Where are all the CF butts?

Why haven't we seen carbon fiber butts proliferate the market? I'm talking about a CF tube with no paint on it, so it will look just like all the CF shafts. Would they be too light? I suppose they could be filled with something like the shafts are to get the weight right? Is there some other reason?

The closest I've seen is one of the Chinese brands I believe has an ugly painted CF tube with wood inside, and it was the old style CF with the cross hatching from the 1990's. I may be remembering wrong on this one.

Poison cues by Predator are CF
Raven have some and so do Rhino
and then there are all the cheap Amazon cues but some might be wooden core wrapped with CF

I'm sure that with time, we'll see more of those as this is the future.

I think that what mostly holds it back is that you can't make fancy designs with inlays and points and charge extra money for it so for now what we see is usually on the cheap side.
eventually, the manufacturers will find a way to show performance superiority and will sell us performance over looks (like Predator did with the P line). and maybe they are waiting for the market to be ready for decals on high end cues... got to admit that Rhino are doing good job at it....

Why would a CF butt "perform better"? It's not like a shaft where the deflection could be reduced by using CF.
 
Yeah I can see the CF butts being easier to specify various parameters across a product line, but custom designing them I'd have to imagine would be expensive.

I played with a Cynergy Truewood for years. I recently switched to the Cynergy X. Hit is largely the same. Maybe the X is slightly stiffer.

The biggest benefit to me of a CF butt is the same as the advantage of a CF shaft over wood, which is its resilience. I've wacked the X butt a few times in a way which would have resulted in a real ding in the Truewood. Over time, the Truewood also accumulated micro-dings of indeterminate origin, just from the general softness of the materials. However, my X is still flawless.
 
None of these look anything like the shafts do.

The cue tech one I’ve seen in person, and the guy had to convince me up and down it was actually carbon fiber which I didn’t believe. The other ones all have a 1990s crosshatching. And they all have a glossy finish on them.
 
I'm actually kinda surprised we haven't as well. When Cuetec released the Cynergy X full carbon cue I really thought that was going to be the start of it but seems like almost nobody is using that or any other full carbon cue. Sure there are some out there, but very very few from what I've seen.

My guess is it's because there is no real performance gain to be had from it and they're still more expensive then a basic wood cue butt, at least in most cases. With a shaft there are real performance benefits you can point to and measure. I don't believe the same is true with a butt. They have some non-performance benefits such as radial consistency but that isn't much of a problem these days with a well made cored cue anyway.

An empty hollow tube would be too light and likely feel terrible but I'm sure there are various types of fill that could be used to tune the weight, sound and feel to get one that plays good.

I'm definitely curious to see if we see these become more common over time or not...I thought we already would have so I was wrong there.

But I also don't really want one myself and so maybe other people are like me. I've gone to a carbon shaft because I like the benefits it provides but I also appreciate good cue making, traditional woods, etc. So I like having a wood butt from a smaller local shop (Jacoby....they're not that small but they're smaller than say Cuetec or Predator) paired with a modern carbon shaft, kinda feels like the best of both worlds.
