What's a good game spot sl6 and sl8?

Apparently the SL6 is smart enough to not be a SL8.;)

I think the SL6 might have to give the 8 a ball.

2 on the wire would be easier to overcome than a ball spot IMO, but 7-last 3 sounds way out of line. The 8 seems doable, but I'd go with the call 8 just to make him work for it. Might make him break different chasing the 8 and give an edge of sorts.

I tend to play my friends APA races. It's already handicapped and I can widen the spot and give up an extra s/l or two. If you're doing heads-up, I'd say the 8. The 7-out is pretty heavy. APA 9b races don't always translate straight across to standard match-ups.

They give up the cal 8 in the tryny I run, and it works out pretty even. Of course, if you are a low 6 and he is a high 8, might need the call 7.

Nothing....

Probably the wisest answer, at least until it has been determined how strong they are at their current SL's. I've seen strong 6's that could walk all over some weak 8's, depending on what league area they're from.

It's 9 ball..

7 and the last three too much? Guy plays lights out.

Bar box table if that matters

i am a 5 and we have 2 8's in our sunday division.

one of the 8's i would take the 7 and the last 3 anytime. i dont care if its winner break, alternate break, rack your own, whatever. i like my chances.

the other 8 however... i would need the wild 5 and out, and all the breaks. still might not win, he is just that strong.

Start out even and then adjust if needed.

I agree, if anything just get the SL8 to start by giving a game and adjust as needed. You could have a 6 that's closer to a 7 and a weak 8 and the diffference is not much, just as you could have a 6 that's weak and closer to a 5 handicap and the 8 closer to a 9 then the weight needed is much more. I play some of the league players on the weekly tournaments and as a 9 I have to give some sixes 4 and the called 8 on a race to 7 and a few have never been able to beat me, but then there are some that I wouldn't give more than 1 and the called 8 or 2 games on the wire.

Since we are talking an APA sl8 we must be talking 9 ball. The player who has spent the least time playing APA style 9 ball will probably have the advantage. The point per ball scoring system, while serving to level the playing field, contaminates a players 9 ball game to the point that they will go after a harder run rather than riding an easy 9. You also don't have to win a single rack to win APA 9 ball, so the handicap might be artificially high for a guy who might have trouble with the last 2, or is a key shot choke artist.

I'd play a straight race to 5 even up to start. The 6 might be giving the 8 weight before the night is out.

I also might add that in the OP scenario I am the SL6.

I used to be an 8 in 9 ball, friend 6.
I had to give him 7 minimum, sometimes 6.
We were both strong for our handicaps.
Big difference in ability especially if you're on 9 footers.

IMO, that number doesnt mean shit outside of the apa.

When I was a SL8, I had SL9s asknig me for the 8, and I could have given it to them.

I have buddies that like to play their APA races with each other all the time.
The built-in spot is actually pretty reasonable. I believe 19 balls. Equivalent to 2 games on the wire.

Points per ball may not be your cup of tea, but IMO it's much more fair than traditional 9b.
An APA 6 is a coin flip to run 'em all on an open table with ball in hand,
and often will run 6ish balls and then miss, leaving the other guy to clean up.

Was playing 9 ball with an APA 6 just last night actually and on
3 or 4 occasions, he left us simple 2 and 3 ball outs.

This reduces the game to true gambling, meaning luck plays a big part.
If that's what you're looking for, have fun. But if you want to actually have a fair game where
the guy who shot better gets rewarded, points is better unless you want a long set.
