i showed this to a guy i know last nite,
he really liked the cue and how it played,
but he said he has to have a bumper on it
i refuse to change it
my thought is , that bumperless cues are for someone that KNOWS it's bumperless and doesnt beat the hell out of it on the floor when they're playing
they should know that they have to use a little more caution
whattayou think?????????

by the way, this cap was bored to accept the coin, leaving a "stop" on the end.
it can't possibly come out ( i think ;))

I don't see the issue. The guy wants a bumper, the cue you showed him doesn't have one - can't have one by design & your choice. No sale, no problem - right?
I prefer a bumper on my cues. I DO NOT abuse my stuff in any way. I have a CA$H cue that was originally bumperless & I paid to have a bumper installed. Lee Peppers suggested we make the PH Titlist he's finishing up for me a true Hoppe butt, and I told him I wanted a bumper. He said "I can't believe you'd be the type to bang your cue on the floor". I told him he could believe with all his heart that I'm not one to do so. I still am having a bumper installed on it. That's what I prefer.
If I ever order, or buy, a cue w/o a bumper & decide I wish to leave it that way, then I'll assume responsibility to act accordingly.
Simple.

that's kind of what i feel
the owner HAS to treat the cue accordingly
we also all know that there's guys out there that can destroy the butt of a cue that has a bumper
i've seen some dandys when i was playing leagues

Absolutely! I know a guy - very strong player - that's had the butt cap on his Bludworth replaced twice. He's finally settled down for the most part.
Another guy - I was playing against in a match. Half way thru, he proceeded to break his cue over about half the furniture in the area. I told his captain I'd give them one chance to settle him down. We wound up finishing the match (he didn't win a game), and after he said he'd just separated from his wife & it had all boiled over. Turned out to be a real nice guy, but his cue got in the middle of some marital strife! Ouch!
I miss too many shots to try & feel better about it at several hundred bucks a pop.

Hey Brent, The buffalo nickel looks cool, but like you said bumperless cues are for those that want them. I owned a "Rambow" style Scruggs made bumperless about 30 years ago. Didn't like having to put the cue on my shoe. Today, I don't like cues without a bumper. The bumper performs a basic function to protect the cue. I also wouldn't argue with any customer of mine over a rubber bumper or no bumper.

i didnt mean we argued over it
he simply asked if i would put a bumper on
and i said no
if he bought it for sure, then i might consider it, but it was more like, add the bumper and then i'll see
sorry for the improper wording in my original post
i hate to cover up the work that was involved in the coin ya know

I prefer a bumper myself. If I had built a cue bumperless and a buyer wanted a bumper I would install one. As much abuse as I see cues go thru at the poolhall I would put bubble wrap over the whole cue if I could get away with it. :D

great idea!!!
i broke my own cue a few years ago
learned a lesson
dont take it out on the cue ;)

Wow I like that dude, there is no way I would put a bumper on that. Hell, I might try to get something like that put into my next cue thats being developed. Would be neat to buy a new quarter or something with my birth year on it.

I know you're a straight up cuemaker who isn't into ragging on your customers...and I didn't mean actually "argue" with hostility. More like, I wouldn't "resist" if a genuine customer wanted a bumper. If he is not a genuine customer, then his input doesn't count for much and no way would I think of putting a bumper on it if I liked it without one! At least the buyer of that cue will never be broke--but sadly you can't get much for 5 cents these days!

the cue is $525
the nickel is "free" ;)

some ppl just prefer bumperless cues because the hit is really a bit different without- this is no advice-so don t quote me^^
a bumper is definitley *safer* so that the accident couldn t happen :)

I saw a mike webb cue once that could be ethier . It had a polished chrome bolt with a slot when bumperless and if you looked closely there were threads in the middle of the slot where you could install a bumper with an allen head screw . Best of both worlds.

I like bumpers on the cues you build, same for SW. However if there is a different design then bumperless looks right, but on the majority of cues I like have bumpers. Its a cue to cue thing for me.
