What's the best hitting cue? Some thoughts

If anybody is in the Los Angeles area, let me know. I have a couple of Brunswick one piece 26 1/2's that are lightly used (they're like new) with full shaft diameters. They're from the 1920's I would like to invite you to try them out. These cues have seasoned now for over 80 years and are still perfectly straight. This aging process and the one piece design, for some reason, give these cues a hit that cannot be duplicated.

finally a voice of reason, old wood cues play better as a general rule, one thing is they dont change much after they are 30 years old, wood younger than that can and will change, I have had cues made with green wood and they played great for a while then the wood in them changed and the hit of the cue changed. most of my older cues play better than my newer ones, the excepton being a Barry and a Sugartree.

I have one Gus with a origonal, Barry and Ginacue shaft and that cue is a dud-there aint no shaft gonna help that Gus, perhaps 20 years ago that cue hit'em good and changed-its one of the least expensive Gus's I have and for good reason, it is in very good condition but man it just dosent play. Guess thats why I got a deal on it. I love how it looks but man everyone who has plaed with it dosent like it.

Cues dont have to be expensive to play great I borrowed a Viking once in Salt Lake from a guy, i needed it for a game and didnt like the cue I had, I won and the guy wouldnt sell me that ugly orange cue for anything-to this day it is one of the best playing cues i ever hit a ball with,

its alot more than the shaft, the balance point, feedback, weight have little to do with a shaft and alot to do with how a cue plays everything is important. and more things than not, cant be explained about why cues play differently from one another,

The best in my opinion is Jeff Olney, and Sugartree.

I've not had the pleasure of playing with a Sugartree, or even seeing one in person. I consider the Olneys I've had to be right at the top of the heap though. However, last week I was lucky enough to get a Darrin Hill Rosewood sneaky here from "lenoxmjs" with a 3/8 X10 pin and a simple phenolic collar, a melamine ferrule, and a Le Pro tip. That cue plays as well as anything I've ever touched in my life. It does have a 4 oz shaft, but frankly, at first, I complained about it due to a little more grain runout than I prefer. Live and learn. I've played with it about 6 times now, and the last two times I got into the zone for a while each time. The cue didn't do that, but it allowed me to do that. It's a wonderful thing to find an instrument that will allow you to perform at your best. Kudos to Darrin Hill and Matt(lenoxmjs)...Tom

3 very good cuemakers you mentioned there.Cory Barnhart is another great somewhat new cuemaker you need to try out.

The other night during our pool league I thought someone walked off with my case and cues. My heart dropped a few inches and almost stopped. Thankfully it was just moved to a more secure area by a team mate that was sitting at that table. I thought about the loss that might have happened and decided to start using the "cheaper" cue that was my former player. After hitting a few balls with it I just didn't like the way it felt or the played. Decided to keep using my RC3 and keep it more secured.

All of my cues hit good but this one just feels better to me. It is probalby the cue that I am now use to.

I think Fatboy just nailed it.......

Currently I have 3 actually 4 very good hitting cues /KERSENBROCK,PRE-DATE SW AND SOLID HITTING CONVERSION WITH NO WRAP/but one of them just makes me love the game more and more every time I hit a ball.

My Viguera cue that's on my avatar.
Thank you so much Adrean for making my pool experience great.

P/S I'm putting for sale a crazy package deal for 2 very high demanding cues I have:
Gorgeous Kersenbrock and Twin-sister Pre-date SW with the same wood combo.

I agree with a lot of your reasonings.

In reality....a "perfect hit" is a combination of many things including

*Butt- (this is where we address the, "ego variable")
*Shaft Taper
*Tip

Once this comination is confirmed......"Confidence" and "Personal Opinion" are the cues fuel to the success.

Hand me a $10k SW and I will tell you it hits too hard....hand me a basic Black Boar and I'll never give it back. Put a Moori on that same Black Boar and I tell you to put it next to the SW.

My three personal "Greg's Best Hitter's"

#1 Black Boar + 4-PT + Ivory Ferrule + triangle Med/hd = MMMMMM

#2 McDaniel - Love at first sight-feel-hit....what a "Player"

#3 Mike Webb - Luv'm - These cues play awesome. (Mike should raise his prices so the cost would be equal to the hit quality.)

Love these threads.....

Let's get a ring game going!!

Isn't this kinda like asking "who is the best looking woman in the world"? It's fun and your bound to get dozens of answers but nobody is going to be 100% correct.

Oh, by the way Keeley Hazell IS The best looking...

My Pick ...

Possibly the best hitting Cue I have owned was a Hoppe conversion crafted by Paul Drexler (Pfd) several years ago ... It was turned down to modern specs, a solid Ivory Uni-loc Joint added, topped off with (2) matching Predator 314's and Moori III's ... The Cue played consistently well, then some rich guy offered me way too much money and it changed ownership ... Other than that particular Cue, I would say that every Alex Brick Cue and every (early) Custom Mike Sigel Cue I have owned all played consistently well, with a nice firm hit and NO "pings or rattles", EVER ... I currently play with a very high end Custom Alex Brick Cue (60") and it plays wonderfully ...

As I stated in an earlier post, defining "The Hit" is very subjective and opinions on the subject are too numerous to count ...

Simply stated, whatever feels "right" to YOU is probably the best hitting cue for YOU ...
