Ive been playing pool for a number of years now and found myself looking back to my younger years. Im not really old im 24 but been playing for about 10 yrs. Anyway i was remembering when i first started out i liked the 12mm tips very small, because i thought it would help me play better. Thenn i tried the slighty larger ld shafts from ob cues, and yet still no satisfaction. Ive been playing around with alot of diff sizes and havent found what suits me. My vision is also very very poor, so another reason why tiny shafts dont suit me. So ive been playing pool with a friend of mine for about 3 months now, and he shoots with a 14mm shaft. i said no way too big no english right? nope, i get just as much english. Ive found that for me 14mm is the way to go. The only reason people need ld shafts is because the shaft is so tiny. with the 14mm shaft, my cue ball doesnt squirt or deflect nearly as much as the ld shafts. The only real down side ive seen from using it is it takes a more pure stroke to get the right reaction from the cue ball, but hey is that really a bad thing. Like i said my vision is poor, and after switching to 14mm, ive come up about 4 balls. Please feel free or encouraged to tell me what size you prefer and why.

it's odd , because your header (what's your taper?) and the question in your text (what shaft diameter do you prefer?) are two related but totally different questions. I'll go ahead and answer both , though .
11.5mm shaft because it feels right in my hand after years of playing with several different sizes.
15:1 taper because i can let cue follow through more without feeling it push up/expand my closed bridge
My shaft material is on odd choice - 100 yr old black walnut - doesn't deflect hardly @all

I like to play with a 12.75mm tip and a very long taper. Short fat fingers. The tip is larger than the shaft.....SPF=randyg

This is not a "taper" post :smile:
as others have brought to your attention.

What ever works is fine. 14mm is huge tho , I can't imagine shooting with something that size. My jumpers are 14 and my breakers are around 13.75 but I shoot with just under 12.5mm.

Just to respond to the title ;) I use a pretty long-ish taper , around 14"-16" of straight before the taper starts.

my taper and size? good question I have been playing about 35 years and I have to say ....nothing set for me... I like whatever feels right in my hands.

In the same boat

I have most of my cues made now with at least 13.25. Just seems like they have more "spine". I would think it would be tough to find tips for a 14MM - you usually buy tips a little bigger than your ferrulle diameter and cut down to install. Do they sell 15 MM tips?

well, to those of you who noticed my mistake of post title and post question, i do apologize. yes, 14mm shafts are hard to find, usually i have them made, but i love it. It feels right in my hands. To play with a 14mm shaft, you have to be very confident in your stroke. I feel as though i can do the same things as far as english and spin go with a 14mm that others can do with 12mm. Like i said before, theres no cue ball deflection because the shaft is too big and doesnt allow for error, and it takes a really true stroke to be able to use one. not saying my stroke is perfect, by no means. im center ball player. 14mm allows for to use center english with very little effort.
