When do you buy Joint Protectors?

We make kick ass jp's, just ask anybody that has a set for their cue. You can only get them for one of our cues, and even then, the price is not for the faint of heart.

Do you like to get your jp's from the cue-maker, or go the more affordable route of aftermarket?
 
I have a couple of delrin JPs and of the customs I have, Jim Baxter made mine. A little more expensive of course but well worth the cost to have a set of jps that match your favorite cue.
 
Here is a set that Hangemhigh was kind enough to make for my Cash cue and I'm thrilled with the fit and finish of them. They match up at the joint perfectly. After seeing these I think my vote would be from the cue-maker.

I hate to admit it because as the OP points out, going with the cue maker can be very expensive, but everytime I go "aftermarket" to save a few bucks I end up wishing I had had the cue maker make them. Going outside for JPs is in my (new) opinion, penny wise but pound foolish.

If the idea is just to protect the pin then aftermarket JPs work just fine. If the idea is to compliment the cue then from the maker or a dedicated JP maker seems to be the best route.

I have an idea, which I will not reveal here, that hopefully some lifetime will sort of blend the aftermarket aspect and the custom aspect. If any of you yahoos manage to think of this idea before I bring it to market then just know that I will track you down and put joint protectors in your ears! :-)

Years ago there was a guy from Washington I think who sold plastic caps with foam rubber plugs as JPs. These didn't catch on as they looked and felt really cheap and untrustworthy. BUT they were actually not a bad idea - just cheesy.

I buy JP's when Alton will take my order. some cues I have came with them, and I have some of the cheap black ones too.
 
I'm a fan of Alton as well. I am having a custom set made for my Gus right now with Gus' portrait in scrimshaw, the two shaft caps are also going to be scrimmed. A bit pricey in my opinion but will compliment the cue very well. I highly believe they will add value to the cue also. If that set goes right, I will order another.

So, I guess I like to go aftermarket with my jp's.

The Thoroughbred you have, the 2nd. one made btw, came with matching jp's from our shop I believe.

the 4pt cue did, I know that because I was just playing with it 2 hours ago, they are perfect JP'S. Not artistic like Altons work but beatiful perfectly fitted shiny black JP's. Thats a great cue-I have it out for friends to use with a Sugartree and a Deano cue. Its one hell of a cue, everyone likes it.

The maple cue is in the collection, I take it out and use it when I'm alone(I dont take my cues out for very many people) I like to keep my cues for me-its kinda selfish but thats just how it is. Only once in a blue moon do I show my cues to anyone.
 
Tommy made me a set for my Ca$h cue. They are straightforward, yes, but the fit & finish is dead solid perfect. And they are made from the same Brazilian Rosewood as the cue. For the Zinzola I will soon receive, I had Tony send a piece of the cocobolo he used in the forearm to Jim Baxter, and he made a set that turned out nicely. Much less expensive - and it does show in the technical details - but aestetichally well done. Alton makes extraordinary caps.
I don't know that I'm casting a vote, one has to weigh circumstances. Truth seems to be that a lot of cuemakers loathe making caps. But that'll surely be the way to go for perfect fit & a finish that is the same as on the cue.
 
when i make JP's i make them perfectly flush like im maching up a shaft. i hate oversized JP's. they are made to protect the face and flush does its job. u have to me really special to get JP's from me. i hate making them. i think im just gonna get some with my initials on them.
 
When do you buy joint protectors? I suppose you buy them when she says, "Your place, or mine." What do I know.
 
I prefer the cuemaker to make it. The match is always perfectly done. Cuemakers should state it rightaway if a JP is included in the package and also what type of JP will be included.
 
Break cue down, put on jp's, put cue in case, take jp's off, shoot pool. Get done, do it all again. No reason to look at them.....gimmie the cheapies.
