You can shoot any ball into any pocket. The breaking player gets ball in hand after a break, even if he doesn't make a ball or scratches. (though if he hits the cue off of the table, then what... that seems like it should be some sort of penalty). Basically, each player gets a fresh chance to run each time. You can use a triangle, or a 7-ball rack, to rack. I guess hands are fastest in my opinion; that part doesn't matter much.

In your variation, the 7 has to be made on a certain side of the table?

I too like 7-ball. And, the rules variations you have are interesting. Though I have two questions:

1. If "Seven ball is really nine ball with only seven balls.", then are you saying that each person can make the 7-ball in any pocket just like 9-ball or do you still chose sides?

2. "... ball in hand no matter what for the breaker after the snap." If the breaker makes something, then BIH? If the breaker doesn't make something, then BIH for his opponent?

Edit:
3. "Balls are racked by hand in a seven-cluster at the foot spot." So, I can't use my special 7-ball rack or use a regular rack to rack 6 balls and then add the extra (or can't use one of the little circular racks). Has to be totally by hand?

The game I like to play best is the game I win. I used to like 9 ball the best because everyone thought one pocket was my best game. It was 9 ball. Now my best game is nine years ago.

i chose one because of the mental rush. the shot selection is endless. the only game where a weaker player still has a chance. in rotation games any good player will run out. in one pocket if i shoot this shot what will i give up if i miss? i would be perfectly happy playing one pocket for the rest of my life. i dont remember the last time i played any other game.

age; 25
location: fort worth, tx
tables: 9' gold crowns
game of choice: one pocket
playing since: 2005

I'd be curious to see what the age ranges were for the different answers for each choice. I'd like to also see what area they live in, too.

The one pocket players are probably playing on big tables and the eight ballers are most likely on bar rags.

1-Pocket
8-Ball
7-Ball
Snooker

37 in Canada, eh. I only play on 9', and 12' tables. I would play on 10' 3C tables, but there are none here.

PS: To whomever wrote it, you can't rack 7-ball with a triangle. It's a 9-ball rack sideways or a hex rack.

Hexagonal Rack
Diamond Rack

Yep. According to the BCA rules and what I've seen on the old time matches on TV if the 7-ball is not made on the break, the non-breaking player chooses which side (3 pockets) they want to make the 7-ball in immediately after the break and the breaker has to make the 7-ball in the other side. This is the primary difference between 7-ball and 9-ball! The 1-6 balls can be made in any pocket.

I'll try your version next time I play with the exception that I can't get behind the person breaking getting BIH and another shot if they don't make anything on the break.

Take a regular triangle rack. Assume the first 4 rows are like a bowling pin rack (numbered 1-10). Rack the 7 balls in the 2,3,4,5,6,8 and 9 positions (you now have a 7-ball rack with the 1 in the 2-position and the 7 in the 5-position). Turn the rack slightly counterclockwise so that the 2-position, 5-position and the 9-position are lined up vertically down the table with the 2-position (i.e., the 1 ball) on the spot. Remove the rack and you're good to go.

Oh I see, that makes much more sense. So if you break and the 7 ends up on a long rail, your opponent will probably want you to make it on the other side of the table, so you'll have to figure out how to pop that ball out during your run. Tricky. I may like this better.

I also suppose the player should be rewarded with making balls on the break ... I agree it doesn't work too well otherwise.

This gives me an idea for a new game...

I play 9 more anything else ,mainly due to the fact that around here, its the main tourney and league game hosted.

Interesting that One Pocket has overtaken 9 ball in the poll. In most other polls on AZ, and there have been many, by the way, I think 9 ball was ahead by a good margin.

I noticed that too -- that is impressive.

Edit -- to provide the background on the "Other" that I also checked...

Locally we play a full rack variation of "golf" on 9' tables that they call "Around the World". I have come to like that game more than I used to over the years because it does often end up with just one ball on the table, with opposing players trying to score in a pocket sequence that rotates around the table (counterclockwise, beginning with the right hand foot pocket and ending with the right hand side pocket as viewed from the kitchen end of the table). They have had a league playing this game for more than 50 years, if you can believe that. The league website is here: http://nhroundy.com/

easy choice - 1P!

golf is my first choice though, but not on a track less than 6000+ yards please ;)

Well, to answer one question, I'm just about 60.

Next, boy as much as I LOVE pool, I wish I could like 9 ball really. But alas, I hate it, despise it, can't even watch it on TV or DVD matches. Can't take it seriously. I don't care to focus or concentrate when I attempt a game in an effort to like it. I don't know why, it isn't rational, but it is what it is. I'd rather watch re-runs of the Honeymooners than a 9 ball match on TV. I don't get it.

One Pocket and 14.1 at a near dead tie for me.

What does this mean?! :rotflmao1::rotflmao1::rotflmao1:

If Baltimore is the "city that breeds," then D.C. must be the "city that needs." :o
I would like to think we lead the nation in teenage pregnancies and gun-related crimes, thank you very much...:)
