Quit when it's done

You quit when it is done. This is the best answer I can give.

If you need to leave unexpectedly, OK. If you arrange a certain time or set limit, OK.

When the guy stops paying, leave immediately. No air barrells or owesies. I should have another $38,000 right now.

You can quit when ever you want! What are you supposed to do, let them win there money back and then some of yours?

100% agree.........................after all it is called GAMBLING.

I like the approach of spelling it out before you start playing. Play until X time, X number of sets, or quit anytime. Put the expectations up front and you generally have no problems. They can whine all they want, but you can throw it right back at them, and there is rarely a game with money on the line that is not witnessed by others. Let them cry all they want if you follow your agreement. This from a guy who gambles very rarely, but doesn't like the theatrics.

Clearly this is the best approach and I would think because of the disparity in opinions, that every gambler would state the expectations before the first break. It seems that it would be a habit, unless the "lay of the land" is so well established in a particular room that certain things are assumed.

But then, you know what they say about assuming...

I couldnt vote

and I didnt read all the posts after the poll!!!!but,,I was always under the impression that it didnt matter WHEN I quit!!up or down when Im done Im done!!''IF'' they didnt like it thats just too bad too sad<<<<<and this IS one of the reasons I don't/won't do it anymore!!
look at it this way if your in a Tourny and win your set are the directors going to make you play that same set over just because your opponent lost and whined like a child because of it(uh NO)
If they cant afford to lose they shouldnt be doing it and shouldnt cry about it afterwards

I must be reading those percentage charts wrong. Is that the new math RMI just not interpreting it correctly?

There are just two situations where it's OK to quit ahead.

1) on a weekday
2) on a weekend

If your trying to stay in action, if your pool gig is matching up for money when you go out to play and you live in one place where your reputation is all important to getting good action you will follow the unwritten rules. All you have to do is pull a couple nitty hit and runs and the word will spread that you quit while the other guy was still liking the game....pretty simple...your action is dry....if you don't understand this code then your not a player who seriously gambles at this game...you can keep your personal code of 'by god is quit when I want to quit then your not a serious player...like some others have said "stay and get the money".......LOL

I'm OLD school. If there were no stipulations I've never quit winner and it's annoyed me when I got quit loser.

A local double steer mofo trapped me into playing Lefty Goff many moons ago and I found out who he was during our 20 p/game match. Was up at the time (he was stalling) and when he saw I wasn't going to raise the bet he opened up. I still waited till we were even prior to pulling up. Felt it was the thing to do.....

This is how I look at it.

You can quit WHENEVER THE HELL YOU WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a situation come up like this before when I was playing someone @ Q-stick cafe in Holland, MI.

A guy wanted to play some 20$ sets. And from the get go, I told him I really didnt want to play, wasnt in the mood, bla bla bla, but ended up playing anyways. And Neil knows the guy, whom I will only refer to as Paul. Well I win the first set, and notice he is just banging the balls around, kinda half-azz shooting.

Well I win the next set, again, he is doing the same crap. Well after I win the third, I said I was done. Well of course, he blows up, saying I cant win, untill he says so. I was like thats BS, i can quit whenever i feel like it. And said, so am I just suppost to play till, i get back to even or in the hole?

Needless to say, he refused to pay up, And I will never ever play him again. And this may should low, but I also warn certain guys, about playing him and that he should call to post up the money before hand.

Also, this is something to think about too. If you goto a casino, and lay down 10g's playing blackjack and hit 21, do you play till you get back to even or, take your money and run???

Neil,

Thats the only time, someone was pulled some crap, on me about quiting early. After that, I started to FREEZE up the money, so then you play till someone wins it all.

And yes, I know what you mean about him pulling some "stuff"

And the only bad thing, about trying to get him on the table, is he'll probably ask for the "world" in weight to play you. But I've also seen him play Juan, getting the call 7 wild 8, some set's. And I know he doesnt pull any crap against him. But, the last time I seen him gambling, was against some of the local's and he seemed to change his tune a bit, but that was months ago.

But, yea after that, nite I changed my tune when gambling. It's one thing to gamble, but it's another to gamble, with friends.

I think you could easily give, Paul the 7.

I look at "quitting winner" from a few different points of view.

Quitting winner among friends is different. Everyone knows they will play each other again as it is an on going relationship. Outside factors such as work, sleep, family obligations, etc. feed into the equation with friends as to when it is OK to quit playing when you are ahead.

For you players that take the philosophy of "I quit when I want!", get out on the road and try that. Do it enough times and I guaratee you'll wake up in a dumpster, wondering what happened. Over the years, I have seen this happen a few times and it's amazing the change in attitude about the "quitting winner" philosophy a player gets after having their a$$ whipped.

I love the "hit and run" artists. As soon as they get up, they quit. Then, all their action drys up and they can't figure out why they can't get action. Most end up thinking it's because they play too good. LOL.
One thing I have learned over the years is, gossip travels faster than the speed of light in this game. Do a hit and run more than once and everyone in three states will know about it before the money hits your pocket.

What it all gets down to is what kind of relationship you have with the person you're gambling with.

Gambling with friends, most of the rules have been established through time.

If gambling with an unknown or a player that has a history of pulling stuff, set ALL the rules before you start.

SET the time you have to quit or the the NUMBER of sets BEFORE you even step near the table.
POST THE MONEY, no matter how small the amount.

Do these simple rules and it will help minimize the problems later. Not eliminate them, just minimize 'em.

In the world of gambling there are good gamblers, and bad gamblers. One of the things that seperate the the good from the bad is your ability to manage. If it was understood prior to playing that either player can quit after a certain time why would their be a problem? Good gamblers manage themselves for various reasons, they don't allow their opponent to manage them.

Is it ok to quit winners if you are up because the other guy is playing you like a fish and hasn't had the chance to reel you in. If a guy is intentionally laying down to build your confidence and get the stakes high for a score, is it ok to quit winners before the tables are turned??

Isn't the point of gambling is to win? If your trying to let your opponet win his money back, why wager at all? Play for free or the table time. If you win in a casino, would you keep gambling to let the casino get their money back?

There is obviously lots of situations where playing pool for money and quiting a winner may not seem like "the right thing to do", however, the bottom line is to win. You have to care about yourself out there, because nobody else does.
