What's up with the cueballs at the U.S. Open

Every tournament I play in, red circle cue balls are used.

What's all the crying about? :rolleyes:Oh that's right, these are pool players.

In my opinion, the red circle cue ball is a better ball.

I hate the red circle ball as it is the least like the rest of almost all sets of balls.

It's almost like playing on a coin table with the different cue balls of all different types until maybe the new ones.

It's lighter, a hair smaller & a different material so friction is different & it's bouncier.

The ONLY 'benefit' I see in it is that it is easier to draw so it's good for lesser players to have a bit more fun & enjoyment & maybe get them into a room more often.

Earl once almost dropped out of a tournament because he 'warmed up' for well over an hour & then went to play his match & blew up when the cue ball was a different ball.

Sorry for the rant.

How can an event with 10 or so tables not have the same equipment? That's not asking much? Plus, the red circle ball does not even come with any set made in the past 20 years probably. Why are they using it period? They should have the Aramith Tournament set, which replace the Aramith Super Pro, as the top of the line Aramtih set 5 years ago. That is what's on the TV table.

For that matter, why don't the ref's have ball markers so they can lift the balls out of the rack? We've been using template racks for 10 years. Come on, balls getting stuck on them happen at least a few times per match where you need to carefully mark the ball.

Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. 40 years, and still all over the map, still not professional.

Totally agree with these points. As an FYI, The Aramith Tournaments come with the black logo'd CB; unless you purchase the Value Pack whcih comes with the Measles CB. Odd I think.

I purchased a set of tournaments earlier this year, and the interesting thing is that the logo'd CB is the lightest in the set at 167.1 grams (the object balls range from 168.1 to 169.2 and average 168.7). My few year old Measle is 168.5.

The only reason the TV table has the measles ball is so we people at home can see what theyre doing with the cue ball. Red Dot is better for the fact I dont have all these spots distracting me on my aim line.

CB or OB

In my opinion, the red circle cue ball is a better ball.

Agreed... always liked a red circle ( I have two)... some RC's are slightly smaller than,
say, Centennial balls. Mine are the same size... to me, they're a better ball than the measles, hands down.

Having said that... in a tournament ALL the tables and balls should be as close to the same as possible... going from a RC to measles ball just ain't correct.

Most likely Diamond wanted to send the made in China Cyclop balls with the weird CB and someone at the Open didn't want them, so they had to scramble for new balls. Those TV dotted balls cost about $30 each also.Johnnyt

I really don't think the $30 has anything to do with it. They wouldn't have any trouble selling the balls to spectators for double that.

I've never been a big fan of the measles ball. That being said, they should use the same ball for the entire tournament. The measles ball and the red circle are different. The red circle is much lighter, which has a very easily observable impact on it's behavior.
This is not imagination or opinion, but a physical fact that can be easily observed by anyone who directly compares both.

You can draw back closer to the angle of attack on an angled draw shot with a red circle, for instance. This is not a small difference, a ball in the way of the cuball that cannot be avoided with a measles ball, can be easily avoided with a red circle in some situations, and in other situations this is reversed! While I do feel it's better to err on the light side with cueballs, you should not mix light and regular weight cueballs in the same tournament! I don't know why the pros don't stand up to this sort of lack of professionalism?

I've held several professional events lately that involved Johnny Archer, Rodney Morris, Dennis Orcollo, Roberto Gomez, Skylar Woodward, Justin Bergman, Allison Fisher, Jayson Shaw.

Every one of them wanted to use the measle ball.

did anyone check if its just the ball that comes with those aramiths? castle billiards has those balls and the cueball is not the measle.
but thank god they gave you something to complain about

Red circle cueball does not come with any set of balls made by Aramith/Sulac
It is sold as an aftermarket cueball.
The new Aramith Tournament set of balls comes with a cueball that has a black logo.
The Super Aramith Pro Cup set comes with the measle ball.
Super Aramith Pros come with a red aramith logo cueball.

It's all about consistency.
Every person should be playing on/with the same equipment. PERIOD.
None of this mix and match crap.

...Agreed...

Brand new cue balls...Red Circle or Measle are good.
But if you're in the pool room, let those cue balls get a year old and the flaws show up on
the measle balls....some of those red spots become slightly flat.

In our room, we have some red circles that came with Diamond smart tables.....
....they play better than the Measles

Sorry but your preference is a bit irrelevant here.
And are you trying to prove that the red circle is better than the measle ? Really ?
Why don't you go on and argue with Brady or Rodgers that Wilson balls are worse than Nike balls ?

was Tom Brady in charge of purchasing cueballs? has he moved on from deflate gate to CBgate?

Mike

CB Gate ??? :lol::rotflmao::rotflmao1::lol:

Personal preferences aside; all the tables should have the same cue ball.

( red circle) :p
