What would you tell you Room/Bar Owner to do in 2008

I would tell Amsterdam Billiards in NYC to get decent house cues.

Sometimes I just want to play on a whim.

And I play in different places, so I don't want to store my cue in a locker there.

Fix horrendous table problems, which he has refused to do for over two years. Blames it on the players, ie: the problems are due to player error and not the tables. Despite the fact that no less than Shannon Daulton and Larry Nevel brought these problems to his attention.

Take leagues, or host small tournies yourself.

The place I play does neither of these, and as much as I like playing my friends for small change, I'd like to play something more competitive.

To make this Room/Bar a more player friendly place.

For one of the places near me:

  1. Relevel and recover the tables.
  2. Have leagues to help bring some people back.
  3. Relevel and recover the tables.
  4. Getting the stains out of the carpet wouldn't hurt.
  5. Relevel and recover the tables
  6. Have a weekly tournament that doesn't conflict with another in the area so you can work together.
  7. Relevel and recover the tables
  8. If you have a menu, make sure you have someone that knows how to cook the food.
  9. Relevel and recover the tables
  10. maintain the equipment.

Did I mention relevel and recover the damn tables?? LOL

I agree, but I would also add: relevel and recover the tables!

I think I see what you are getting at here.

The stains in the carpet need to be removed. :D Ok I get it!

:D I have to spread some more rep around first

Yeah, pretty much the owner is giving up and doesn't want to deal with it anymore. It's a shame because places to play on 9 ft tables are few and far between around here.

Wonder if any room owner will take the hints.

Mostly, I'd say "keep up the good work," as amsterdam Billiard club is simply the greatest place in the world. Still, one change I'd like to see at the Amsterdam Billiard Club is the elimination of blues music, which sometimes goes on for hours at a time, and is almost reason enough to walk right out the door. I have yet to meet a customer that likes this music. I don't really mind blues music, and would be fine with it if it were played on an occasional basis, but played for hours on end, it rates as punishment for a crime not committed.

Whenever I would hear the words "Crime & Punishment" I would think of Truman Capote. No more.

SJM, I love light jazz myself. The Blues is fine as long as long as it's not ad naseum. But I don't think I've ever heard you complain about something like that before..."punishment for a crime not committed"

As I see it, you can...
A. Slip the disc jokey a fin and request he play....FILL IN THE BLANK.
B. Ask the owner if he's ever perused the forums at AZB, and be like "The Monk" and then "point the way" to this thread.
C. Get a clip board and write a petition up, replete with as many signatures as possible from Amsterdam's patrons requesting that the proprietor of the club donate his music collection to the HOF dinner room at the DCC. Or the local City Mission.
D. Invest in a large pair of ear protectors, like those worn by gun enthusiasts on the gun range, and wear them to the counter as you get the balls. Great conversation piece!

Happy New Year my friend! :)

I'll make you a deal SJM... Download all of the Blues Music off of the Juke box, and I'll DL all of the Rave/Godssmack/Rob Zombie/Spit off of our local jukebox and we will trade and have this be the only music allowed to be played :D

I am excited that Steve Leistekow is gonna be in the KC area and is giving the "Hard Times" treatment to at least 2 tables at Duff's owned Side Pockets (One at NKC, and The other in Lees Summit).

The other thing I would like to see is the promotion of more big table tournaments 9-ball/10-ball, 1-Pocket etc.

The place I play at was bought by some goof with no experience in pool.

He doubled the beer prices, raised the pool rates 50%, hired a bunch of ugly meth addicts to work for him, and immediately lost two thirds of the business coming in. Pool leagues left, most of the regular players stopped coming in, and most days there are maybe one to three players actually playing pool in a pool hall with 20 tables. Sad, real sad.

Just to kill off the last few old timers who still play there because the next pool hall is too far for them, he put in a new jukebox that has been cranking out nothing but rap and speed metal all day long. Every one over 40 leaves within 20 minutes every time.

Turn on some freakin' air conditioning. When I win the lottery and build my multi-million dollar pool room, it's gonna be about 60-65 degrees. Year round.

LOL, Joey. Your listed location speaks volumes on this occasion. If that's where I lived, I might like blues, too.
