I was just reading an old billiards digest 2001/2002 and was reading his article about the shakes and what not. I was wondering what happened to him too....What a talented player he was/is

I thought he quit altogether after the Mosconi cup.
He had the most beautiful stroke I saw before he developed the shakes.

I played with him and Shannon Daulton in a golf match against some guys in 2002 and I shot a game of pool with him. His shake was horrible then and I've heard he has had to quit pool altogether. His condition is called Focal Task Tremors and some people spent big money at Duke University and surrounding areas to try and find a cure for Mike. He is a really nice guy. The funny thing is that when playing golf Mike does not shake at all.
I heard a few years ago that he was giving up the game due to the severity of the shake as well. Too bad as Scott Smith used to love to blow that train whistle during his intros at the tournaments.
Does anyone know if the shake that Stevie Moore has is the same condition, just not as severe, or something completely different?

The last time I saw him was when he won the Masters tournament at Q-Masters against Keith McReady. After he beat Keith, Keith gave him the 8 ball and I think they played 11 ahead for like 2000 or something. Keith ended up winning. I noticed a while back that Mike sold his Lambros on Ebay. He played great in that tournament but I swear it was hard to watch him play shaking the way he was.

Was lucky enough to see him at the Bicycle Club in 93 or 94. He had everyone talking. When I called the club one day to see about the matches all the guy o the phone could talk about was how good the young kid was still playing. He was something to see and what happened to him is a damn shame!

True indeed. It's very likely that Coltrain could be the top player in the world right now, top 5 or 10 easily...
Too bad the Raleigh area I live in now is nothing compared to what is was when Archer and Coltrain were here...
Just saw this thread. I live in Raleigh. Mike and his dad and myself made several roadtrips in the early 90's. He was my "little cousin." Man, he was smooth. Watch Johnny. It's identical. Same build, same break, same stroke. It was just a shame that the tremors hit. We really made some cash together. Quick story.
We were at WK Sports bar in Alcoa, TN. I had been in there the previous week and the place was action packed. So... I drop Roger (his dad) and Mike off at the door. I didn't want them to see them with me. Here are the rules I told him. 1. No giving up weight. 2. No bets less than $50 a game. (This guy would stake a whole bar if he liked gambling with you.) 3. You are not Mike Coltrain. 4. Roger, no talk of tournaments.
I walk in about an hour later. Mike is giving up the seven for $20 a game, while his dad is sitting beside the owner talking about him winning the junior nationals. WTF? It's ok though. Within sight of me, we raised the bet to $100 a game, and the guy called his banker, who brought him $2000 cash at 9:00 pm. I think Mike ended up with about $2200? total. Barboxes, gotta love'm.
