Where to play in LA

Thanks Jim I believe I remember you and I liked your game. I know someone may have overrated your game which may have caused some problems. I am glad your experience with Lou led you to believe he is a stand up honest guy.

Just out of curiosity do you think he was being honest with his quote "Everyone in Los Angeles knows Wayne is a lock artist. Don't play him" and the fact he got this from numerous sources but has not been able to identify a single one or give a single example of where I tried to get a lock.

You know what this can do when someone gives you the reputation of trying to get an unfair game, do you think that was Lou's intent when he made up this lie?

Is it ok to be a knocker and tell lies like he did? Am I wrong to be offended by his lies?

Wayne

(ahem) Well, the thing is that I did not say that was my opinion but the opinion of a couple of guys in LA. Are you suggesting that no one in the greater Los Angeles area is entitled to their *opinion?*

BTW, speaking of "intent" what was your "intent", Wayne, mentioning Jimbo's and providing links to Spider's moronic videos?

I would like to clear up a few points.

1. I was the one that said everyone was scared to death. This was an Exaggeration and only half true. But It has its bases of truth.

2. HOB is one of the finest rooms in the country and I understand everyone defending the room.

3. I have played Lou several times and he is a stand up, honest guy and a Gentlemen to play. Sure he has his Opinions as we all do. Practicing on the back table must me some form ducking.

4. Wayne, next time I'm in town I'll let you know ahead of time. You were in action one of the times I was there.

Jim

As to point no1. Yes you said it but another backed your statement up with aspersions like our people having expensive sticks but not willing to play. Then setting forth with personal attacks. Now tell me what does that imply? Youre a decent man. What do you deduce from that.

All rooms have all kinds of people. Yes there are some who fear others. There are those who pretend fear. There are those that are not afraid of you but afraid of what they might do in a tense situation. We have nits, bullies, braggarts, a holes, etc like any other room. But you don't attack the room or one of the most decent people in it. Thoses are not "bases of truth". And I promise you this there are those of us who will protect any visitor or defend you against these miscreants.

As far as Lou goes your description is admirable. But he hasn't acted that way here. Had he said plainly. I have a problem. Every time I visit HOB. I cant get a game. Is it me? Do I look like a great road player? Or are they just afraid to play strangers? Can someone help?

We would have rolled out the red carpet for him. I personally would have taken a personal call from him and set him up with some decent $10 to $40 pick up games. And be happy to. But he went about it the wrong way and got wronger. You know it. I know it and everyone else does.

Its not about just defending the room. But defending integrity. You think the east coast would let me get away with it if I said Tony Robles was a nit and a lock artist? You know how ridiculous that sounds?

"No, no guys it wasn't me it was my intel anony sources. Besides I said ROCK artist. Not Lock artist. ROCK artist.!!! Doesn't good ole Tony play the drums for chissakes???"'

Let me add one side note. Ducking is not bad. We've all quacked now and then. What is bad is not being honest and lying about the room and its players when you ducked and calling everyone else a duck artist when you know in your heart you are the one, Billy Jean.

All in all. You seem like a decent chap. I hope you comeback. You said you had a "rant". Everyone is allowed it from time to time. We don't take that too seriously. That's over and done. But we don't take attacks on our integrity.

You need to work on your use of quotes.

You have me saying a number of things in this post (and others) I have not said.

So?

Went 20 times... some guys had some nice sticks... didn't get a game.

So, what's your beef with that?

What else you got?! Please tell me that's not it.

So, Lou says that nobody play-ee.

HOB peeps say dey play em all, mon.

Am I missing another of pool's unwritten rules where if you go into a room, that you must be asked by the patrons or that the new face needs to ask? The best way to not find out is to not ask anybody.

Come up to Portland, we've got beer and I'll play for a Hamilton! If I can win, I'll up it to a Jackson. I'm starting to like this game. I can run 4 or 5 and it actually means something. :o

Seriously, though.. what's the standard procedure?

Answer to your question. You act like a gentleman. And thankfully you seem to be one.
When Im in Portland lets have a brewski. Vice versa if youre in our neck of the woods.
Cheers!

I don't know what the pertinent unwritten rule would be, Banks.

Variously, on different visits to SM, I have tried: waiting to be asked, asked guys to play, asked the houseman if there was anyone around to play, asked the houseman to send anyone over who would like to play, and... have not gotten a game.

I was up in Portland a few years ago on a drive down the West Coast to SF, but didn't have time for pool. Visited the Chinese garden though :-)

"In several visits I have never seen Wayne there"

As I've said *several times*: I honestly do not recall him being there. If he was there, he may have been playing someone. Out of hundreds of guys I've played over the years, I played him one time. Sorry, my memory is not what it used to be.

Is that it?

Gentleman? I don't know if I'd go that far.

I used to live in the South Bay, but barely knew one end of the cue from the other back then. I visit the desert every once in a while, but don't usually have much free time. Really want to spend a week or so down there next year. If so, I'll definitely hit up HOB and Hard Times. I'm sure it would be a humbling experience getting my butt handed to me by the "weaker" players there. :o

Dang, Lou, you've got some bad luck. I know what you mean about not having time. Seems each time I scrounge up the change for a vacation with the g/f, we're so busy trying to make the most of it that I'd feel bad if I tried to sneak off for "a few games".. because we all know it doesn't end at a few.

I'm starting to figure out that if you run out, 1p gets a lot less stressful. Forget Power 1P, I play Prayer 1P. (Please don't miss, please don't miss, please don't miss..)

I guess I have had bad luck.

1pocket is a funny game. And the more I play it -- particularly when I'm a sacrificial lamb playing guys like Nevel, JJ, Gentile, Darren, Jose, Alex, or a few other guys I've drawn lately -- the more I see that you can win a lot of games of 1pocket with little silly shots that you'd never think to practice. Yes, running out and/or not missing is important too, but there are some subtle shots that are equally critical at the right moment.

That's sort of what I was thinking last night. I tend to think outside the box, more along my 8b style. With a little more practice, maybe even a schmuck like me could step up to sacrificial lamb.

LOL! Come on down. I can assure you, you will have a good time. And getting a game is easy. No there are no set rules and in each room rules are different.
But there is ethics and etiquette. If youre an adult you understand this. If youre a stranger you find out what the expected behavior is. You don't start knocking the place down because your ethics and etiquette is not in tune. Horse sense.

Yes, and I corrected that a little later saying I should have said "donated" to pros (though some would still consider that gambling.)

And really? Are these the most serious charges you can come up with, lol.

Woo wee.

Now, Wayne, you need to stop lying about that:

Lou Figueroa

Yes I said you are still lying which you were. I didn't say you were lying about everything somehow you extrapolated that for your own convenience. I have been very specific about what you have lied about. I am still waiting for you to give one example (you don't need to give your imaginary friends names) just one example where I tried to get a lock game. Ask all of your imaginary friends and see if they can come up with one.
