If you can't quit anytime - DON'T PLAY.

i'm new to the whole pool scene (let along gambling on it) but if you can't quit when you're up... isn't that the point.. to just get some money? So, it would be considered smart to get up and then just quit... I could understand how the other person would want to win their money back.. but they shouldn't have lost it in the first place! i'm not trying to be rude.. i'm just really curious how this system works.. could someone please explain
I'm from IL...but
I will take explinations from the south, north, and NY (yes you are your own place)(and far north too, if they are different)
ManifestEcstacy - I always make it a point (especially in the last two years) to explain that either of us can quit ANYTIME. I also insist on paying & collecting all bets right after the game. NO BUTTONS. If playing for over $50 a game - It Is Posted.
Where I play - Terry (an owner) & I play quite often. We have known each other for over 40 years and have gambled quite a bit in our lives. We have discussed this.
WE POST AND PAY AFTER EACH GAME - KNOW WHY?
TO SHOW ANY SWEATERS & UP AND COMING YOUNG PLAYERS THAT IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.
Just the other day, I start playing a fellow some one pocket for past time ($10 a game). I had "The Nuts".
We had said nothing before playing because I was in such a hurry to get him mounted, I had forgot.
I lost the first game on purpose, reached & paid. He says, "That’s OK, we can just mark it up". I said, "Oh, No - I have lost a lot of money that I shouldn't have by keeping track of the games and I have learned my lesson". I don't trust myself to quit when I should - so - Lets just pay after each game.
I then also explained that I may get a phone call or may get tired - SO - me OR you can quit ANYTIME. He agreed and I could see him counting what he thought he was going to win.
After about 4 hours and two raises he quit $280 looser & he did stiff me $40 for the last game. Who Cares?
The very next day, a fellow who had seen us playing asked me how I did. I told him and he was surprised to hear I got paid. He said this fellow has stiffed many a player at least 4 other poolrooms he knows of and has had two fights over gambling losses.
IF - I had a poolroom - It would be a POSTED rule - That this is to be the way all gambling matches HAVE to be played. If someone came to me complaining about getting stiffed - I'd just laugh in their face.
