Where to play in LA

I have a couple of other stories that made me say what I did. But, we need to let this one go.

The true fact remains that HOB is a very fine room with great and friendly players.

I am willing to let this go.

And I agree on all counts -- it's a nice room with nice people.

You are not very good at extrapolation are you? I've often been there several days within a week, during a single visit.

And if you're going to argue with me I'd appreciate it if you'd read what I write more carefully. On several visits I've asked the house man if there was anyone that might be willing to play some cheap 1pocket. A couple of those times the guy behind the counter has said, "No, there's not. But I can call someone if you'd like." And I've said, "Wayne or Richie?" and he's said something back like, "Oh, so you know those guys."

I never said they called you or anyone else. What I said was "they always want to make a call..."

Lou Figueroa

I have no need to argue with you Lou. I know your type. I avoid cheap shot artists and don't engage in arguments with this type of person because they always find a way to twist things to suit their purposes. I've never liked knockers. I don't like people who try to belittle others. I do like honest people. Wayne

And I know your type too, Wayne. I got plenty of intel on you from other guys in LA. But rather than go into all that, I'll just let it go.

I think HOB is a top 5 room in the country. Also, as an out of town visitor I've had no problem making games with regulars.

I haven't followed this thread real closely but from what I understand, getting a game at HOB in Santa Monica is not easy.

First off, I have a hard time believing that. I play there once in a while and usually take one of the back tables. The regulars have seen me there before, and they know I'm a player too. No one has ever come to my table and asked for action. This isn't because they're trying to dodge me. Of course, I could walk out of there then claim the players were all there and no one stepped up to play me.

Instead, I'm ususally there to kill some time while rush-hour traffic dies down and not really looking for a game. If I had time to match up I know I can get a game by asking the house guy or any of the regulars. In fact there would be players all over me like horny monkeys.

Also, I don't know Wayne real good but from what I can tell, he's a standup guy who enjoys playing the game.

Lou, I'm sorry to hear you didn't get played at HOB. You probably weren't familiar with how the boys operate in there. Give it another try and let someone know you'd like a game. You're also welcome to contact me (PM would be fine) and we'll either play or find you a fair game. It would be pleasure to meet another AZ'er.

Well, not to do a total rehash, but I've been in rooms all over the country and have always managed to get a pick up game.

Next time I'm headed that way, 8ball, I'll let you know. Thanks for the offer.

Jim that's a nice compliment.
You should know Danny Shades only complimented your play. All I heard from him was and I quote. "That pilot guy shoots good. Hes a good player". Ian the other guy that gave you a game heads up said "Great shotmaker. He beat me". So youre right. "fine room with great and friendly players". At best they were praising your game and you should have taken it as such. At worse they were remarking on the disappointment of their play.

Hope you keep that in mind.

I've often heard pool ettiquette is different here in California. But, I haven't been to as many rooms as you have. The only pool rooms I've played outside of CA have been in Nevada and Arizona. They seem to operate the same way as here. Known players can walk in and out of a "players" room and nothing happens. Unless the intention to match up is said, the room will stay silent. It may well be a regional thing.

I grew up in San Francisco. Used to play at The Palacade, Town & Country, Van's, Geary Billiards, The Palace, and Cochran's. After I moved away, a few years later I lived in Sacramento for two years and played at The Jointed Cue and Gene Aloha's place. In recent years I've also had the chance to play at Hard Times in Bellflower.

I've also played at Best Billiards, the Cue Club, the Sharks, and a couple of other rooms in Vegas. Kolby's and BullShooters in Arizona. Got cheap action everywhere.

Jim's is a great guy and fair action. I think he and I have played a couple of times when he's come to St. Louis.

Well there goes my theory!

I'm familiar with all those rooms, except for the older ones in SF. As a stranger in the room. there were only a few times I was asked for a money game. Most times, I had to make a game with a regular to get something going.

It was a lot different many years ago. Action players were always on the hunt for fresh meat to walk through the door. There were times a guy would get 2 feet inside the room and offers for money games would be everywhere. I don't see very often anymore.

And I don't know where you came up with the number of 10-15 years. More like five since my Mom moved down there. And there are a few of us saying it's tough to get played there: Lou Figueroa

Extrapolation: your first posts said you had been there "3 or 4 times in the last few years" "several visits". Then it became 20 visits stated over and over. So if you had been there 3 or 4 times every few years it would mean you had been going in 10-15 years to get up to 20 visits. Of course you could have just been exaggerating to make your point of knocking the room.
None of the regulars have seen you in there more than twice.

