Re-position}:D;)

Ronnie

I have all the respect in the world for Efren ,but to say he would destroy Ronnie .Ronnie Allen ? Ronnie ran more 8n9 out than anyone.he probably ran out one handed more than the mentioned players.Dig him up for 9-7.

One pocket match of all matches:

I would like to see Grady Mathews in his prime, playing Cornbread Red in his prime.

Cross-Side-Larry

"Learn from the best, and outplay the rest"

Scott Frost
Alex P.
SVB
Efren.

Round robin format, $1k a rack. Play till only one guy has money left in his pocket.

Can't go wrong here. I might throw in Justin Hall, too, who split his two one pocket matches with Frost at the Derby.

I'd say scratch Alex off the list as well. He's not playing anytime soon. He's playing poker again full time. Has been for awhile.

Ronnie more versatile?? no way -- Efren definitely has proven his versatility with all kinds of all-around and different discipline titles. not even close, unless you are talking one-handed.

But while we are on the "what if" topic -- how about what if Efren had been playing One Pocket since his teens, like Ronnie did. again, no contest!!

I've seen Ronnie and Efren in their prime...and have great respect for
both of them....and I much prefer Efren's demeanor.

But I've seen Ronnie do tremendous things...like play short-stops even-up
....with Ronnie shooting one-hand......I know you are eliminating one-hand
...but man! it's hard not to mention that Ronnie had a chance at running
10 at 3-cushion with one hand.

If they met on a 6x12, Efren would not have liked it at all....Ronnie beat
number 8 in the WPBSA at pay-ball 3 times...and spotted him 3 with
three reds on Joe Burns' 5x10 for another win.

He beat Cicero at straight pool....and bet all his cash on the side.

Like Efren, he changed the game of one-pocket...they were very
conservative back then.

It's so hard to get into the 'what ifs', 'cause they are from different eras
....but what a fine one-pocket match they would have made.

The ultimate match for one pocket would be to offer a single prize of $250,000.00 to the one and only champion.... winner take all. Open it up to anyone and everyone that wants in and hold it in Nashville or some other centrally located state. Single-elimination, race to 9 tournament.

Guaranteed, the last match played would be the greatest match of all one pocket history. Everyone else goes home broke.

Eddie Taylor ( Knoxville Bear ) would of been a very difficult player for anyone to beat. He banked better than anyone & ran balls so easily & always knew the right shot.

The ultimate 1p matchup

Would be Efren vs Efren. That's it! I mean we are all making a bunch of what ifs right? Lol
