When Did Simonis Become The #1 Tournament Choice?

Trying to recall, I do remember the 760 dayzzz.
Also remember a super speed cloth I came across in San Francisco, place called the Bus Stop. 4x8 Valley Coin Op Barbox, big ball and Fast cloth, first time I saw cloth that fast 1970 but it wasn't.... Simonis (they weren't around yet), likely the time period when cloth mfg started using Much better materials. The old rag cloth era was coming to it's end. I'm also thinking Late 70's early 80s. And with the Color of money Movie, the industry got it's financial boost, till it died out 10 yrs from it's start. 20,000,000 Americans play pool, but the movie gave the industry an extra 10,000,000 new players for a bit. Ying/yang of biz.

Around what year was it? I assume it was during the 1980s at some point.

Just curious.

I believe it was the late 1970s, up until then everything was covered with Worsted Cloth. But, no one knows for certain because the factory burned down in the 1980s destroying all records.

Played on a table last week with CPBA cloth and its the fastest cloth I have ever played on.
Which 'model' was it? (not sure if model is the right word for cloth) - I've played on a few different colors and 'models' of theirs. Only one I didn't like was bright pink, pretty sure it burned my retinas reflecting the light lol

The cloth was CPBA Competition, tournament blue. The table was a Xing Jue, never played on one of those before!

The cloth wasn't new either, the table I usually play on has Andy 988 and this was noticeably faster.

(Edit: I misunderstood the question - I answered the Tournament Blue question that apparently wasn’t asked)

Early 2000’s

Greg Sullivan came up with making Tournament Blue the choice for Diamond tables after some discussions with eye specialists on best color for his application, He worked with Pantone to get that correct color. He started that work in the late 1990’s, but it didn’t become the de facto standard until the 2000’s. .

Although Simonis for pool was around in the 1980’s especially 760, it wasn’t the tournament standard. Non-worsted cloths were still very much used.

Part of the story was Greg Sullivan trying to find a slower worsted cloth than 760, so working with Simonis, they developed 860, which became the standard for his tables (PBATE, which became Diamond). So 1990’s is a better answer.

I think you mean 'woolen' as the previous standard. Simonis and its competitors are 'worsted' cloth.

Pretty tough question. My guess as to when Simonis became the pro tournament standard is 1983.
