Dean,
Friendship is not something that one can bestow on another and it is always reciprocal to even qualify as friendship.
You do not take the other person's feeliins for granted, you do not mislead or offer false promises if you're a true friend.
You might have thought of yourself as this cue-maker's friend but actually, you were merely an acquaintence.....just one of many.
As such you owe him no special allegiance or obligation to shield him from being exposed just to protect other innnocent parties.
Nonetheless, doing something like that is a last resort and once you have rung that alarm bell, it can never be unrung by anyone.
You take this stuff seriously & besides, you're also a generous soul so adopting a hard line is something that doesn't sit well with you.
I would just lay it on the line one last time with the cue-maker., If I couldn't speak with him by phone, I'd send him an email or a registered letter.
Just let him know your forgiveness and understanding jar is empty and there's nothing left at this point aside from him just delivering the goods.
If there is any hesistancy or anything but complete contrition over what's occured so far and a commitment to deliver your cues fast,
then make sure he understands you will reveal all of this through the Az Forums and ask for help broadcasting this on social media pool forums.
Best of luck with whatever approach you use or decide to do. Ironically, when the cue-maker you use is not only talented but a standup type of guy,
you never experience problems of any sort even years later. I just spoke with Bob Owen today and he is just such a terrific guy to talk with 'bout anything.
We've developed a rivalry of sorts over the recent years with competing baseball teams; his being the KC Royals and of course, mine is the NY Yankees.
Sprng training is only a week away and so we exchanged opinions on baseball and even cue-making since I have the itch to have another cue design made.
My point in mentioning this is cue-makers like Bob Owen are becoming more rare and he is a man of his word when it comes to doing business.
So it really difficult to imagine how someone could earn a reputation as a great cue-maker when the individual isn't a great person at the same time.
In cue-making, greatness isn't solely measured by the final quality of the cue being completed.....it also encompasses a code of conduct & decency.
It sounds like the cue-maker in question has fallen woefully short in the latter categories which really overshadows any cues he has produced.
