I know that in the bad old days of tournament pool there were instances when the players never got their money. Can anyone recall specific instances where this happened?

That tournament in Burlington,Iowa back in the mid 70's..If you weren't first in line at the bank on Monday,you were S O L....Freddy the beard had a great line sitting in the hotel waiting for the bank to open..I'll let him tell it..BillPorter said:

Tournaments that didn't pay!
In the late 70's Paulie Jansco had an 8 Ball and 9 ball event in Albuquerque. He only paid 20% of the money.I remember it well because I finished third in both divisions. Steve Cook won a big 9 Ball tournament in Birmingham, AL where the promoter absconded with all the money. It so discouraged Steve that he didn't play in tournaments for some years.
I went to Europe in 1994 for WPA stuff and it took me three years to get my money and I only got it then by threatening to sue. I never even got an apology.
I bypassed one of Gary Pinkowski's events in Binghamton, NY to take an exhibition in Houston and play in the room's medium sized tournament. I did ok in the tournament and the manager was just preparing to pay me cash in the office for my work and my prize money. At the same time one of the players who had money coming also entered the office.
"Go ahead and give him the cash, I said", just wanting to be nice, "You can give me a check'" I continued.
Needless to say later I really felt like a total sucker because naturally, the check was bad. To this day I still haven't got paid.

With all of the condemnation of KT when he first started the tour, one might have thought he had invested all of the tournament money in the Pearl-Qatar development.

There were payment problems in 1996 at the PBT New Orleans tournament and in two or three PBT events after that one. The players were told in New Orleans that they would get their money at the next tourney. Instead, they got double-stiffed. At the trial between the PBT and RJ Reynolds the players were told that any money awarded them by the jury would be paid out to them. Not of it was.

That whole tournament was surrealistic..The opening night was awesome,the promoters had given away FREE TICKETS and that place was buzzin..The next 4 days it was lika dungeon,you could hear a pin drop..KEith was the Man at that tournament..He beat everbody at the hotal gamblin on those tight ass tables..I was with James Cristopher(the sniper) and we lost 9k playin with the 8..Your right about that field,it was impeccable;players from every corner of the U.S.A...I remember being in the lobby Monday morning before we went to Detroit and everybody was sniveling because the checks weren't good..Sigel had somehow either went thru the drive- thru or was 1st in line at the door and cashed his checks(about 4k) and no one else's check would clear..Anyway,you were goin off and said somethin like (I been playin in tournaments for 20 years donating and i finally cash a ticket and i can't get paid!!)..I guess i was tired but it tickled me...freddy the beard said:

Besides the recent occurrences such as the situation between Brady Behrman and other players, including Danny Harriman, I vaguely recall Danny Medina having some issues about not getting paid money about 10 years ago. Something about having a check bounce. Does anybody remember what happened in that situation?
