I might not have made my point clearly in the post 86 with regard to tournaments vs straight up money matches...
Money matches:
Major Pro's
Big money for one quick big bet
Major Con's
Match has to be equalised otherwise it will not take place - unless you are especially lucky getting a mug punter to play your "horse"
Tournaments:
Pro's
Odds for the player shorten as the tournament goes on but the rewards get higher.
The competition remains (usually) whether your "horse" is present or not. Taking SVB again. If we backed him into a 128 man tournament, that tournament will likely go ahead whether he was in it or not. Also, before a ball was hit, he would be favourite. Each and every match he plays - he is favourite.
Overall, as the tournamet progresses, his odds shorten.
No starts, handicaps, etc have to be given in order to play a match. SVB can go into a match against a hacker 8/1 favourite and they still have to play first to 9 off levels. Unlucky on the hacker!
Cons:
Tournaments usually are shorter races so luck, run, form are a bigger factor.
Rewards are smaller and may even take a few months to get through all the rounds of the series.
