At a modern old school Pool hall with 50-60 tables, top quality lighting- food and liq. or will pool players still come to a Bar and Grill style place -sports bar setting that has tables? Where people are dining and drinking. I personally prefer a Pool hall atmosphere where the interest is Pool - and don't you have to use the word( Billiards ) in your name- instead of ( Bar and grill) to help people find your business? thanks in advance for all comments- Mark

i'm like you. i prefer to play in businesses where the main interest is billiards.

i've played at sports bar type places and always feel out of place carrying my case in

I am most comfortable in a middle of the road true pool room. Not upscale or a dump just in the middle.

I like good tables, good players, & plenty of action. I don't mind if its a dump, but I prefer a nice place.

Pool hall for me, with good equipment. But for good equipment I'll play in a sports bar over a dumpy pool hall with crappy tables. But I have always preferred a pool hall. Alcohol is not even a requirement.

around here I prefer the clubs. There are several that cater to pool players and have excellent 9' tables.

No booze, no eats, no juke...just oldies playing on the radio at low volume.

Low prices to play on classic Brunswicks...or 3 cushion & snooker if you prefer. Most afternoons a low stakes golf game going on the snooker table.

I guess I am a "dive" kind of guy. You find some of the best players there, people you wouldn't expect to be able to play. I used to play with a fella named Marshall, an old guy with big white hair like Doc from "Back to the Future". He owned a European motorcycle repair shop down the road. One of the best shooters I have met in quite a while. In this type of place, the tables are often of inferior quality with bad cues, but everyone uses them, so I will too. Its all fun.

The Crooked Cue is my favorite. Anything that's fairly busy without being overcrowded, and the focus is on the whole experience (great food, drinks, tables, equipment and service) and not just one area is somewhere I'd enjoy playing.

I like to play in rooms where the people in the room appreciate the game and respect the players that are out in the arena playing.

The music is loud enough to block out the chatter and pleasant to the ears.

These rooms used to be common place in the old days. Today, they are hard to find.

I prefer the former, but compared to the latter its not a sustainable business model in today's economy.

Moving on to the next question, how much more of a premium would you pay to patronize an old style pool hall, versus the sports bar with 7' tables?

300%, literally. Have done it, continue to do it, always will. If you add drinks & something more than pub-food into it, you can double that.

Hi there,

i prefer to play in private club rooms. The club-room i used to play has 6 9ft brunswick tables and noone except serious pool-players are around there. . Far more i like to play with somebody on his hometable, if it s a good table-
Sometimes you need to go into a great old-school pool-hall of course :) Then old feelings comin through again :p
But at least it s also about money- hard to afford playin in a pool-hall each day for hours. In the club i pay a small amount for a month membership, have a key for the room-and the drinks are low-priced. So it s affordable for everyone.

mark I agree with you, its a shame the twin cities do not have a nice old style pool room.

sports bars are cool if done correctly, put the pool tables in a separate area. But overall any pool hall that has burgers is the best. NO FOOD NO LONG SETS!!!
