What's the best skill level for serious gambling?

When you're new to the game anyone will gamble with you but you suck and need a lot of weight.

When you get quite a bit better you can still find a lot of people to gamble with but you aren't the most consistent and probably don't have a lot of confidence in yourself.

When you get to be an A player you will mostly only be playing other A players but many of these people will be willing to bet a lot.

When you get to pro caliber many people won't play you without getting a lot of weight.

What do you think is the best time?

A good gambler has most if not all of these qualities -
- Plays the game well (obv)
- Knows how to negotiate the game and when to raise or lower the stakes (very important)
- Has $ OR has backers at will
- Knows when to talk and when to shut up
- Can play well in any condition (different table types and length, deal with heckling, adversity, rolls)
- Has samoan friends as backup
- Has a nickname like the magician, the lion, the freezer, the home wrecker etc
- Is Filipino (bonus points if you are this)

So watch out for Filipinos with Samoan friends. Check.

I can only speak for myself. I am a solid B player in that I can play respectably with almost anybody. I usually play A players and get weight. I am not a big gambler as far as dollars waged, but I do like to gamble what I can afford. I know most of these A players I wager with but I will play anybody even up if I don't know them because I know how much I can lose and know when to walk away or when to ask for an adjustment in the game. If you lose to a better player you should have learned something from watching that player. The way I wager I figure it is cheaper than a lesson if I take some knowledge away and I usually enjoy myself. I play better and concentrate more when I have some skin in the game. Sometimes I step up to an A game. I put two kids through school with no debt so I know the value of the money in my pocket and never get crazy with the wager. If you don't want to play cheaper sets, you don't want to wager with me.

Well said. Johnnyt

I had tons and tons of action every day for 15 yrs as a C player. I was pretty smart about it, and mostly played with D, C, and B players, adjusting weight accordingly.

A players hardly ever had action. I learned to stay away from them. There was no amount of weight they could give me to where I had a chance.

I like how honest you are with your skill level, almost everyone on here is an A player.

"YASSS" - in my best white girl voice.

IMO, numbers 2 through 5 are the most important. As you said, number 1 is obvious.

Gambling is a game in itself. You can be the best player on earth and be a bad gambler. As they say, it's not gambling if you do it right. Many times have I seen someone that is a world class salesman when it comes to matching up. They get spotted the world and can't lose, but make the other guy feel like he has the nuts.

Well isn't there a difference between a gambler and a hustler?

I'm a D player and I'll play 5$ a rack but only for people i can learn from.

In my view the best level would be pro level, for obvious reasons, but getting a game might be difficult.
Gambling can happen at any level, or age, for that matter. When I was a teenager we played Eight-Ball for a quarter a game, and quarters were hard to come by.

Some players will give you lots of weight, but want you to bet real high, to get you outside of your comfort zone. It can be a double edged sword. On one hand giving up alot of weight and out running them, is one of the best feelings ever. On the other hand getting a crap load of weight, and betting more than you're comfortable with, can mess with your head. If you focus to much on the $$, you've already lost.

Some like the pressure, others fold.;) Start lower, and work your way up.

IMO, the most important skill is being honest with your skills verses others and then using good negotiation skills to make sure you are not booking a loser.

The ability to walk away, before, during and afterward of booking a loser.

NEVER, EVER CHASE MONEY. I have won more money by "Letting someone get even" than most of the times I have won.

Finally, I think having a short memory and being able to shake off a bad roll, bad call, missing a shot, getting down a few games, etc. Some folks I have heard are what you call "Front Runners", if they get you down a few games, they continue to get better and better. But if you had them down the same number of games, they were done and can be beat much easier. These are my favorite guys to gamble with, as they are usually a little better than I am with playing skills.

"Grinders" IMO, are the toughest to gamble with for me. Those guys just stay solid and never let anything affect them. Get them down several games and they just "Grind" their way back a little at a time.

JMO, I wish you all the best of rolls.

While skills in matching up matter, the best skill level for serious gambling is a C player, from what I have seen.

We have a few C players in New Orleans that will bet enough to choke a horse. It seems that they not only have the gamble to bet high but the fact that their level of play is not very high, makes them attractive to the best players in the world. Not being able to run a rack has its privileges.

Johnny hit the nail on the head

i have never been a good player
possibly a D player

when I was the worse player in the room I got lots of action
Today there are few gamblers in Dallas
I wish i could come to New Orleans and play these guys who can not play that good

LOL

The guys down here, that do gamble, who can not play that good... play pretty good. I'll agree with Joey though, there are a few people that can't run 3 balls and will bet the world.