Also your examples with jtompilot and Fatboy don't wash. Jtompilot has gotten played and will get more games and he did apologize in an earlier thread. Fatboy could get into action anytime he enters the room, the difference is he wants real action not a recreational game like you. When he says it is hard to get a game he means for multi hundreds or thousands. He could get $10-40 games every day of the week and he could put his cue together as he walked in because he would be playing immediately but $10-40doesn't interest him.

No one has ever called me or Rich to play you and the only time Rich or I ever get calls is when some pro or top level player has entered the room and is looking for action. I have never gotten a call to play a player below my level except when some poolplaying poker players are looking for some good sized action. I have never gotten a call to play anyone from out of town for $10 to $40.

Wayne

Hi Wayne,

yes your 100% right about me. I dont want social pool in that room. I play Cotton in Vegas social. I like real action. There are good guys in there-it was a little "cold" the first few times I went in there. Now its all good. I just dont understand why people don't put $$$ in action there, especially the guys who have it. Not everyone in there is on the shorts. I'm not looking to hi-roll the joint. But my time is worth more to me than $30 pool.

hope to se you soon,

fatboy:):)

what years did you play in Gene's room in Sac?

I wont play shades anymore, not the way it stands now. I'm down 3 games(well4) I dot count one cause i wassick and played 1 game and left had a cold fora week. I'm down 3 games at $200/game the past few weeks. over 4 sessions. We played last session with cyclop balls and broke even we got to $300/game. Then he would bet $400-i hurt too much to play so i pulled up even on the day.

I came back next day with lots more $$ ready to bet $400 or 500/game. he wanted to play with the old used balls, i walked out when he was in he bathroom

here is how its went past 2 weeks:
i lost 1 game first sssion, 2 games 2nd session and 1(when i was sick) whih house balls, then i break even with cyclop balls-i had no experience with them, i offered to leave them there for him to play with. He refused to play with them. so he can have his 4 games(3 legit) and he loses me.

Wayne find me someone else to play there please, i give up on Shades, EVERY thing has to be his way, (except the CB) otherwise its his way or he wont play, i want to play him for more than $300/rack. infact i'd take a hair less spot for $500 and lots less weight for $1000/rack. How do you like that???,

i will take less weight the more we bet. I'll play him even for $2500/rack with cyclop balls. I'm not high rolling the joint, i'll just take less weight the more we bet, thats stupid-but i like my chances....I wouldnt make this move playing Dip or Harry. But Shades I will.

let me know

Good comeback Lou.
Nice to know you are out there getting plenty of intel on me from other guys in LA. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. LOL

Hi Fatboy: I know you are good action and just want a fair game. I have never made games for other people and I don't bet on other peoples games or go in with them. Sorry. If I hear of anything that might interest you I will be sure to let you know. You are good for pool and I hope your body somehow gets better to the point you can enjoy everything a lot more for longer periods of time. See you soon. Wayne

It's interesting Lou. I didn't think you really said anything bad or wrong. However you seem to have a knack for getting people to not like you. If it were a positive thing, that would be one hell of a talent you got there.

thanks Wayne, always good to see you at the pool room. I respect you lots. Your right I hope my health gets better so I can play more, I just want fair action, im not looking to rob anyone or get robbed. I like to play for $$$ that counts and makes it worth while-if its worth doing its worth doing for $$. I'm not trying to be a show off or hi-roll anyone. $40 pool is just boring after a hour. I have problems beyond my back now :(, see you this week.

When I'm in town I go to Santa Monica Billiards or Plush Pocket in the Valley.

Except for the champions, everyone is scared to death to play anyone they don't know or they want so much weight you have no chance. I just spent most of the day at S.M.Billards and no one would play me. I play close to Danny's speed. He beat me once, the second time I won, the third time I was up a game he quit me. He wasn't stealing so he quit.

Doesn't anyone just was good even action?

Rant over.......

Try looking on the bright side. People are wising up, harder to hustle. That's a good thing for society in general. But you don't care. All you care about is what you get out of it. Am I right?

Come on man, it's time for the people to learn how to avoid being hustled. Once we achieve that end we will be on our way to a better world and will have you to thak for being a part of it. Come, join us in our quest to enlighten the people of planet earth.

No will play you. That's good. We need more thinkers on earth, not more suckers. You care only about the suckers because you care only about yourself in the here and now, with tomorrow having no meaning at all. Come on man, get wise. You, me, everyone, let's make this world a better place.

Peace, love, and all the rest of that stuff,

TJ
