Where are all of the sticks going?

Are most players influenced by marketing or what their peers are using? Outside of production cues which seem to be across the world. Where custom cues maybe for the most part are local. Since most have never heard of most cue makers. I live in Baltimore MD so Joss cues are widely seen. I just bought a Lambros and most player never heard of him.

everyone loves mike derouin cues here "kelly cue".....no ones ever heard of him out of here.....and just about every maker whos not balabuska is the same way unless we are talking to ourselves on here.....

99% of league players have no idea of say who Andy GIlbert is.....and he makes a hell of a cue, one of the best. just as an example.

ive also seen guys make beautiful cues that play like straigt donkey........but thats "easy" when you just have money to buy top equipment and have some patience, esp with cnc.

imop its easier to make a pretty cue than to make a player......huh that should start a nice arguement lol

Every Lambros' I've ever played with has hit awesome. As you know have / have had quite a few really really good cue makers from our area. I think you're right to a degree about the regional part but we have had some that are known nationally at least - Scruggs, Frye, Leon, Phillipi , Joss, Boar, probably missing a few more too.

well i disagree as well....with my own comment lol....that was a very broad statement to make...but i think you get the point.

we have all seen the lowly sneaky due to better wood and tapering and such play better, way better than the "closet queen" that someone just vomited inlays allover like 5280 sponsored a MMA cue for affliction clothing lol.

and we've also all seen the very classic beautiful player from a quality maker have us think wtf?

i guess i should say i would much rather have a merry widow that played lgihts out, over anything under the sun that didn't

Everybody knows that the more the cues costs, the better it plays, full splice, short splice, it's all about how much you spend.

All those sticks are going into the closet. I wish I could have every stick that is hidden in a closet that haven't been used in over a year. I would have millions of cues, most would have low miles. The type of cues that end up in closets are ones that are to good to use or ones that are not good enough to use. I'll take them all.

There is some truth to it, at least in my case.
Because I owned a lot of cues, I had to use them all so I wouldn't look bad, and that forced me to practice every day.
On the weekends I would take 8 or so cues to the pool hall to test drive, but in competition I had one cue.
For years I would switch cues when both shafts needed tips.
It also allowed me to experiment with various tips, ferrule material, joint type, and shafts.
The cues helped to keep my nose in the game.

You have over 100 i-trader transactions. You just like cues. I have a few friends like you. Some people collect lenses for their cameras, some collect knives, some collect neckties. For you it's cues. I know a guy with over 40 cues and always has at least one on order. He never sells them. Whatever floats your boat. Just an observation. Some people just like collecting them. Is that where they all went? Peoples closets? :thumbup:
 
I think there are 100,000's hidden away in closets. I'm a small time collector and have 13 cues & 4 on order. I know some people that have 20+ and that's an understatement. Just go to the cue gallery on this site and you will see some very large collections.

In my Thursday night 8 ball league, we have 5 teams, so I'd say about 35-40 players total. 4 of us have custom cues in the whole bunch. Everyone else has very low production cues and mostly 200 or less.

But once more, the people with collections have to be the minority - a drop on the bucket compares to overall. I think what this thread has done is just reinforce what most of us already knew about the secondary market - there are shitloads of cues being sold just not from the used market. Why? Well I think ita a combination of people being into the cue for way too much and not willing to take a loss, having unrealistic expectations, and also the vast supply of new cues same price or cheaper.

Then a lot of people are over Paying!!!

A lot of buyers have been burned on deals and only buy through dealers at inflated prices. They think it is safer!

I have seen sellers that would love to get the prices dealers fetch for the same cue!!!

Some cues are blackballed because the builder fell on hard times. Eddie Wheat!

Some cues are over produced and flooded the market!

I look at plain janes fetching $1500 plus! Meanwhile, a darn near identical cue in the for sale section struggles to get $700

I think fear is at play here! People too scared! Meanwhile, your fighting with the same cue pimps to get a couple looks at your item on page 7!

I don't collect! I do experiment though and have a few great cues that don't work for my game.

But, are great cues! I keep them because it ain't worth the headache selling and I don't need the money!

Rather sell locally and let the buyer kick the tires. But, that makes the cue market very small!

How many pool players are there ?
How big is the market?
How many pros, top level amateurs, good players, beginners, juniors,BCA, APA, ACS, collectors?

There just may be a lot of players out there that all need anywhere between 1 and to many sticks. We may need more cues.
 
The thing that a lot of people don't think of is the scale involved when dealing with Asian countries, especially China. The current population of China is more than 4 times that of the U.S. If 10% of the people in China wanted a pool cue, that would be the equivalent of HALF of the people in the U.S. having a pool cue - and that's just China. With the popularity of pool in the Pacific Rim, it is a cue makers dream market, if you can get a following and a distribution channel.
